Jackson & Perkins

Has anyone ever ordered anything from Jackson and Perkins - specifically roses? I really want one of the new Disneyland roses that are coming out next season from them. I work at one of the largest nurseries in my state, and we will not be carrying that particular one. I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on J & P (how the plant is shipped, size, etc...). Thanks!!

I have had mixed experiences with J&P. The plants are large and in good shape when received... but I have had several roses NOT come out of dormancy - i.e. they died. On the otherhand, some have done very well. Considering the prices of this company - I would expect a better survival rate than what I have experienced. I have had better luck with Wayside Gardens. The only negative I can say about Wayside... is that they often backorder something... and after a long period.... finally admit that they are not going to fill your order as placed. By then it is usually getting rather late in the season and if you were counting on those plants... you are out of luck.

The company I have been MOST pleased with for mail order plants - is High Country Gardens. They do not do roses - but for the other items they carry - I have found the plants to be EXTREMELY strong and hardy. I think their prices are reasonable too.

Unfortunately, I am way too late. Our potted roses from J&P have already been shipped to us, and they are growing in our greenhouses. If I wanted just 1, I would have to pay freight charges, which would defeat the purpose and make it very expensive. I think I might just take a chance on J&P. (Hey, maybe Santa will order it for me!!! )

I have had very mixed results with J&P and like DD I much prefer Wayside Gardens. However, try it. If it doesn't work I think they will refund or replace your purchase.

I just checked the J&P website and the Disneyland roses are buy 1 get 1 free!! That really helps with the prices. I guess I'll have to order one now!

My dh and boys gave me a Disneyland rose from J&P for Mother's Day last year. It bloomed and grew really well. This year it's not looking as good as last though. I'm fighting black spot and it's on the small side. I'm not really sure why. It is planted in a large container and sits in full sun. Anyway, I tinker with it every couple of days and it seems to be getting better.

I'll have to wait until next year on this one. It's already past the last order date for my zone. Oh well.
