...went to the allergist yesterday and Jack is allergic to fish. All fish. If it lives in the water, Jack can't eat it. The Doctor praised him up and down for recognizing the symptoms of an allergy and telling me what shrimp (his original reaction) made him feel like. We are very fortunate that these allergies developed after he was old enough to vocalize. I feel badly for people whose children are too small to do so.

Looks like we'll be eating a lot of chicken, pork and beef around here.

Allergies are a pain. I'm also glad he was able to tell you what was going on. At least now you know.

Good Luck!

Does the DR. think this is a permanent situation or will he outgow it?

FYI. My sister and I are both very allergic to all types of fish as well. You said shrimp caused his first reaction and thats what got my attention. In most cases when its fish and shellfish. You will also be allergic to Iodine. and it's actually the Iodine in the products you are eating. For some reason DR's are somewhat misinformed about this. I did not learn this myself until I was in my late twenties. It is definately somthing you should be aware of with him. Iodine is in some random things. Not a huge deal. But somthing you should know in case of a hospitolization where it could be concern! As far as allergies go its very easy to manage. Stay away from sea food restaurants that fry alot of foods. Somtimes you have cross contamination issues from Say chicken fingers nad fries Simply because they have been fried in the same oil. Also A big trigger is cesar salad as the dressing is in fact made with anchovy paste. there is also one greek dressing which has the paste as well maybe its Christos? Good Luck, he will be fine!::yes::

also remember most salt in the US is iodized even if it is not sea salt. Miso soup has been another problem for us. My daughter is vegetarain partly due to here many allergies and miso is soy bean paste soup. Often the base it is made with is fish broth. We found that out to our dismay at the Japanese pavillion in EPCOT.

I've always used iodized salt.... he has never mentioned his throat bothering him. Guess I'll ask the pediatrician about that on Thursday when we go in.

The thing I feel badly about is that he really liked lobster, shrimp and steamed clams. Poor little guy. This is 2 major food allergies popping up in 6 months- I'm hoping no more come along.

I can sympathize. When I was about 10 maybe, I also developed a shellfish allergy. It started with just shrimp, but has increased now to *all* shellfish (which STINKS because I used to love shrimp and still love crab and lobster) and is starting to be all fish. :(
