Jan trip w/Feb UY - strategery question

I'm hoping to do a quick 2 night trip with my son in January.

With a Feb UY, I understand there is a risk that if I have to cancel the Jan trip I'll lose those 2013 points forever.

Can I mitigate that risk by banking my remaining 2013 points, and then borrowing the 30 or so points for the January trip? If I borrow 2014 points and then cancel, would they just go back to 2014?

And yes, I have already confirmed that I can get a room for the two nights I want.

Borrowed points can't be returned. So in your plan, if you cancel you will have to use the borrowed points by Jan 31.

No, once borrowed, points cannot be returned. Borrowed 2014 points would soon expire, just like the 2013 points.

If you still have other 2013 UY trips you might consider the insurance...(I think they charge you per use year, not per trip)

Thanks for the quick replies. We do have a large family trip planned this August, so maybe trip insurance would be a good idea if it applies to the UY and not the trip itself.

Is the insurance sold via the DVC website?

Doesn't look like the insurance covers loss of points.
