Making our first winter trip "home" this January. What can we expect for the weather? Is swimming possible?

We have gone to WDW every January for the past 7 years and the past 4 have been at the BWV. We are going again this January. The weather is extremely variable. We have had days in the high 80s and days in the low 40s. Usually it is somewhere in between. Even on days in the 40-50s, we have swam. The pools are well heated and there have been days in which it has been just my family and a family of ducks in the pool . You really have to be prepared for all sorts of weather. We bring down bathing suits and hats/mittens. AT night it can get chilly on even the warm days. However we absolutely love going in January. I have 4 children ages 8 down to 1 and my mom -age 82 - goes as well. The cool weather in the day makes the parks even more enjoyabe for everyone and the kids and my Mom can last much longer. We went once in the summer and it was just too hot for my group. Have fun...Rich

As the previous poster stated, it varies. We often go in January and the weather is usually pleasant, light jacket weather. Last January, the humidity was high even though a cold front came through - even the light breeze was bone chilling . Take a couple cold weather jackets and heavy outfits just in case. Most of our vacation money was spent on sweatshirts, until a found a nice beautiful leather jacket for 1/2 off at Rainforest Cafe. :) It is seldom cold enough here in Texas to wear "winter clothes".

We usually go in January too. Same experiences as those posting ahead of me. Only one year was it "chilly" the whole trip, and that was because it was damp. I find it usually averages out to about mid 60's -mid 70's most of the time. Last year it was in the 80's most often. In 1999, we had two days of damp 40's , and layers were essential. We usually pack one pair of shorts, two pairs of jeans, a sweat shirt and a few shirts and blouses to layer. I tend to wash once a day, so we don't need a LOT of extra clothes. We usually have a Disney jacket with us since we are returning to cold weather at home, and will need it when we get off the plane there. I also make sure I stick one of those little stretchy pair of gloves in for those chilly evenings when we are sitting at Illuminations or Fantasmic.

We went for a weekend in Jan '01 and it was 84 when we arrived. The next day it was rainy and 50 and then it was back in the 80's the following day. We look forward to going sometime in January to enjoy lower crowds. We went this last August and it was HOT!!!!! Don't think it will be much cooler when we go next July.

January is a great time to go "home". We do every Jan/Feb and I wouldn't go any other time. We have always had great weather - 70's to 80's when we have been there. I could not imagine going on vacation to spend the majority of the time standing in line in 90 degree heat - its just not worth it. My DW and I have 2 children ages 12 & 11 and have been taking them out of school every year for our vacation. I usually chech weather.com the week prior to going to get some idea of what the weather will be the week we are there so we can plan and pack accordingly. I have spoken to some CM's during our vacations and they have told us on a few occasions that we just missed some cold weather the week before we were there. I think you should go in Jan - you'll enjoy it!!!

Have a great time!!!!

Jim

January is the best time to visit WDW! It can be very cold, though. Two years ago there was actually a very heavy frost which killed many flowers and covered car windshields. I wore my winter coat most of the week. The windchill was in the 20's during the day. On other visits, the temps were in the 70-80's, so like others have posted, it varies. :D
