Jamming Cell Phones

I do'nt like this idea at all. I always have my phone on vibrate, regardless of where I am--home, office, shopping, theatre. That way I can look to see who's calling and generally let it go to VM, but excuse myself to take the call in an appropriate place (the lobby) if it's urgent. If my son calls me with an emergency at home, I want to be able to get the call.

I think the problem is with people whose phones ring loudly, then they have a ten minute conversation about their neighbors toe fungus.

It's too bad that a lot of rude boors want to spoil it for everyone!

No I wouldn’t

Now if movie theaters would realize I’m unwilling to pay $80 for family of four to see a movie adjust their prices they would most likely see a whole lot more of us.

I would not go to the movies if my cell phone was jammed. I too keep it on vibrate in movie theatres, etc. but if one of my DSs or my DH want to reach me in an emergency, I would want to be able to respond after excusing myself. The movie industry is not in trouble because of cell phones. They are in trouble because they raised their prices so high that people have found other ways to entertain themselves. A family of four could easily spend $75 for an evening at the movies to see a film that they can see on DVD a couple of months later. They need to look at the product they are selling and the cost of that product, not cell phones.

It would make me seriously stop and think and possibly go to the movies less often. I work in IT and am on 24-hour support so it is necessary for work to contact me (and they have in a theater before). I keep my phone on vibrate and if I have to make a call, I will go out to the hallway to do so. If it is known that I am out of service for several hours, it would not be a good thing.

Honestly, the number of cell phone calls that have disrupted my movie watching is nil compared to the number of movies disrupted by the patrons themselves talking, running up and down the aisles, and in the worst case, smoking in the theater

My husband and I go to the movies almost every Friday or Saturday night and I would NOT go if they jammed my cell phone. We have a teenager who is usually doing something else at the time and I would not be able to enjoy the movie if I knew she couldn't get in touch with me.

It might make me more likely to go. Because of rude people, it takes a movie I really want to see to tempt me into a theater. I go once a year, if that often. I don't know if jamming cell phones is enough.

It wouldn't make me more likely to go. The poor quality of offerings is what keeps me home. Although I could do without the small children seeing R rated movies.

Bad idea.

Free socks to stuff in the face of the talkers behind you - Great idea! :thumbsup2

Cell phone conversations are only one of many reasons why going to the movie theater has changed from an enjoyable evening out to an experience that can more likely be classified as annoying, anger-inducing, and a complete waste of money. In addition to inane cell phone conversations we have:

  • people providing a running commentary to the film in loud voices
  • screaming children that parents refuse to remove from the theater
  • children talking constantly through the film because their parents chose to bring them to a movie that they cannot understand
  • people smuggling stinky food in noisy wrappings into the theater
  • theaters selling stinky food in noisy wrappings to their patrons
  • people waving laser pointers at the screen (yes, people still do this here)
  • being forced to sit through 10-15 minutes of commercials (not movie previews) before the start of the film
  • out of focus features
  • incompetent theater staff who do nothing to control the behavior of the patrons in the theater
  • incompentent theater staff who do not insure the quality of the film presentation by checking the focus and sound of the film as it starts
  • incompentent theater staff who routinely oversell shows and then do not do their part to insure that patrons take their coats off seats and make room for everyone
And that is why I have a home theater, where you will find me on movie nights, with homemade pizza, top fillm and sound quality, and good, quiet company.

Signed, liamsaunt, who worked in a decent movie theater for almost 10 years, many moons ago.

I always put mine to vibrate and if it rings I run out of the theater to answer it....I wouldn't go if I couldn't be reached, especially if my daughter was not with me.....my cousin carrys this device around with him and he pushes a button and it jams the persons cell phone within a certain number of feet from him...he uses it in restaurants and the movies if people talk at their tables or in the theater!

DH is often on call and we have a kid and I have an elderly mom in town so...no, I would not go to the theatre if the cell phone was jammed. We keep them on manners mode (vibrates and does not light up) and answer them in the lobby.

I do like that our theatre has a rewards card--you earn points toward free popcorn, drinks, and movie tickets. Drinks and popcorn are refillable and they also offer a refillable popcorn bucket around Christmas time that is good until April. We have several big chains around here which is great for the consumer.

Lets see, $10.00 tickets, $ 4.50 Popcorn, $ 3.50 Drinks, Crap Features, People Talking, People getting up in the middle of the movie, Dirty Conditions. I think I would put Cell Phones 10 th on my list of things people don't go to the movies. Infocus projector, Bose Sound System, Lazy Boy Cinema Seats and about three months after the movie comes out. I will use my basement cinema.

If I lived in MI and had this option I would go to movies more.
For me costs and no one to go with cause me to not want to go.

If someone is carrying on in a movie theater (being loud, rude, etc.), I go find an employee and complain. I've done this twice and both times, the people settled down.

If cell phones were jammed, I'd be afraid of an emergency at home. I set mine on vibrate during a movie like most of you.

Yep I'd go more.
When I go to a movie...my phone is OFF.

I like having the break of people finding me.

Movies have been around longer than cell phones and lots of people still went.
