I am very seriously considering doing the 1/2 marathon in January 2011 and DS10 and DD7 want to do the 5K. How are the rates, generally speaking, for that weekend? Are they usually 'high' rates or do they drop because it's after the holiday rush? Have they offered any discounts for that weekend in the past? Any advice would be truly appreciated on costs....so I can convince my DW that it will be fun and worth the expense.

From my experience over the past several years, I've found that the discounts over marathon weekend have slowly declined. I think we had a discounted room for 2006 and even 2007, because the weekend falls during value season, but I know that CMs have mentioned lately that marathon weekend is a “sold out” weekend for the resorts. I know we actually had to pay MORE this year for our room over the Thurs-Sun of marathon weekend as compared to the rest of our week’s stay.

Maybe someone more familiar with the historical discount codes can help.

Great idea. You can tel your DH it is a fun weekend! But cheap? Not really.

Generally the rates are low at that time of the year except Thur, Fri and Sat of marathon weekend. The AAA or FLA resident rates didn't apply for those days. I did get a great rate for Sunday. Others might have but I was told no go. I think someone said the annual pass rate worked, not sure because I didn't have an annual pass.

Don't quote me but I think I paid $92 plus tax a night for Pop Century but then paid $55 for Sunday. Last year it was much cheaper as I did get AAA rates.

Hope this help,
Duane

Check out Mousesavers.com for the historical rates and discounts. Here's a link...

I stayed on DVC points this year, but there was a discount that came out to the general publlic for room rates, as well as ones for AP holders. Also, AAA discounts exist (you can get directly through Disney) although these types of discounts don't come out til later in fall. So one strategy is to book a roomonly reservation at full price, and then when discount rates are published, call back and see if you can get that rate.

Good luck!

I have been DVC for some time but agree that if you subscribe to MouseSavers web mails you will know when specials pop up. You really will not see a special until usually August through October when they start to see the occupancy rate trends. I would book early through the main number (407WDWisney number); not Sports Reservations. You can always apply a code in the future if a great discount comes out.

I was able to find decent rates for Thurs-Mon for Marathon weekend. I waited until the AP holder discounts came out and unfortunately wasn't able to find anything for Friday night. Luckily I entered the race as part of a charity so they were able to get me a room at Pop for Friday at $90 which I consider expensive but since it was the only thing I could find besides the presidential suites I took it. I was able to add Thursday night on for only $55 a night including tax. Then Saturday-Monday I got a great rate at AKL - I think it was like $140 for a standard that ended up being savannah view.

January is usually their lowest rates - its just tough getting availability for that weekend if you wait too long.
