Sorry to ask this question again, but could I have the link or suggestions on how people clean the jacuzzi before using. I liked the ideas for cleaning posted here better than what I have done for cleaning in the past. Thank you.

I have some suggestions in my Jacuzzi 101 link on my DVCHHI website.

For cleaning, I was told to run some automatic dishwasher detergent through...low suds and good cleaning power. Also heard that Cascade was good for same reason.

Doesn't housekeeping give it a thorough cleaning in between guests, as they would the bathtubs at the Disney resorts?

Yes Jillpie, they are clean upon arrival.

Some people like to run cleanser through the jets as an extra precaution. It also should be cleaned after each use. These instructions come in handy considering that housekeeping is not done on a daily basis.

Yes, Housekeeping does clean them before our arrival, but this is a way to make sure their is no residual left over.

Oops! Spelling mistake - should have been there nor their. Getting excited about upcoming trip and not paying attention to grammar. Sorry.

It also should be cleaned after each use.

Cleaned how, Reg? We have the same tub at home (actually the larger model) and I can tell you after 3 years, we have only cleaned the jets about 4 times. We, of course, do clean the interor of the tub after each use, but, the jets, no way.

I was referring to cleaning the interior after each use.

We also have a jacuzzi at home. Even without using soaps and oils while soaking in it, there's still a residue left that needs to be dealt with.

Thanks Reg.
I was hoping that is what you meant. I would hate to think I was being lax by not cleaning the jets each time I used it. :)

Some people reported some black looking gunk coming out of the jets about a year ago, I'd probably put some bleach in the HOT water to make sure that I kill some organisms or bacteria or who knows what is still living in the plumbing. Look at all the scary things that 20/20 found lurking in the water lines of dentist offices.

I have experienced that gunk in our tub at home. There is a chemical you can purchase for that very reason, however, baking soda works equally as well with hot water.

I recall a thread about a year or so ago, before we went to BWV & OKW last Dec. It said to take 1/2 cup powdered automatic dishwasher detergent and 1/4 cup bleach, fill the tub with hot water and run it for 5 minutes or so with the above 2 additives. Be sure to rinse well after done with that treatment, but it will clean anything left in the tub or jets prior to your use. We did this on both trips and felt very comfortable using the tubs, never saw any gunk.

Mrs Snowgod,

Combining bleach and dish washing detergent creates a VERY Toxic gas!! If you do use the two together make sure the tub is full first and add them seperately to the water, really disinfects (kills anything) but do be careful.:earseek:

Although it is always a good idea to be very careful when mixing any household cleaners or chemicals, this information is not true. Most dishwashing detergents contain bleach (look at the label on your and you will see).
I think the 2 chemicals you are thinking of are bleach and ammonia . Mixing bleach and ammonia containing products creates a dangerous gas called chloramine. Always read labels before mixing anything to see if there are any warnings and never mix acids (like toilet bowl or drain cleaners) with anything. Here's alink to a page about the dangers of mixing chemicals.

There are various "recipes" for cleaning the jets on whirlpools, some including baking soda. The most common recipes include automatic dishwashing detergent and bleach. Here are links to instructions from Kohler (one of the big US manufacturers) and American Standard . Both of their recipes include 2 teaspoons of dishwasher detergent and 1/2 cup (4 ounces) of bleach. I use this recipe in my whirlpool at home and I can tell you that if you use more dishwashing detergent, you will have quite a bit of foam to clean up. The jets really can't be disinfected because you can't get in to them, but at least you can make the inside area cleaner.
