Jan...Too cold to swim at Castaway Cay?

The water is cold for the first foot in and then for some reason after that it was warmer. Everyone was in the water on Christmas Day......it was heaven on Serenity Bay

Our first DCL cruise was Jan. 2009. Kids had a blast in the water at both Castaway and in Nassau, it was a bit chilly for me but I managed to go in. To me it felt like the lake waters in early summer up here in NYS.

I appreciate all of your information. In 2007 we cruised and I brought wet suits for my kids; Our friends did not. Mine went into the water and were very comfortable. So after listening to all of you, I went online to scuba.com and purchased two new wetsuits for two of my kids. I hope that with these they will feel comfortable in the water swimming with the stingrays at CC. Two weeks from today....Can't wait!!!

It all depends. We were there a few years ago in January on the Western and it was very warm!

We were there in February and though the water was chilly, we still went on the water slides a few times. Renting bikes was super fun too! So there are other options besides swimming, don't worry.

We just got back from our Dream cruise 12/22. The water at CC was to cold for me to swim, but I did stick my feet in. It didn't slow DD10 down at all! She swam for hours, as did most kids and many adults.

It depends on where you are from as well. We're Texans and used to warmer weather. The folks from England were commenting on how nice the water was. You'll need the bathing suits for the pools anyway, so go ahead and pack them! :)

We went last January and swam. But we are from England so warm is different for us!

We were at CC 3 weeks ago. The air temp was nice...probably around 80. My kids swam and enjoyed it. My husband saw a sign somewhere that said the water temp was 78.

Was on Castaway Cay Christmas Eve! Water and air temperature were great!!!!!! Been on 4 cruises with DCL this year, warmest water of the year!

Enjoy!

I was on this same cruise and in Castaway Christmas Eve. I read somewhere when we got off the ship that the water was at 78 degrees (not sure if that's accurate or not). At first touch we def thought it was cold but it got better once you went in. There were tons of people in the water and everyone was having a good time. My 2 year old was not a fan though so he just sat and played with sand but did splash around in Spring a Leak where I thought the water was freeeezing. :confused3

We are also from the Chicago area, but found the water to be a bit chilly and it was also overcast and cool. We sailed the first week of Dec 2009. We are going again the first week of Dec 2012.

We're from Chicago, and have been to CC twice in January (2010 and 2011). We found it too cool to swim in the water both times.

January 2004 and we loved it. Water was great and swam all day.

The week after Thanksgiving this past year (2011) we wound up having a double dip at CC. The first day we all went in and the water was freezing, even for the kids. The second day the kids did not want to go back in the cold water and spent time at the kids club on CC while hubby and I laid under towels at Serenity Bay. It is variable (weather varies widely this time of year, and your tolerence depends on where you are from) so, as has been said, I would prepare for any contingency.

I can't fathom it being nearly as cold as water skiing Flathead Lake during Memorial Day weekend. (Full body shiver)

I had been wondering this myself for our December cruise, though it would take some pretty cold water to keep me away from Pelican Plunge! ;)

Water in the Caribbean is mid-70's in the winter from what I've gathered. That's the temperature year-round for the Pacific ocean here on Maui! Basically the only deterrent for not going to the beach here is wind/storms/bad undertows.

Even if its "cold" for the Caribbean, if you're okay with Hawaii water (as most people seem to be if our crowded beaches are any indication), you'll probably be fine. A matter of perspective. :confused3

I'm laughing so hard cuz I've BEEN there! Only mine was on Sweeney lake, and I'm now deathly scared of water THAT cold from my own Memorial day experience! Brrrrrrrrr.... 70 degree water is a HOT TUB compared to the MT lakes!!!
