January

Very high usage time for DVC is until after MLK weekend/marthons.
High usage time starts after these events are over.

I wouldn't say "everyone" is still off the first week. Most people have to go back to work and don't want to burn vacation days at the very beginning of the year. Schools are still out, and Disney needs to keep those rooms full. So the points are low to convince people to stay through that week.

I agree with supersnoop that many adults have to return to work even if the kids are off from school as they have used up their vacation time with the holidays. The first week of January is just not that popular with Disney guests unless you are do the Disney marathon, and most of those guests only come in for a few days.

As to the setting of all of January as adventure season, that began with OKW when it began in 1991 and has never been changed. At that time the vast majority of holiday breaks for grade to high schools started just before Christmas (usually Dec 23 was the last day if that was a weekday) and returned the day after Jan 1 when it was a Mon, Tues or Wed, on Mon if it was a Thur, Fri or Sat,and on Tuesday if was a Sun. I can remember in the 1990s and early 2000's going to WDW Jan 1 to 8 and parks actually went to having low crowds by Jan 3. It is fairly more recent phenomenon for more and more of those schools to go to longer break periods that include much of the first week of Jan with the result that though crowds do decrease quite a bit from Christmas week size starting about Jan 3 or 4, they still stay quite heavy the entire first week.

Why is January considered low time for DVC when everyone is off the first week on holiday?
Not just DVC.... hotels, restaurants and many travel options find a lull right after new years.

Many companies have staff purge all their vacations in December. January is new. January is the toughest time to find good unassigned parking spaces at work.

If you have free time, go ahead and book vacations during this bargain period.

January suits me just fine - right in the middle of Canadian winter is an excellent time to be in Florida!

That's us! We love to vacation a week in January when it's cold in PA! Very convenient that when adventure season dates fall for DVC are the times that benefit us to travel with our jobs!

Someone once told me that even July is the middle of Canadian winter.
