With all the refurbs, ride closures and weather worries, at times it felt like a January trip wasn't really going to be worthwhile, especially as we were coming from a far off land! But I'd have to say, it really was worth it. Here are a few of our highs and a couple of lows too.

Highs: THE DLH! The GCH has been our usual, but this time we though we'd give the redecorated DLH a try. Comfortable, understated and definitely in better shape than the GCH, we really enjoyed our stay here. Due to a conference the hotel was 100% full, but our 4 rooms were all on the same floor, next to each other, room service was better than prompt and housekeeping was excellent. What was a tired hotel has a new lease of life.
Lower crowds: the park was reasonably quiet, making for easy touring...especially when it rained Monday night!
Carthay Circle's Bar: a good place to wait out the rain..try the Sparkling Mare. Great service, and good quality food and drinks.
BB Fantasmic dinner - so much better than we expected. We've eaten here before and been underwhelmed. Not this time. Looks like the kinks for F! are well ironed out. We found our way without a hitch and the new system certainly made the park less congested in this area.
Revamped BTMRR, Alice...can't wait till they add some of this to the other dark rides!
And a very big thumbs up to Tortilla Joes, who seated 8 people at 7.30 on a Saturday night no problem, made guacamole tableside and entertained us with the great mariachi women whose smiles never flagged even after the tenth happy birthday.
Best of all... none of us came home with Mickey's magical measles!

Lows ;(Well just a few)
Ride breakdowns: maybe we were jinxed, but I've never had so many breakdowns. Indy, RSR (half an hour at the finish line....), TSMM, even the Little Mermaid. From one ride to the next there were hiccups and outright stoppages. We gave away our RSR FPs after the second stall.
Closures: Not as bad as we had anticipated, but still noticeable. We did miss the bobsleds, and of course the water rides, esp when it hit the late 70s, early 80s. There were some unexpected additions too like "its tough to be a bug' also being down.
Cast members: am I nostalgic or was there a time when they waved as you entered Main street, and got into the spirit of the rides (like TOT or HM)? We still met with some great CMs but most were pretty humdrum, bored-looking and at one point busy chatting with each other that and ignoring the growing queue. A few characters seemed to be out and about without minders, and at one point I saw Goofy physically shake off someone trying to put their arm around him as he headed into Main St. The guest was definitely in the wrong, but a minder would have made it unnecessary.
A big cheer for Sully's minder, Chris ,though - he made it all fun.
Naples: just don't do it! Run down, inefficient, totally ordinary.

And finally...though there is lots still to like about F! I really missed the chairs:). Felt like I was back in a school group sitting on the ground, and I noticed quite a few people had trouble sitting.

Overall, though, a very successful trip...so if you're worried about an off season visit, don't : there are plenty of compensations for a few missing rides.

So glad to hear the positives in your report! I'll be there this Fri, Sat & Sun and was kinda bummed out about all the closures. Not so much for me, but for a 1st timer that I'll be showing around. Glad you had a good trip!:thumbsup2

Thank you for your report. It looks like you made the best with all the closures, and still had a really nice time. :)

This is just the dose of positivity I needed. Thank you and I'm so glad to hear it was worth it!

Great to hear your trip report. Helps me get more excited for my trip in a week!

We're planning on going for 2-3 days at the end of February during a San Diego trip (myself, GF, and her 8 year old son - 1st timers). with all the closures and rehabs, we've been wondering for awhile now if it was even worth going - and then this morning i saw that the castle is even going to be covered! Now we have to have a serious conversation about going or not. Pirates, RSR, Screamin', and Indy are keeping me somewhat excited... but missing WOC, Matterhorn, Splash, GRR, and now the Castle being obstructed are serious downers.

Would love some feedback from anyone who has been recently - suck it up and go since this will be our one trip out west... or stay in San Diego, save $1000 and put it towards our Disney World trip next year?

I'm having the same dilemma as you. We are planning 3 nights at DL as part of a week in SoCal and I've toyed with the idea of scrapping the DL portion of the trip. I don't think that'll happen though because 1) my family would probably vote me off the island :rotfl2: and 2) coming from the East coast I'm not sure when we'll get back to California (hopefully not another almost 20 years like last time) and I'm not sure I could be soooo close to DL and skip it all together. What I am considering though is shortening our time there by maybe just doing two park days (1 full day in each park) and skipping the third day and hopper option. This will save us some money and also give us time to linger in San Diego our last day instead of beating the path up to get a partial park day in. Still mulling it over.

Other than the zoo, I can't think of anything in San Diego that even comes close to DLR, personally. But that is just me.

I get that the castle isn't pretty, but you walk right thru it on your way to rides. Its not like WDW, where its actually something to visit and spend time in (short of the brief Sleeping Beauty walkthru. So, yeah, its not attractive, but really? How much time does one need to stand in awe anyway? Its just a kodak moment, really. The best times are the rides. And even though there's 8 or 9 closed, 90%+ of the park is......OPEN!!!

But hey, end of Feb is when we're going too, so yeah, everyone probably should just cancel their trips for that time! ;)

Know the feeling...we had family with us who had been once ten years ago..my niece was just 4 then! So I had been a little worried too. But they loved it.

Thank you for your report! This was a spark of positivity that I really needed to see this morning as I'm feeling kind of down about our upcoming trip.
and I know this feeling too...without putting too many silver linings on it, the closures did make us try out a few different things, or at least revisit things we had got out of the habit of doing. Even rode the monorail for fun (well it was raining...;)) and caught a lift up main street on the fire truck. And the family project was dreaming up new poses for the ride photos (yay Photopass +)

Anyway, hope all you soon-to-be Disney travellers have a great stay.

Very glad you did not come home with Mickeys magical measles (LOL!)

How were BTMRR and alice revamped?

Thank you! As for the revamps, Alice had some new digital moments included, and BTMRR, after a lonnngg refurb has lots of new additions, including bats (again digital )and a much improved 'About to blow' segment in the mine. I think there is plenty of potential for well integrated additions like these to update other rides (maybe some of the other dark rides in Fantasyland)

Just got back from our 3 days at DLR (Weds, Thurs, Fri) and even with all the closures we still had a good time and were glad to see DLR for the first (and likely only) time. The 3 of us agreed that we all all prefer Disney World, but there are some things that Land does better, Indy being atop that list! The Indy ride was definitely a favorite of ours, and Dinosaur at AK can't hold a candle to it. BTMRR - w/ the new additions - is also better at Land... hopefully World will get that refurb soon. RSR (and all of Cars Land) was awesome, but was surprised to hear our 8 year old say he preferred Test Track. California Screamin' was also awesome - and rivals Rock'n Roller Coaster as his favorite ride.

Unfortunately, for us that's where Land's upside ends. The proximity of the 2 parks and Downtown Disney is nice... but we much prefer the Disney 'bubble' of World. And don't get me started on that lilliputian castle! (which was dark for the entirety of what seemed like a 2 minute firework show... which they don't even have every night!) I was most excited for an extended version of my favorite ride, POTC, which was good, but the beginning ride through a Louisianna bayou has nothing to do with pirates, but worst of all, since they have no room for Fantasmic and just threw it in the river they actually have to shut down POTC when Fantasmic is going because its basically right on top of the queue! That i can't overlook. I enjoyed California Adventure (Screamin' especially), but with both Condor Flats and Grizzly Peak closed (and WOC closed) it was tough to stretch out a full day there.

All in all we're glad we went but we're already planning for World in 2016!
