I swim several times a week at the university pool. There are always several swimming classes going on. This past week I've had TWO comments from mommies with older boys (between 8 - 10, I'd guess) about how I could change in private - I assume to protect their near pubescent boy from 30 seconds of my horrible nakedness as I change in and out of my swim suit.

The pool has a family change room for just this reason! It's not like there isn't another option available if you absolutely need to be with your son as he changes. But I am not scurrying off to change in the one of the two tiny (wet!) private showers/change rooms because you dragged your far-too-old-to-be-there boy into the women's change room! :furious:

I don't actually care that your son is in there. You're comfortable with it, fine. But at a pool, in a change room, you've got to be prepared to see people changing. The next mom who gives me static is getting an earful because I've just about had it...

Rant over...

IMO you should have given the first two moms an earful. If they're going to bring their boys in there.....

It's a changing room... why wouldn't you change in there? Ridiculous! If they're all about modesty, you'd think they'd use the family change room or at least mind their own business.

That's why at my gym, there's a note posted about opposite sex children over the age of 4 not allowed in the locker room. They are suppsoed to use the family cahning room/bathroom that's in the nursery area.

If anyone else complains, point out that they are the ones breaking the rules and that you will be happy to report them if need be!

I wouldn't give anyone an earful, but I would point the family changing room out to them.

Where were all these mommies when I was a youngster?

My Female Anatomy 101 educational opportunities were sparse. Fortunately, Sears, etc. used to put out lovely Wish Books around the holidays, and certain National Geographic magazines were available in a pinch (provided you carefully avoided the ever-watchful eye of Mrs. Limburger, the school librarian).

Ours has a sign saying NO children of the opposite sex allowed in the changing room over 4 years old!!!! Even to get into the pool area if your kid is over 4 years old they have to enter through their own sexes locker room, you can not bring your 5 year old male through the female locker room to get into the pool area.

Ember- I think that your last sentence is exactly what you should tell the next mom whose preteen boy needs to be present in the ladies changing room. No need to give an earful, just let her know that if her boy is in the room she better be prepared to deal with the consequences.

I wouldn't expect boys that age to be in there, but it really wouldn't apply to me, I don't change in front of anyone, and I have never been in a gym where people do. They use bathrooms or changing rooms with doors or curtains.

I get the same thing about people who don't wanted see nursing in a nursery...

Sent from me.

Oh don't get me started on that one. I will get banned from disboard lol.

Op my answer to first mom would have been " I'm sorry I though I was in the woman's changing room, they have family room over there." Smile sweetly and ignore said retarded woman. And depending on my mood and time requirement for the day I might just take my sweet time getting dresses. But then I'm a brat.

:thumbsup2

When DD was taking lessons, I was THAT mom. You know, the one who complained when she saw a boy classmate in the female locker room. She was in 3rd grade, I think, and was absolutely mortified he was there. There were 2 family changing rooms, the other parents just didn't want to bother. After I (nicely) brought it up with the new swim director, signs were re-posted everywhere and enforced. Too many people thought they were special and the rules didn't apply to them.

Just tell them to use the MENS changing room, that way the boychild will not be exposed to the horrific and life changing trauma of seeing nekkid women!:thumbsup2

If you see them again, make sure to stay naked while you dry your hair and put on your makeup.

I'd check to see what the policy is on the age of children being allowed in the opposite sex's change rooms. Then, you're armed with that information the next time a clueless sanctimommy makes a comment.

"I could change in private or you could follow the rules that state opposite sex children over the age of X aren't allowed in here. Have a nice day!"

Right? So not fair. Other than books I didn't get to learn about female anatomy until high school, even then it was mostly from books. :rotfl2: College on the other hand.... :scratchin :offtopic:

IMHO a 10 year old is way to old to be in the opposite sexes changing room, even 8 is pushing it.

I have never been in a gym locker room where the women didn't change in front of the lockers.

In the nearest gym, the lockers are in U shapes with benches in front of them. Women are in various states of undress all the time.

In all they gyms and pools I have been in, it is considered extremely bad manners to use one of the private showers or a bathroom stall to change as there are not that many of them and they are not meant as changing rooms.

If some mommy asked me to go elsewhere to change, I might be inclined to turn to expose a full frontal view and comment that the sign out front says "Women's locker room" not "Helicopter Mommy and adolescent son" locker room. However, in reality, I would just point out the family changing room as I would not want to embarrass the boy. He is probably embarrassed enough being in the locker room and doesn't need it rubbed in that his mom is a nutcase.

I am of the mind that I don't give a darn if you bring your prepubescent male in the changing room, but since it is your choice, you will have to deal with the consequences. Little overprotected Johnny may just catch a glimpse of those private parts. I will not change my habits since they are what the changing room is designed for to accommodate your paranoia. (General "You" of course.)

Perhaps you should do a little shimmy and jiggle your northern lady parts at them.....for educational purposes. I invoke:

YOUR BIG BOY

YOUR STALL

Good heavens, when I here stories like this I always cringe. I'm not a terribly modest person, so I always change in front of my locker when I'm at the Y, so I would be very annoyed if there was a 8 year old boy standing there near me. If mommy doesn't mind, that's her weird issue, but I don't want some kid 10 feet away when I'm butt naked, drying off!

I would never have brought my son in the ladies locker room at that age. I just don't get these people who do these things. I mean, do you walk around naked at home in front of your boys? :confused3
