Tempted to jump back in to the DVC pool after a 7 or 8 year absence. Looking at a SSR contract that has points that will expire Feb 28th, 2021. (banked from 2019) By the time we close, we'd be looking at only January or February to use - any wild a-- guesses on availability at that point?

It will be tough, but if you have flexibility in terms of dates and willing to take whatever room sizes are available as well as split stay, you might be able to piece something together.

We don’t allow people to share what it currently looks like because it changes so often, but the past few years I have had trouble getting my DD and her friends 3 nights over a weekend in a studio at any resort for January 3 months out.

This year, lots of extra points around so you really won’t know until you can actually book because what is there or gone today could be the exact opposite in December when you will be able to actually book.

It will probably take 90-120 days from the time you sign a purchase agreement to actually get the points into your account. Maybe longer due to the approaching Holidays.

Make your offer as though those banked points aren't there. IMO, they have no worth because by the time you actually get access to the points, they'll either be expired or there won't be anything left to book. If you are able to use or rent them, consider it a lucky bonus.

If you're flexible for 1BR and for weekdays, should be no problem for availability.

But I know timing has been brutal how long it takes to get your points with resale lately.

You are talking about being able to get a reservation two to three months out at best. In the past for that time of year, openings that close to an arrival date have usually been difficult to find although SSR may have some and possibly even a few others such as OKW or Kidani, but even those openings that have existed have usually been limited -- e.g., two or three consecutive nights in the same room but not more may be open, and studios tend to be less available than other rooms, even at SSR. The two modern exceptions to that lack of availability at two months out are the Poly Bungalows and CCV cabins, 2BR rooms with prohibitive per night point costs.

There is some minimal hope possibly added by the pandemic. The closer we are now getting to dates, such as now October to December, the more we are seeing some things open up that in the past would never have been open at two to three months out. It is a result of many cancelling existing reservations for covid reasons -- they do not want to risk the possible exposure, they may not want to do WDW with existing covid rules (e.g., no marathon in Jan 2021), they are facing new financial difficulties that prevent the trip, or they cannot go because of travel or quarantine restrictions applicable to their countries or states. If those issues continue, you could possibly have a better chance to book something than in the past for Jan or Feb.

In any event, whether you might be able to get a reservation In Jan or Feb should likely not be a consideration in deciding to make the purchase, You should instead assume it will not be possible to reserve something in determining whether to buy now, or what to offer for the applicable contract if you decide to buy.

I’m booking for February 2021 now in a studio and could get a week at all the usual suspects, and 1br in a few as well, but many view types are starting to go waitlist only. I wouldn‘t count on a full stay anywhere in 90-110 days.
