Heading down next week to DL and this is a must activity for DS and DD. Trying to figure out how quickly the sign up is filling up and weighing that against some early morning rides. Anyone have any experience recently with the Jedi training sign in and how quickly it fills up?

I would definitely sign up as soon as you can. Two weeks ago, all times were filled by noon, and it was a 9am opening. It was during Star Wars race weekend, so not sure if it was extra popular.

Where does one sign up for that? That's not something that only Disney Visa holder can do is it?

No, any child between 4-12 can sign up. But they are randomly picked.
From the website:
  • When selecting new students, the Jedi instructor looks for energetic and enthusiastic younglings eager to learn. Jump up and down with excitement!
  • Get the Jedi instructor to see you. Those in the front of the audience are very visible, but if you find yourself a bit further back, consider standing out with some sort of Star Wars-themed sign.
  • Dress the part. What would a young Jedi-in-training wear on the first day of school?

You do not have to be a Disney Visa Card holder for the Jedi Training Academy...only the Disney Visa M&G in Star Wars Launch Bay. The only requirement is that the participant is between the ages of 4 - 12.
The sign ups are located at the Star Wars Launch Bay entrance...go through the entrance, and when the queue turns to the right, the Jedi Training Academy sign ups are to the left. There are signs posted.

Things have changed with the Jedi training. Everybody needs to sign up now, and that's done near the entrance to Autopia (and Superhero HQ). Get there early (depending on the day of the week), and you will see a board with a list of times for the show for the day. You line up, and then when you get to the cast member, they will take down your details and you can select the time you want if it is available. You then come back to the area about 15 minutes before the start of the show, the kids put on their robes and get photographed by the Disney photog. They are then taken to the stage, and the parents / guardians are allowed to the front to view the show. No more mess of having kids jump up and down and be disappointed when they are not picked.
Your kids will love it! We went on an average weekday in January, got there at about 11am, and got in to the show at around 12:30 (can't remember the exact time).

They no longer randomly pick (looks like they have outdated info on their website). That is how they used to do it. We have been twice since Season of the Force has been going on, and the process is definitely different.
You sign up for the time you want. They do not have you sign up for a time, and then pick younglings from that group to participate, while the others are left to sit it out.

So basically what I am hearing here is that I could probably do a few rides first and then sign up. Is that the long and short of it all?

I keep asking this question as well and have yet to receive a definitive answer, but yes many have gone 1 hour after opening and slots are available is what I've heard. I am thinking it's not like at WDW. :)

We are going the first week in March so hope this is the case. We'll do this our first day just in case...do rope drop, ride important stuff, then head for signups. If it's gone no big deal and we know for the next days. OR if you try it maybe you could let me know what you find out. :)

Casey from DLR Prep School just did the Jedi Training with her two kids yesterday and reported that cast members were saying that registration fills up about one hour after park opening. Her suggestion was to head directly to the sign up area at park opening if you want to ensure a spot for your kiddo. If this is a must do for your kids, I don't think I'd hit up any rides before getting them signed up.

Do your kids have to be present to sign up? Am hoping to power walk over myself.

Wow, thanks for the update. My son has one more year before he's "too old." ;)

All kids must be present. And they ask the kids if they want to do it.

We were happy to go there first and get it done with. We had our choice of all time slots, so we could pick the perfect one for our day.

If you know that this is a must, make the signup a priority. And it took almost NO time.

Reports I read suggested if you went right at rope drop the line was shorter than if you waited an hour or so. So you could go right at rope drop and be one of the first families then still get to the rides quickly.

We did Jedi Training Academy yesterday. We rushed directly there at rope drop. We were only about 5 people back for the sign up and my son got in the first show. The show lasted about 25 minutes.

It was awesome, btw! We wanted to get him in before he was too old. We'd never done it before because we were always with a group of 3 to 5 kids and we didn't want any crushed feelings if they didn't get picked. It was nice to be able to sign up.

When we came back to "check in" for the show (our return time for my son was 11:05, the park opened at 10) the line to sign up was reaaalllly long. If this is important to you I think it's nice to get there early to sign up before the line is long and get the first show done. We pulled fast passes for Hyperspace Mountain while we were there and we road Buzz Lightyear while we waited. It was perfect!! Also, if you have a PhotoPass they will take your kids pictures during the show. The pics look really nice.

Yes, pictures are cute. June 2014, so they still had borders available with Photo Pass +.
