I have never read any of Lee Child's books, but happen to have Echo Burning on my book shelf. This is apparently the 5th Jack Reacher novel. Do I need to read them in order or can I understand this one without reading any of the others?

Thanks,
Karen

I like reading a series in order, but with Child's books each book is pretty independent enough from the rest. In fact, one of his later books (I forget which one) is about Reacher's Army days which goes back in time from the present day stories. I hope you like the book.

They are good I like them. I didn't start reading them in order and have no trouble following them. There really isn't any past events mentioned from previous books, so its easy just to start wherever you want.

Enjoy

Yup -- I started in the middle and never had a problem. They're self-contained. They are really, really good.

In fact, I'm under the impression that the latest (or one of the latest) is something of a prequel, going back in time, so even if it's a new release, it covers an earlier period of Reacher's life.

read THE ENEMY first, that is the one set in the near past, it will give you a better feel for the character even though it is the 5th or 6th installment.

Thanks for the replies!!

also, they have been trying to start a movie francise for years but they cannot find the right actor with the physical atributes to play the role. 6 foot 5, 250 plus lbs and mean as hell.

Can't wait to start the book!!

I also like the Jack Reacher stories. Maybe if they found someone that fit the part so well personality wise, everyone would overlook that he wasn't as huge as the book character. Nicolas Cage might could have done it. What about Vin Diesal? And, there is that guy, what's his face, he has played in a lot of action movies, dark hair.... And I like that guy on Criminal Minds. What a hunk!

physically, vince vaughn, not sure he has the acting chops for it.

Those books are some of my favorites! My 89-year-old mother devoured them and mourned when she finished the last one. They are so well written, you hang on to every word.

I LOVE these books, and think of him as the "love him and leave him" megahero;). It's kind of like the old "Incredible Hulk" tv series, he always ends up walking away at the end of the book, to start the next one somewhere else, so you really don't need to read them in order.

I think an Aussie would have to play him, someone a little cold, but sexy, cerebral, etc. How about Sam whats-his-name that was in Terminator Salvation?

he is only 5ft 10in

How about Steven Seagal? Maybe he's on the old side now. How old is he anyway? I think that any male 6' or taller would do. Most male actors are on the short side I think anyway.
