To start with let me point out I am not very I.T. Lit.
I had to update the company accounts package today so called the software support line to talk me through it. Now to be fair they did ask if I had a backup and I said yes the system backs up to a DAT storage tape every night.
OK we went around the office and up dated the software with a few minor systems hiccups that we sorted out without too much fuss. When it came to converting the data, the system locked up partway through and we left it for a couple of hours incase it was just the fact that it was processing such a large amount of data. Well it didn't recover and we had to load the data from the backup disc. I know you have guessed that the backups where all corrupt.
I then got hold of the IT support company that installed the backup system
and asked them very nicely why the system they installed and supported had not been backing up since they had installed it and why we had been wasteing our time for the past two years putting a tape in it every night!
They then spent several hours looking into it and I started to plan how to put ten months worth of accounts back onto the system. I was feeling quiet sick by now.
I got a phone call from the I.T. support company at 5.30 and the VERY NICE lady in their accounts support department said she had located an uncorrupted backup on our system and had been able to convert it to the latest version. She gave me the file location. I asked her to save a copy on her PC which she has done and hopefully the software company will be able to update the data from that file.
We had the I.T. company in to make sure we had a belt and braces system and I've still ended up with more grey hair.
From now on I'm going to take my own weekly backups and keep them at home.
