My DS is just getting into Star Wars and so the Jedi Night would be pretty neat for him. However, from what I'm reading, you have to go there first thing at rope drop to sign up. Is this true? And if we didn't make it for rope drop, is there any point in trying? We are not interested in standing in line for hours.

It depends you can shoot by sounds dangerous and the sign outside tells if they have slots left.

Sometimes slots are available till 10-11 sometimes they are gone by 9:20. It's not hours of waiting.

If you don't get there in the morning before all slots are filled, there will not be any "standing in line for hours."

Once the slots for the day are taken, there is no waiting in standby line for Jedi Training.

Like so many things at WDW, arriving far too early beats arriving just one minute too late.

If you're not there within an hour of rope drop you probably won't be getting a slot for any Jedi training. And you likely need to be there sooner than that. Once the slots are gone, they are gone. There's no line to stand in except the line to sign up.

We got there late and stopped by just to check. They said that we could be standby at another show in case one of the people who signed up didn't show up for the show. I didn't do it because I have 3 kids and figured that the chances of 3 not showing up for a future show were nil.

We took our DGS last June (VERY busy time!) Got there before RD and raced across the park to sign up....two hours later there were still slots available! We felt kind of silly for rushing...

I'd say that's pretty rare. We've seen very disappointed kids turned away by 10:00, and the latest that we've seen slots still available is 10:30. And this is in October when the crowds are lighter than in June. Plus, if you sign up early you have your choice of shows. Two hours post RD, even if slots are available in certain shows, it likely wouldn't be at an ideal time.

Disney also tries to match slots to demand. Busier times of the year like SWW, they have many many more shows with more instructors (for SWW they often have a double capacity show kids on the stage and kids in front on the ground.) slower times of the year they have fewer shows.

So it could be they either over estimated the demand one day or under estimated it.

What time do the slots/shows usually happen? DS5 wants to do it but we have a lunch & dinner ADR not to mention having to schedule in FP+ rides around it... We have a 8:05 breakfast ADR at H&V so I'm sure can be one of the first in line to make it there.

Shows run virtually all day long.

The following is the JTA show schedule for THIS WEEK, but it can vary.

From www.wdwent.com

9:20, 10:10 & 11:50am, 12:40, 1:20, 1:50, 2:20, 3:40, 4:10, 4:40, 5:30, 6:20, 7:10 & 8:00pm

Thank you all. So doesn't sound likely that we'll get a spot if we don't arrive by rope drop (and with late night at Wishes the night before, don't think we'll make it), but doesn't hurt to walk there and check. Actually, it's nice that you don't have to just stand in line.

So, if you get there in time, do they basically give you a time and you come back for then?

We were there last year and went to HS the Saturday before July 4. DS5 said he wanted to do Jedi training, so we were planning on heading right there (didn't quite make it to rope drop but pretty close to opening). Then as we approached the park he changed his mind, so we didn't even go there. Instead we went to TSM and did other things, then as we headed over to Star Tours around 11, he said he wanted to do it (actually sisters bribed him with promise of a Lego Star Wars toy when he was done), so we went in to see if they still had openings. We got a time slot around 4:00pm. Watching him fight Darth Vader was the most memorable part of our trip!

Our experience FWIW
We went the end of May and stopped by (knowing that if there weren't any spots left we would be ok) around 10 o'clock and there were still spots left for the last 2 shows... we actually wanted the last show at 8pm as we were leaving in the afternoon and returning. So it worked out for us...

Also I should mention that there ended up being 3 spots left for that last show that ended up going to walk ups b/c of no shows..

If your child is ok with not being able to do it, and you are able to do those later pm shows, I think you have a good chance still not showing up right at RD. YMMV

This is good to know. We have dinner ADR at 5:15pm followed by Fantasimic at 7:30pm and then park closes, so guess we'd have to book by 4:45pm or so. And I can see us arriving 9:30am or 10am...so we'll just try and if we don't make it, then ok. He's just starting to like Star Wars (Dh is showing him a movie each weekend) but not totally obsessed wtih it. So he'll be ok if we don't get in, but think he's like it if we could.

Remember that in order to sign up the participating child(ren) must be present, so you can't just go and sign up for them while they do something else.

Agreed.
