jeans at dinner?

One of the points I've been trying to make this entire thread is this. No matter what DCL states as the attire guidelines this type of person will NEVER follow it. They just don't care at all. Why punish those of us that DO follow the rules based on what someone like that will do? Those people don't care about guidelines no matter how strict or lax they are. Nothing will change them and they will always do whatever they please. They are also a SMALL percentage on the ship as has been stated time and again. Certainly they get to some people so they stand out, but at a dinner seating with 1200+ people, that ONE group with this dress and attitude always stands out in your mind.

As for the "what wearing jeans says about your personality"? I'm quite offended by that statement. I am one of the most polite and respectful people you will ever meet in your life, yet I wear jeans pretty much 6-7 days a week at home and I have worn jeans on vacation as well as a BALLGOWN on the Wonder. I am always as polite and respectful no matter what I wear. Same with DH and our two DDs. Politeness and respect for others are very important no matter the setting/attire.

I am semi one of those "It's my vacation I'll do whatever I want to", but that stops at interfering with someone elses enjoyment so no flames please. I follow DCL's guidelines and as upset you may be that they changed them, they are changed. You can be upset, but to look down on someone, or think less of them for following DCL's own guidelines is a sad, sad thing.

As someone said earlier in the thread, this is getting to the point of being comical and quite "High School" in feel. If you aren't wearing something as nice as everyone else you're ostracized. I'll reiterate what yet another person said earlier in this thread: Don't judge a book by it's cover. You'd miss out on some great stories that way.

Ditto! Can't say it much better.

I just saw this over on cnn and thought it was kinda fitting to this discussion. :)

The decline of manners in the US

My DH calls it the "Jalopy Effect" and it's actually true for many things including politics. A generation (or politician, etc) does something, the next generation (or politician, etc) modifies or "corrects" it by overcompensating and we weeble-wobble through the ages getting a bit closer each time to the "right" way of doing things.

Up until the 60's, manners, politeness, etc was taught to every child and was important to everyone to "become a decent person". The 60's and 70's came and our parents didn't stress it to us as much, if at all. (Am I showing my age?) Now we are becoming parents and seeing the effect that it's had on other people our age and our children, their friends, etc, and we will overcompensate and try to teach our children manners, politeness, etc and we weeble-wobble through.

There will certainly still be people who just don't care, but those of us that do will "correct" the societal behavior as much as we can. Isn't sociology fun? :)

What if the jeans in question are "Magic" jeans? Something very wonderful or life-changing may happen if they are worn? :rolleyes1 (sorry....just watched Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and feeling like jeans are just fine after watching that tear-jerker) ;)

Does Mama call them your "magic pants"? Sorry, I kinda doubt anyone will recognize the reference. DaVinci's Notebook, an a cappella group from the D.C. area. Hehe. :)

Just read ten pages of posts about people arguing over pants. I want my hour back!

What makes us sad is that when we booked after reading the board many people said how wonderful it was to have the dress code. This especially because of the Disney ships being built in the style of the old liners such as the Queen Elizabeth and Mary and they do resemble those beautiful old vessels.

I'm sure the elegant passengers of the Queen Elizabeth & Mary never had the pleasure of Pluto & Mickey whopping it up on Deck 9. Or Chip & Dale joining them for breakfast. :goodvibes

My family is the most important thing to me in the world and although I am on a ship with 2000+ passengers I don't pay attention to a one of them.

My focus is always on my three girls and as long as they are happy I am happy. The clothes that other people wear isn't even remotely on my radar.

It is so far down the list of important things in our lives that it doesn't even register especially while we are on vacation.

According to DCL jeans are fine, therefore a denim skirt (even if it wasn't fine before) is acceptable. That said, I'm pretty sure a denim skirt would have been allowed before they changed the rules as well. Despite the huge rift in people's opinions on jeans themselves, I'm not sure that anyone would object to a denim skirt.

After this thread though, I'm certain there are people who would look down on me for wearing my ballgown again (which I wouldn't do) because it's not Versace so who knows. ;)

GhostlyHitchhiker did you get that I was kidding? I was actually making fun of people who take the whole dress code way too seriously.

Yes, I knew you were joking. I just thought I'd chime in and continue the joke. :earboy2:

I have a big problem with how DCL enforces the new dress code. On our recent 7 day cruise, my wife made me wear my suit on formal/semi formal night; Although, I had to wonder why I was dressed better for Mickey Mouse than I do for church most Sundays. Our table mates showed up for semi formal night in shorts. I spent the whole night wishing my wife had let me wear my nice shorts. It just ruined my evening!!!

Seriously, other than having to pack additional clothes, I didn’t mind getting dressed up. But I think most people are like me, they are far more interested in the conversation, than what the people are wearing. Dress the way you want. It’s your cruise. From what I seen, most people are having so much fun, they don’t have time to notice what someone is wearing to dinner…And the answer to the question, yes I did see many people wearing jeans.

Whatever you are going to wear....Be forwarned!! Pack something very loose and flowing for the last day....!! This whole dressing every day has to be planned for the inevitable expansion. PLAN AHEAD !! Form fitting at the beginning and looser as the cruise progresses. :cake: :drinking1 :mickeybar I wouldn't lie about at thing like this..!! :earseek:
