This is the Orlando Sentinel's report on the sorry affair.

Presumably 'pastie' has a different meaning in the States, but I can hardly see through the tears at the moment! :rotfl:

We didn't manage to stay awake until halftime, but there's a re-run on Sky Sports 2 at 7pm this evening. What's the betting they don't show it?

Oh, apparently you need to be registered to view the article. Here it is in full:

NEW YORK -- CBS and MTV both say they had no idea that their Super Bowl halftime show would wind up with singer Justin Timberlake tearing off part of Janet Jackson's costume, exposing her breast. Timberlake blamed a "wardrobe malfunction."

"CBS deeply regrets the incident," spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said after the network received calls about the Sunday night show. The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast. Her nipple was covered by a pastie.

The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.

The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.

"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

MTV issued a contrite statement in which it also apologized, saying the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance."

Timberlake said he did not intend to expose Jackson's breast.

"I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."

Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."

Well, given her brothers' use of various plastic parts, cosmetic surgery, etc.... among other things, it might be that there were more non-original than original parts revealed.

Yeah well, are any of you buying the "it was unintentional" response? What a bunch of hooey.

It may of have resembled a pastie, but it was actually a metal piercing. When viewing the closeup, it didn't cover up much.

This was an obvious attempt to "one up" Britney/Madonna. What next?

We've just seen the re-run and, needless to say, they cut away at the critical moment. Not a pasty in sight - Cornish or otherwise!

..well thanks, steph! I could have lived without it...

Mike:p

:p Hah - put's Judy Finnigan's exposing of the boobies up there with the best:eek: ::yes::

I agree!!

Saw pictures of this 'piercing' in the paper this morning - weirdest piercing I've ever seen. :D

Totally agree with you Steph, very doubtful that this was an 'accidental' move!

Astrid

No kidding. Didn't it look comfy to you?

Like Debbie, I too think it's hilarious about the pastie.

What I think is strange is the effect a bare boob is having in the US. It seems to me that they are quite happy to show pictures on the news of police brutality, shootings, murders etc., but the whole country appears to be in uproar over a bare boob! Very strange.

Indeed, indeed.

Couldn't agree more Ellay, for heavens sake it's a breast.
Though I do think the pastie thing is hysterical to us Brits!!

Bare skin and sexual content are fine on the telly--in their proper time slot. What was so offensive about this is that it was prime time. The Superbowl is something that all of us watch with our entire families. IMHO the Janet's saggy mammary glan was the least of it. The dirty dancing was tacky and the lyrics to those songs were not appropriate for young children.

I suppose the question really centers on whether or not you think of the NFL as "family" television... but there you go.

Bill, I'm not a regular football watcher, but I do like to watch the Super Bowl--mostly for the commercials (I thought some of them were pushing the envelope as well).

We parents are constantly admonished by the powers that be that it is our responsibility to screen what our children watch. I don't let my son (9 years) watch CSI, Wire in the Blood, etc. I know what to expect out of those programs. That halftime program was over the top, and should have come with a parental warning.

I watched the show with my son, and after viewing the Janet/Justin stunt, he turned to me and said "Why did they do that? That was stupid." Out of the mouths of babes.

I agree, there's a time and place to do something like that.
When children are watching, you have to understand they are very imaginative children...that was overstepping the mark for a "family" programme.

My Daughter is 4 and she often comes to me and asks me, about certain things, these are things that she sees on t.v etc.
Like at the moment, this whole new advertisement to stop people smoking, (the fat dropping from a cigerette)..she squirms when she sees that it makes her feel sick...she also cries when she sees an advertisement with people with no heads....

I think children dont need to see certain things, T.V has a BIG influence in childrens imaginations.,there is times and places for silly antics like that.

It wouldnt of bothered me so much if it was a MISTAKE,but that clearly was meant to happen! and it was wrong,It may be funny to an adult but to a child? what does it represent?

Sorry to go on!
