Today I'm taking my Girl Scout troop (11 girls) to the local food pantry to stock the shelves. I'm so proud of my DD she collected 25 bags of food! The entire back of my car is filled! Anyway last night I spoke with the lady who runs the pantry and she said that they also take travel soap, shampoo, and conditioner from hotels. I told DD and she mentioned that we should give all our mickey soap and shampoo. She loves to pull those out and pretend that she is in a hotel....a WDW hotel! I said "are you sure you want to get rid of them all?" She.."yes, daddy said we could go every 2 years to disney, so I'll get more" Me..." that's true but we just went last December and it hasn't even been a whole year." Her in a kinda wistful voice..." That's okay...at least we get to go." :lovestruc I hugged her so hard! I wished I could have told her that we are leaving in less than 3 months! Keeping this secret is getting so hard!

I'm off to help Girl Scouts!

Awwww what a sweet story, it made me a little teary!
Yeah Girl Scouts, what a great job your daughter and her troop did!

I was just thinking it's time to part with my draw of hotel soaps, what a great idea I'll have to see if somewhere near here does it!

Wow, three days of World Series games and I'm already 35 pages behind!! One the Series is over and my Phillies take home the trophy (hopefully!) I'll be much more on top of this...I be we'll be at part VI by January!

Aw, that is the sweetest story! :goodvibes

I know, the secret gets harder everyday. I worked on my Christmas "surprise box" this afternoon a bit. It's going to be so awesome!! :yay:

How great!! I've got to tell our Brownies to do that too! I think we're doing it in December. I for one have TONS of travel soaps etc. from hotels. I can't believe all of you who are surprising your kids. I told DD7 about that and she said, "mom, next time we go, I want you to surprise me too!" That's going to be tough!!

So for all of you snowbirds taking kids out of school, do the kids miss a lot? Does it hang over your vacation like a big black cloud? My parents always made it sound like such a bad idea, I feel bad about it now.

I'm trying to talk my uncle into letting my 2 cousins 16 & 13 come, but beside $$ one of the issues I worry about is taking them out of school. They also aren't the best students in the world. Not because they're dumb but because they are lazy and have two of the most disgusting parents in the world who don't care. Which is why I think they could use a little Disney in their lives!
I think it would be a great incentive for them to do well, but I don't know about missing 5 days.
I know there are a couple of teachers here too, so how do you feel about kids, who aren't your best, missing work?

My kids rarely miss school. Maybe 1-2 days a year. They are both good students, so far! So I don't feel bad about it at all. It can be a little hard on the older one with all the make-up work, but it is so worth it.

It probably would be hard on a 13 & 16 year old to stay caught up, especially if they are not good students in the first place. But I know what you mean about wanting to share WDW with them when they don't have the greatest life at home, I would love to do that for my nephew.

With all that said, I probably wouldn't take my kids out for more than 5 days, even though the school allows for 10 "excused educational trip absence" days.

I have discussed this a few times too. My kids are really young (2nd gr. and Kind.) so for them they don't miss much in terms of work. My second grader's teacher and I were emailing about me volunteering and I mentioned the dates I was pulling her out and why. She said, "Sorry, she can't go unless you take me with you!" :) I was so happy she was humorous about it. But my DD7 is also a very good student and ahead of her grade level in both math and reading. So I don't worry about her falling behind etc. When the kids are older, it's harder to miss school with testing, more homework etc. I'd be concerned if the kids are struggling and would miss more than a couple days. Perhaps a Disney trip for them would be best on a school break.

I think it's probably more difficult for older kids to miss school. Mine are in 5th and 3rd grades, and are both good students, so I'm not worried about them missing three days. But trying to coordinate with all those different teachers for that many days would be challenging.

Meghan - we do have a Lacrosse team here, the Minnesota Swarm and they play at the same arena the Minn. Wild does (My DH works there). I bet you have a lot of fun. Lacrosse is finally getting popular here and the high schools are just starting to offer it.

Ah yes, the Swarm. We beat them every time we play them! :) The team I dance for plays where the Buffalo Sabres play. Most of the teams are like this. The lacrosse team plays in the same arena as the NHL team.

I just got caught up with everyone! My post count is much lower than I'd like it so be prepared for some major chatting!

We're taking our DD out of school for 5 days on this trip. Last year, she only missed about 3 days (not in a row) due to sickness. She is already ahead of the curve, so I'm not worried about taking her out of school. We will probably have her write her own little trip report about all the things she learned at WDW. If they do give us work for her to do, she will do it on the plane and have it done in a flash.

We will be there Jan 18-25 at SSR. Our first trip as DVC members, staying on developer's points.

Our meals are:

Jan 18-arrive in Orlando at 2pm-Chef Mickey's 8pm

Jan 20-LeCellier lunch 11:35am

Jan 22-Mom and DD#2-CRT at noon; Dad and DD#1-CP at noon

I'd like to try T-Rex while we're there. We usually hit Trail's End Buffet at some point, depending on when we get tired of counter service! Earl of Sandwich is another favorite, and will be convenient since we'll be near DTD. We don't like to spend a lot of our touring time on sit down meals. Breakfasts will be in the villa.

:welcome: to the Snowbirds! And a great big welcome to all the other ladies who have joined our thread. It's a great place to hang out and chat!

What a sweetheart! I know how hard it is to keep a secret because I'm in the same boat! We were watching Peter Pan last night as a family and my DD brought up WDW. My DH and I just looked at each with a big smile. If only she knew! This is going to be the best surprise ever!

  WELCOME WELCOME to the SNOWBIRD PARTY!!

Thanks for all the advice snowbirds!

At this point, I really don't think it is a wonderful idea for them to miss school, they are older, and like I said need the school work. I'm feeling a little guilty about going without them, they loved it so much the last time and are dying to go back! I guess if they're dad changes his mind I'll take them, otherwise I probally shouldn't push it.

So one of the few franchied Earl of Sandwich shops opened up here in my town (pssst Trixie!) so I can have it whenever I want, now. This might well mean I don't need to go there in DTD! It's pretty good stuff but it is pretty expensive, here in town. And since their sandwiches aren't true HOT sandwiches (like a local grill might make), more like Quiznos-style, it's hard to justify the price. I can go to Jimmy John's across the street and get two (cold) sandwiches for the price of one warm EoS!

Of course, I do live in a college town/work for a large U, so I'm pretty spoiled by my food options (for not being in a major city). Today my coworker and I debated between two fast Italian, two kinds of sub places, two sit down and 1 counter service Chinese restaurant, and a small handful of burrito joints!

So, we've talked about our kids and their Halloween costumes. Did any adults dress up or are you going to dress up? What are you wearing?

What a miserable day here again in Buffalo. The wind is really whipping around making it even colder. Jen and Soleil- I envy you two! I would give ANYTHING for 60 degrees right now! This kind of weather makes me just want to stay inside and curl up under a blanket. Of course, I have my first dance team practice of the season tonight. I'm looking forward to it so I can learn more about our new members, but it's so gross outside! Well, I'm making some soup for the whole fam and I'm hoping it will help my sinuses. I love autumn, but not like this!
