Has anyone done a 1/2 marathon using Jeff Galloways program?
If so what was your personal best using it?
I am doing the 10mile TOT run, but was just curious if it would take me longer to run/walk it rather then just running.....actually I was thinking of trying to follow his program for a NON-disney run that I am also doing this year.

any info would be greatly appreciated thank you

I've used some form of run/walk for 4 of my 5 half marathon. My first 2 I used John Bingham's and Jenny Hadifield's "Marathoning for Mortals" plan. The first time the walking plan, then the walk/run plan. For my last 2 half marathon's I've been using Jeff Galloway's plans. The one in the middle was a bit of a hybrid between the 2 plans.

Since you asked, my current PR is 2:51:02 in ideal weather, and this spring I did a 2:52:45 in warm (not hot) and sticky weather. I should also mention that I'm a nearly 300lb man. So I'm not a light weight.

To your question on if you'll be faster using Galloway, it's not a simple question to answer. What I can say is with the right ratio, run/walk is easier than either running the entire way for walking the entire way. For me, right now, I'm faster run/walk than I am straight running. In a half marathon, I can't run the entire thing but I can complete it using walk breaks. I have built up to being able to doing a 5K running straight. Straight running my 5K pr is 36:29. With walk breaks it's 33:59.

For someone who can easily run the entire distance, I'm not sure if run/walk will help or not. I would say try it out on a few of your mid week runs and maybe a long run or 2 to try it out and see if you like it or not.

Awesome, thank you so much for your reply!!!

I was pretty much in the upper 2's when using Galloway exclusively. ALso, around 6 hours in the full. PR's fell significantly once I learned where the Galloway weekends were. About an hour in the half and over 90 minutes in the full.

The great news is that if you are religiously following the weekend runs, you will make it with little issue.

Do you mean once you incorporated the weekly long runs?

I've been training with a Galloway group for the last couple of years. With any program everyone's personal best will be based on a number of individualized factors so that is not a good indicator of effectiveness of the program. The key is to find a consistent training plan that works for you. Galloway's plan is great for minimizing stress on the body so that you stay injury free, and the three days of running per week are manageable for most people, so that is what makes it attractive to so many.

As for whether you'd be faster just running, it is certainly possible if you are conditioned for the distance. Walk breaks make the distance easier for some who have trouble running that far without a break. Some people use the Galloway plan for training then don't use walk breaks at all on race day. I heard Jeff recommend to someone in my group that if they felt good on race day and wanted to go all out they should still start with walk breaks at the same interval they used in training and then at the halfway point increase the run interval or eliminate them entirely if they still felt strong. Some in my group train at longer run intervals on weekday runs so then in a race situation their body is used to different intervals if they want to switch it up.

The key I think is to pick a training plan and stick with it so you're prepared for race day. Then you know you have a great chance of meeting your goals. Good luck!

terrific advice thank you very much!!!!

I (relatively) recently signed up for Galloway ecoaching. I'm a HUGE fan of Galloway training. One of the things I've realized with the ecoaching is that I have to "suspend disbelief" sometimes and just do what he tells me. My training is going really, really well and I have no injuries. I'm using the ecoaching to train for my first Goofy but I'm also running the ToT race. I'm not a fast runner (fastest half was 2:36 and my full was just under 6 hours) but I'm feeling stronger and better than ever right now!

:thumbsup2 thank you!!!

I think you can run faster with walk breaks than straight through. My half PR is 1:53 and next time I go for a PR I will use more walk breaks. It allows you to run faster during the running part and stay fresh longer.

If you buy Jeff's book he has training plans especially for people who are aiming for a specific time, and has advice on how much improvement is reasonable.
