"I've Got Some Bad News and Some Worse News!" 11/14 Last chap!

I bow down to the ghetto-greatness of the Booger! I drive a mini-booger -- it's even about the same color. But nowhere near Booger status.

:rotfl2::rotfl2:"Mini-Booger".....I love it!! I drive one too...same color (in fact, it is at this moment getting new tires for the second time in less than two years because the dealer failed to realign the front end when he fixed the rack and pinion and steel was coming through my tires...but I digress!!!)! Most important, I now know what to call the piece of $@#%! [junk] that I drive!!! Mine has only been as far as Nebraska, so no, it also has not attained BOOGER status!!:rotfl2:

Dawn,
Love the ring! My mothers engagement ring was a saphire as well and square cut. She never wore so it's like brand new! I always LOVED that ring and before she passed away she gave it to me. I wear it very seldom but I love it I wore it on my wedding day for something blue. :goodvibes

Day 1 Part Deux:

After being filled in da belly with faux food we did head back on the highway. We decided to continue our road trip via our pit stop for another 20 miles versus doubling back to get on the freeway faster. I hate what seems to be a faster way in exchange for more miles when driving gas hogs. :headache:

This brought us through a quaint town called Fairbault and it was having the ever popular summer fair. Now remember that Leah and Carsyn were in the lead and that they were driving a very "hick" as the locals would say, truck with women emblems blazing.

Leah, in her effervescent persona and love of all things fun and go with the moment mentality, decided this would be the perfect opportunity to honk the horn at some boys she decided were rather cute. Honk and wave and do the whoo hooo scream of mating baboons around the world.

Or young women who just saw a hot guy. :3dglasses

Pretty much the same thing!

They turned and stared and Carsyn explained that she was laughing so hard she thought she might pass out.

You see being in Treyner's Jeep and riding along just before, Leah had donned a hat and was wearing like a gangsta. She had also pushed some of he hair back in it so she looked more like a guy since they had been laughing at the two of them driving a very male vehicle.

Well all that had happened and then immediately they came upon the Fairbault Hottie squad and all the boys did was turn and stare. :confused3

It seems they did not return the baboon love calls or even wave. :wave2:

Leah was perplexed by this because the least they could have done was acknowledge that someone was admiring them. I mean what kind of men were they raising in this locale?

That was when Carsyn, through heaving breaths as she was laughing, explained what Leah was completely missing. :teacher:

They were not rude. :snooty:

They were not mean. pirate:

They were not deaf baboons who simply missed the signals.

They just were not used to getting cat calls from a blond Justin Bieber.

So Leah was laughing at the moment as well and relieved she had not already lost her "it" factor at the county line!! :lmao:

The ride into Iowa was uneventful and soon we were at our exit to head over east. Kizzy was not to excited about the drive. She did not seem all that impressed with the potential corn and soy bean crop this year.

DSCF6992.jpg

What I was excited about was the fact we would be driving past a little town called Floyd, Iowa. Not because I really care less about Floyd exactly but I do care very much about a house in Floyd.

I have toured the house twice when it was last on the market and someday will own it. Not because I would love to live in Iowa at all. Simply for the house.

DSCF6952.jpg

DSCF6949.jpg

You see that house was built in the 1800's of limestone and looks like an English countryside estate. The first time I past it I doubled back so I could make sure it was not an oasis. That I actually saw such a magnificent structure in the middle of nowhere. :worship:

The best part is that the house has a story behind it. A tale of love and loss and tragic circumstances. A place where I could run a B&B in the fall for pheasant hunters, or simply a retreat to a small hobby farm. It is my absolute favorite house I have ever seen or been in.

Here is a bit of background on my dream house:

In the late 1800's, A man from England who came from a wealthy family, was the second of boys. It was custom at that point to have the oldest some follow in the family business and the second son head to America to extend the family money and wealth in the new, undeveloped areas.

This man did make it rich on his own accord once in America and finally settled his life and business ventures in Floyd, Iowa. He visited England often to let his family know of his success and also to court his fiance whom he intended on marrying once his house was built to satisfaction to honor her.

He built the house in the style of an English countryside estate so she would not get homesick, complete with gardens and a creek running through the back woods. He sent for his intended after the homes west half was complete since the design of the home meant that the two halves were matching and once the outside was done, the second half could wait until the next year for completion.

Well his bride to be came over on a ship from England and in those days it took several weeks to arrive in New York.

A long time at sea with handsome suitors all to happy to claim the love of a beautiful woman as herself.

(Yes, I know this smacks of Titanic but I swear on my life that I have read the newspaper articles about the house history on the real estate website when it was for sale and now, I can't find anything on line anywhere. They were old papers obviously and were scanned so maybe I can get a hold of the real estate company and they can send me them so I can print them here.)

So in the two week journey, his future wife, woman he worked so hard to impress, fell in love with a different man and when she arrived in NYC, she simply stayed. She never sent word ahead that she was not arriving in Floyd so this poor man, waited and waited and had the house living room, bedroom, kitchen and finished in her color palette and design scheme.

Eventually he heard through his family who had been in touch with her family back in England, of the news of her change of heart.

The man was devastated and lived in that unfinished home (the right side facing the house is the west side) for a few years before hanging himself in the rafters of the unfinished left side attic.

He never got over the love of his life or the guilt he felt in making her wait for his success when she had said that was not important to her while he lived without her in America for so many years.

The home has the most amazing kitchen. It is open to the second floor vaulted ceiling and there is a small passageway upstairs by the bathroom, that gives you a window into the kitchen.

There is only 3 bedrooms in the house as well as a second family room downstairs. The walls are so thick that the cooling in the summer is not an issue or heating in the winter. Tin pressed ceilings in the formal living room and kitchen and a huge portion of the front yard is under a contract by the state of Iowa to keep it a native wild flower prairie and thus they get paid money for that land and get the viewing pleasure of it's reward.

We passed the house that night and I noticed that they had done some renovating on the outside. Brick lantern columns were now at the driveway entry and more landscape on the outside. I am not sure if the owners did ever sell the house or if they never got their asking price and just decided to keep it.

We turned around and parked on the outskirts of their driveway and Leah who is brave and could care less if she looks silly, jumped out of the Jeep and ran all Secret Service like, through the pine trees that serve as a blockade from the highway, in the front yard, to get those photos.

I imagine my children and grandchildren someday playing football & soccer in the open grass in front of the house. There is already a neat outdoor grill, original to the house here and I would love to add an outdoor living area where we could have a traditional Italian brick, pizza stove.

Someday, someday!

From there it was only another 20 minutes before we saw our next turn off.

DSCF6960.jpg

We would be in the hotel before 10 p.m.for sure!!! :cool1:

The one thing that perplexed me on this stretch of interstate was how many museum signs we saw for the landmarks that make Iowa famous.

I actually was chuckling at the amount of museums because it seems if you have nothing to draw people to your town esthetically, you can just shove together a museum and people will come.

You have:

Museum of the Religious Arts

National Farm Toy Museum

Family Museum of Arts and Science

Mississippi River Museum

Davenport Museum of Art now known as Figge Art Museum (so you don't miss out)

I think I should just stop here but I know I have only dusted off the surface of the quantity of signs I saw along the road from my spot in the back of the Booger!!

We made it to Dan with only one minor glitch. Treyner the last hour was in the lead since he had the GPS. The problem was his GPS does not show you the turn when a road splits until the last second and he hates listening to the women telling him where and how to go, :rotfl2: so he turns off the volume. This meant we missed our turn once and then had to go about 10 miles farther to get back to where we wanted to be.

I told him the point of having a GOS is to have someone tell you when and where to turn. If it just showing you the road ahead and not much help of which turn to take until it is too late...

It is called a Map! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

We finally pulled into Coralville to rest our bones and get some sleep. We were worried about sneaking Kizzy in the room so Baylor put her in his pillowcase and told her to stay covert until the coast was clear! :cool2:

Dan had told me what room number he was in so the 5 of us plus an incognito dog, walked in like we knew what we were doing. I knew Dan had a second floor room, so we got on the elevator. :thumbsup2

Then we looked like a bunch of idiots to see once the door had closed, that the 2nd floor room, was actually on the first floor, since we were on a hill. So we simply pushed the "door open," button, and walked back out, past the front desk, trying to muffle giggles and proceeded down the hallway to Dan. All the while Baylor trying to shove Kizzy in his pillow case like a Jack in the Box as she was very curious where she was heading and knew a pillowcase was not her usual mode of transportation!

It was great to see Dan and everybody ate soon because he was nice enough to have ordered pizza ahead of time. Then we crashed. Ready for the long haul to Knoxville in the morning!

Oh Dawn! That house! yes a brick oven and somewhere grow grapes on an awesome trellis.......beautiful!
And if you turn it into a bed and brekkie, then you can have all the museum pamplets on a nice laced table somewhere......bwahahahahaha

Hysterical at the Justin Bieber look a like! Beautiful story on that house - it's gorgeous!
Glad you all made it to meet up with Dan safely (despite Treyner's reluctance to listen to the lovely GPS voice).
Who knew there were that many museums in Iowa? I can understand the Farm Toy museum...

Beautiful house. Sad story. Wonder if his ghost "hangs" around. Men and directions. Hahahahahahaha.Learning young isn't he.

OK, I just finished reading back over this TR. Your talk of Dan reminds me of my niece's wedding this weekend. My niece and new nephew have dated for over 10 years. The groom and best man are both into comic books. The best man's toast was very heartfelt and thought out. He spoke of Superman & Lois Lane meeting in 1938 and not marrying until 1996.:) He also mentioned Peter Parker always having MaryJane on his mind no matter what Spiderman was doing. My new nephew loves my niece just that much.:lovestruc The toast really touched us and made us realize that good things do happen to good people.

Congratulations to you and Dan.

Dawn, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I love the ring!!! I'm a huge fan of sapphires (well, anything blue, really) and have some small ones lining the band of my ring. Cool future home in Iowa too! :thumbsup2

:rotfl2::rotfl2:"Mini-Booger".....I love it!! I drive one too...same color. Most important, I now know what to call the piece of $@#%! [junk] that I drive!!! Maybe we can get bumper stickers that say.."I'm a Booger, You're a Booger, Wouldn't you like to drive a Booger too?" :lmao: Mine has only been as far as Nebraska, so no, it also has not attained BOOGER status!!:rotfl2:
Nebraska? Where at? Dan is from Nebraska and I went to college there and it is usally not a , "Hey...let's take a road trip kids!!! How bout Nebraska!!!" - type of place.:confused3

Dawn,
Love the ring! My mothers engagement ring was a saphire as well and square cut. She never wore so it's like brand new! I always LOVED that ring and before she passed away she gave it to me. I wear it very seldom but I love it I wore it on my wedding day for something blue. :goodvibes
I would love to see a picture of it!!!

A mini winery sounds fab...the museum lit...not so much! :rotfl:
Hysterical at the Justin Bieber look a like! It was really a funny story when Carsyn shared and then I found that Leah had taken the pic so I was so glad I had visual evidence for you all!!
Who knew there were that many museums in Iowa? I can understand the Farm Toy museum...
These are ONLY eastern Iowa! I swear I kept seeing them for every exit!!!
Beautiful house. Sad story. Wonder if his ghost "hangs" around.
I have not heard any tales of it but who knows! :sad2:
Hey, Dawn, it's actually called the "Bob Campbell Geology Museum"!!:snooty:
Now, that makes it more sophisticated!:rotfl:
This Anderson Museum is in Iowa!!! I assume the one you are referring to is in SC.

I agree though, throw more words into your title and you sound legit!!:thumbsup2:rotfl2:]

OK, I just finished reading back over this TR. Your talk of Dan reminds me of my niece's wedding this weekend.
That was such a good story and the fact it was personal to them was so neat!!!!
I'm a huge fan of sapphires (well, anything blue, really) and have some small ones lining the band of my ring. Ohhhhh...take a pic and post it!!! Cool future home in Iowa too! :thumbsup2
Yes it is! Only thing is the owners do not know it yet!!! :lmao:

Minnesota ~ home of 1000 lakes...

Iowa ~ home of 1000 different museums... :rotfl2:

OMG, she really does look like Justin Beiber!!! :scared1:

Justin was in the area about a month ago for a concert and got kicked out of Wal-Mart for riding a bike thru the store... Not a good role model... :sad2:

And I'm loving the wedding ring!!! Very nice!!! :cool2:

Day 2:

DSCF6974.jpg

The alarm was set for 5:30 a.m. so we would be on the road by 6:30 a.m. Leah had set her own alarm and was up in the shower before anyone else. She is such a smart girl because then she would have a towel for sure and no issue waiting for slower movers like...ahemmm...Carsyn...wheez!

DSCF6973.jpg

Yes this is Carsyn even after being stripped of covers and holding onto Leah's blanket for dear life in hopes of a few more minutes of zzzzz's!

I honestly do not recall the order of everyone showered that morning or not besides the fact I know I got in after Leah and Carsyn was last!

We all ate the breakfast buffet in the lobby and the fresh fruit was amazing! We grabbed an apple and a yogurt each for later in the morning and put them in the cooler so they would be nice and cold! It was already a bazillion degrees outside and it was promising to be a sticky day!

Dan packed his Mustang that was going to be left at the hotel since he was again working in Iowa upon our return, sorted through what he wanted to take with us besides what I had packed for him and then we were in search of gasoline! It was about then I started to understand just how bad the gas mileage on the Booger hauling that U-haul was going to be. We had gestimated about 12 miles to the gallon but we were getting closer to 8! :scared1:

We got as far as the gas station when we got a call that routed us to stop at a local grocery store and fax some stuff back home. Someone was interested in buying the van that did not fit us and Dan needed to get papers signed and transmitted. Glad the van was going to be gone but frustrated it was all happening now when we needed time on the road because we were supposed to be in Knoxville by 6 p.m. at the latest!

This little side venture cost us an hour between the sending and receiving of the title etc...so our time to leave was pushed back once again!

Then we were Illinois and Indiana bound!

If you all remember the trip last Christmas when it seemed that we were never going to get to Knoxville....well this was the same route and we were in the same tunnel of time suckage.

We passed Normal, Indiana and the non bakery, cake bakery and I felt dejavu like! We were heading east, into winds and we could not get anywhere we wanted to go! Top speed was 65 with that trailer and we felt like we were standing still. I called Shannon several times to let her know our locale and it was beyond frustrating knowing what GPS and Mapquest had said for arrival time and it kept getting further away from us.

Treyner and Baylor drove the jeep BTW while we had the girls and it was so nice with these young women! Movie watching, giggling and laughing and no loud boy stuff!

We did pass the boys several times or they would pass us and signals and signs were given between the vehicles. Most totally not appropriate but enough to make you laugh on the highway to hell.

Ohhhh...did I forget to mention that Treyner's Jeep does not have air conditioning? :confused3 One of those things he did not get around to fixing that I know he wishes he would have at that point! It was not so bad they said as long as they were moving but when we hit summer road construction which was often, they were baked salmon in that car! :beach:

Usually the signs were us pretending to shiver as they were sweltering beside us! :cold:

We called ahead to Treyner and asked him to GPS a grocery store for us! We wanted to get more water to drink and a bathroom stop. He found one a few miles up the road and when we got out of the car, a few things surprised us!

#1 The fact that southern accents were in Indiana.

#2 It was so hot and humid out that I felt like it was the hottest day I had ever been in Florida.

You see, although the heat wave breaking across the south was known by us a tad bit, we had been AWOL from media the week before up at Burn Camp so I do not think it was fully fathomed until that moment.

Dan was sweating as soon as he breathed in the air and Treyner told him he did not want to hear him complain! :lmao: Dan then reminded Treyner that he had offered to fix his air conditioning unit with him and the fact he had not done it was not his fault! :snooty:

Inside we decided to also get some deli sandwiches they had on sale because again, the thought of unpacking the cooler with all the suitcases on it was not high on my list in the blazing inferno.

Back at the cars, the boys were having fun with the girls throwing water on each other and running around the vehicles! I don't care how hot it is, if there is trouble and energy to be run off, you can find my boys! The people driving passed I am sure was wondering what classy kids were part of the Booger Posse! We had parked in the back of the lot so they were not in anyone's way but none the less, a sight I am sure to see!

Back in the van we went and that was when the boys, decided they needed to go to the restroom while the girls and I had gone in the grocery store! So they stopped at a local fast food chain and said they were running in and that they would also be getting some pop and we asked them to get some glasses of ice since ours was melting faster than a demon in an exorcism!

Well they went in, then they never came out. We waited and waited and waited.

Then, we saw them creep around the back of the building in the drive through lane.

Honestly. Are you serious that they went in to use the facilities and then went through the drive through for drinks?

Sure enough they did and 20 minutes later, they pulled up to our van and handed over 4 glasses of ice water.

Treyner explained that he would have felt stupid getting in line for 2 soft drinks and 4 glasses of ice water. :sad2:

I just sat there thinking that I had raised an idiot. :teacher:

I mean last time I checked there was not a secret drive through box that separated the front cashiers from the drive through cashier! So if you were going to feel stupid in line, how exactly does the stupid factor disappear in the drive through? I did not know of this force field he spoke of and was I intently curious. :confused3

It never was explained but remembering back to the fear of looking stupid a young adult/teen might have, I am betting to money on the table that it was about a hot girl. That he looked like a water boy with a half wet shirt and shorts from his water fight in the parking lot 10 minutes before and he decided sitting down in his truck, would help his cool factor.

They have yet to confirm or deny! Baylor is not one to give up secrets of the brotherhood either!

So then we were on the way again. This is possibly as boring of a drive as it is through Nebraska until you hit Colorado!

The only exciting things even Leah could find to entertain the camera with:

DSCF7021.jpg

We were getting closer to dark and after watching Princess & the Frog which Leah had not seen and a few other movies, it was time for gas again and a stretch!!

I had called Shannon to let her know that we would not be getting to Knoxville until after 11 p.m. so I felt it was not the best idea to stop. Originally Sam and her kids were not going to be there but Sam had gotten in later than he expected from his business trip so was not leaving for his parents home until the next morning. This put 3 more people in her home plus her Aunt Caroline was there also with a grandson.

Too late to stop and we did not want to put them out by shoving us in with them so it was decided that we would just drive on through the night.

Treyner was at this point excited to get to his apartment and so at the gas station we were at, we decided we would let him drive ahead of us and we would all meet up in Anderson in the morning. There was no sense anymore of us staying all together because we were so much slower than him.

I could not believe we would be 4 hours behind our original arrival time for getting to Knoxville again!!! :headache: Driving into the wind was a killer! I was also so sad not to see Shannon and her family!

So we got gas and then I said I would make food for anyone hungry.

I asked Treyner to get the cooler accessible while I washed my hands. Now remember, the 2 times I had planned on getting into the cooler we had decided to get McD's and deli sandwiches.

I arrived back at the Booger and heard:

"The food is all hot."

"Is it not working? What do you mean it is hot?"

"I mean like the food is hot to the touch."

"Well how hot can it be if it is not working? Didn't you check it before we left?"

"I mean it is friggin hot like boiling."

So I went around and put my hand into an oven! :scared1:

You see Treyner had plugged in the cooler when we were leaving so once I knew it had for sure been plugged in, I did not worry about it again. I then reminded him that it was both a hot and cold cooler and asked him if he made sure it was set on cold when he plugged it in.

He said he had never used it before so he had no idea how it was set. He just had plugged it in. Truth was, I also had not used it before. Dan was the one when we bought it, had plugged it in to see if it worked and it had not been touched since.

Just then Dan came out of the station and I asked him how to work the cooler. :sad2:

He came over and explained that the cord into the cooler had two sides. One red and one blue. If the blue side was up, the cooler would cool. If the red side was up, it would keep things hot.

Oh sweet baby Jesus.

The red side was up.

We had been properly cooking lunch meat, bread, yogurt, apples, cheese, ketchup, mayo, mustard and an assortment of other things the whole freakin time. Since MN! Minus the little bit it was not working at the hotel in Iowa.

So we now had boiled ham, cheese perfect for nachos etc!

I am not kidding that the blocks of cheese I had bought were liquid within the bag it was sealed in!!

So I began to toss food like a hot potato into the garbage can near the van! I wish I would have taken a picture! The look I was getting from random gas pumper people was hysterical. I am sure I looked like a loon, swearing as I was burning myself, throwing hot ketchup, bread , meat etc., from a cooler into the trash. No one would have known the stuff was boiling except us because why would a friggin cooler in the 100 degree temps, be put on hot????!!!

The good news was I had not done my normal pre-baking/cooking routine so there was probably only $50 in stuff chucked. For once even though something went wrong, it also went right.

It was actually a funny moment and so typical of us that I had to call a few friends to tell them what a bunch of morons we were and the funny tale!

So with that we went on, nobody was starving anymore and the boys went ahead and we plugged along down the road. Drove past Knoxville and waved towards Shannon, :wave2: and kept on going through the new road that they had reopened that would cut off our previous drives to Anderson by over an hour!

Treyner had called saying he was only a half hour from Anderson and we were still in NC. His friends were waiting up for his arrival and we told him we were going to sleep for a few hours. It was nearing 3 a.m. and we needed a bit of sleep to make it! So Dan and I found a rest stop in the mountains and pulled in, went to the rest room and hit some sleep. I had slept a lot in the night while he was driving so I planned on sleeping a few more hours and then getting up to drive! We could be in Anderson by 8 a.m. and unpack while still cool out and get our hinnies on the road to Charleston!!! :dance3:

Ok, I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but the cooler on hot has me laughing here at work and my coworkers giving me hilarious looks!

Love the ring, btw! I finally saw the pic yesterday morning.

for some reason, I totally didn't find this trip report until today, going back to read and catch up - work is dull today, raining, definitely need something to jump start me.:surfweb:

No it was funny. Just not until after I was scalding myself! I was giggling writing about it actually. I blame Dan for not being there to oversee the packing! :snooty:

Dan was the one who after it was all thrown, said we could have made the best out of it and bought tortilla chips and had nachos!

I think the death stare I gave him caused him to stop his Pollyanna outlook on life! :lmao:

Love the ring, btw! I finally saw the pic yesterday morning.

Thanks!!!

Well, two more great episodes under my belt. :cool1:

Love the house story - so sad. Really sad.

Love the pictures of Kizzy. Poor Kizzy as the pillow case hostage.

Oh My - the cooler story is hysterical. I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time, but at least you know that baby will keep things real hot in the winter months!

Glad you are going to make it to Anderson by morning. You guys really are the expert long haul drivers.

Nebraska? Where at? Dan is from Nebraska and I went to college there and it is usally not a , "Hey...let's take a road trip kids!!! How bout Nebraska!!!" - type of place.:confused3
:rotfl2:I know, I know, not exactly Vacation Capital USA!!! The "Mini-Booger" ventured as far as, wait for it.....Newport, Nebraska (population less than 100)....out in the middle of the state. Why? My dad grew up on a cattle ranch out in them there sandhills! Also, my parents have left the glorious state of Iowa to return to my mom's hometown (a small town outside of Omaha), so the Mini-Booger could someday return, if it doesn't fall apart before then!
Where did you go to college? My parents met at Wayne State Teachers College (I think it's called something else now). And where is Dan from?

Dan grew up in Aurora, NE but lived in Omaha and surrounding areas a long time.

Wayne State is still around but now has other things besides teaching.

I went to school outside of Omaha in Blair, NE at Dana College which just shut down their doors this July! :sad1:
