I've been a WDW girl all my life and this Thanksgiving we might go to Disneyland. What are the most noticeable things that are different at Disneyland and WDW? Is there anything I should know about the parks? Any help would be really appreciated.
TIA!:)

Read Hydro's tips that are stickies at the top here. They are very good, lots of information, explains differences from WDW to DL, etc. Take the time and open the links he has posted too.

We are going to DL for the first time in a little over a month so I'm not much help!

phew...where to start? definitely check out Hydroguys tips as 4Ollies said. You might also want to look at the first few pages of threads because this has been asked kind of recently. Of course, I've never even been to WDW but I'm sure others will post and help out more. Of course, the more info you collect, the more specific your questions will get, which helps! :) Good luck!

I love WDW for the fact there are water parks, disney lodging, that keeps the magic alive through out your stay, land activities like miniture golf, dinner shows like Hoop-de-doo. The "sidewalks" are wider at WDW. WdW has epcot, AK, and MGM. These parks do hold some of the same rides that are at CA/DL but having 4 parks and other daily activities it spreads the ppl out so it seems no so packed as with DL. Epcot is my favorite park from both coasts. Honestly, I do think WDW is a step above in service as compared to DL. Maybe it is the college program that has lots of college students working there I am not sure why it is just my observation. (One bad thing is the weather in summer as you know)

Now, DL is more compact but has most of the rides avaiable at WDW Just over 2 parks not 4. No Disney water parks :(. You do not have to ride transportation to get fron one park to the other.

You will love Indianna ride, at DL and please please take the time to see the alladin show at CA. There are no bad seats and the show is a must see. I prefer DL for a 4 day trip. I can see a heck of a lot of stuff in that time, where as at WDW a 10 day trip is not near enough time. The weather is in summer can be very hot but not the swealtering humitity that is centeral florida. You will enjoy DL/CA. Taking a change every now and then is nice.

We are also WDW fanatics, and just had our first trip to DLR last week. It was wonderful, and I would love to go back sometime, but will still go to WDW more often. Many of the rides that WDW also has do seem better at DLR (more intense--such as Space and Big Thunder Mountain). However, DL was way more unorganized than WDW. Example--during the fireworks, at DL they make everyone not standing still in the roped off area walk one way, which is good in theory. But we had to walk through Tomorrowland and Fantasyland to get to the front of the castle (for some reason the short cut through Fantasyland was blocked off). We were trying to get to Adventureland. We finally made it to Frontierland, and a cast member told us to keep going to the next little street for Adventureland (said it would be quicker than walking through Frontierland due to Fantasmic, etc...). However, when we got to the little turn off for Adventureland, the cast members there would not let us through, saying it was one way, for people exiting that land only. We were soooo frustrated and tired by this point. I told those cast members what the first one had said. One said "I understand that, but you can't go this way. You must walk back around. This is one way only." So we walked back around again. By this time, it was the end of the fireworks, and a madhouse of everyone moving at the same time. Also, we were taking a monorail from DTD to DL. Had to wait 25 minutes for another one to come. For some reason, they must have just had one working. Either that, or it is always that slow. Better off to have walked it. Food choices are not nearly as good at DLR. But a positive is, there are a few places across the street out of the parks, such as McDonald's and Mimi's (which was wonderful!!). I am not trying to discourage you at all. I just want you to be prepared. And last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, it was extremely crowded. But using Fast Passes and child swap saved us. Like I said, it was a great trip:thumbsup2 , and I definitely want to go back again. WDW just seems so much easier and better organized. (less walking as well by staying at WDW property and riding the shuttles). Of course, much of this could be that we just know WDW so well that it feels like second nature. I am sure that DLR vets feel the same about it there.

We have the opposite situation. I have been a disneyland girl all of my life and couldnt count the times that we went and now in September we are going to WDW for the first time and I couldnt believe how much more there is at WDW and looking forward to it.

Size. WDW is HUGE! DLR is quite human-sized. Since you are going during the Thanksgiving holidays, I won't tell you that you can do it in 2 days since it will be very crowded when you are here and there will be gosh awful lines. Enjoy. Its different but it will shock you how much they pack into a small space.

You need to be warned--every WDW regular who went to DL has always said, Wow, the castle is tiny! Yes, it's much smaller than at WDW.

I'm a DL fan, I found WDW hugely overwhelming, so you might find the whole thing too small for you. I really enjoy being able to *walk* between the parks, with no wait for buses. I love the compactness of the resort. (If you can really call it compact!) While Saratoga Springs was beautiful, I felt that the DL hotels had better, more "magical" theming.

As for rides, well, I'm guessing that Hydroguy's guide will say it better than I can.

Check the sticky threads at the top of this board, there is a DLR guide for WDW vets. Very helpful.

I grew up with DL (before it was ever DLR) and now live in FL...so guess where I spend more of my time? THough my    will always be with DL!

Just some of the cool things about DL:

-much much much less walking
-the history of course
-you can walk behind thunder mtn right into Fantasyland
-canoes and Mr. Toad!
-Space Mtn is much better
-Pirates is a trillion zillion billion times better and longer.
-Blue Bayou
-Indiana Jones
-New Orleans Square
-Matterhorn and Nemo!

thank you all. i am definitely going to check out the sticky, now that i don't have any finals to study for. and have more specific questions probably.

we might be going with my sister's high school band because they were invited out there to perform in a parade. i don't know how much time they will get at the parks but how much can we get done in a day or two during thanksgiving? thats the main thing we are worried about, how much time it will take to try to get all the best things done.

thanks again!

As you are going during a very busy time and for a short time, I would suggest looking into Ridemax, so you can make the most of your time at DLR and see as much as possible.

what's ridemax? and i am hoping to be there for about 3 days maybe 4.
www.ridemax.com - it is software which will create custom itineraries for you. Costs about $15. It can be especially helpful to a first timer. Their WDW version helped me a lot on my first trip to WDW even though I never strictly followed any of the itineraries. It gives you a feel for the flow of a park and popularity of rides.

For example, since DL has more headliner rides than MK, the BTMRR is not a top headliner but more of a second level headliner. Lines are much shorter at DL for BTMRR and FPs are much easier to get. RideMax helps you understand this - especially during a busy time like Thanksgiving week.

Being a DL guy all my life and a WDW guy during the latter half of my life - I have seen and experienced a lot of the differences and similarities between the two. WDW is a wonderful experience - but it should not be forgotten that without DL there would not BE a WDW. First and foremost, DL was Walt's park. While he certainly was the major force for an eastern expansion / sister park - he never set foot inside the MK at WDW - only walked the ground where things would someday be built. He slept, ate in and very much enjoyed DL.

One of the major comparisons between the two resorts, of course, comes in the overall size. DL itself is just a couple hundred acres, while the entire resort today is about 500 +/-. WDW is over 27,000 - or equivalent to the entire city of San Francisco, or twice the size of Manhattan. Everything is quite spread out, and getitng around takes quite a while on buses, monorails or boats. Not so at DL - everything is within walking distance.

DL set the precedent for how all of the eventual Disney parks would be. DL has a much higher ride/attraction count in that single park than any of the WDW parks - and it's a much smaller park, too. The walkways are smaller and more crowded - but the intimacy can be a great thing - except for the most crowded days/times. Yes the castle is smaller - but the smaller castle also feels less imposing. It's been said that the ancient European castles were built large and imposing as a means of intimidating the peasants - that's kind of what WDW's feels like...Sleeping Beauty Castle at DL does not feel that way all - it feels much more friendly and enjoyable.

At DL POTC is about twice as long as at WDW (and actually much better), and the HM is different too - the stretching gallery is an actual elevator taking guests down to a basement level in order to move them underneath the train berm and out to the show building. Indiana Jones, POTC, HM and Mickey's Toontown are all located outside or beyond the berm - even though their entrances are inside the berm.

The DL hotel is a classic experience - but nothing like the hotels at WDW. It was originally built in the late '50's - and became a Disney property in the '80's by acquisition, it was originally built and operated by the Wrather Corporation - and unfortnately, despite multiple renovations, shows it's age constantly. The Paradise Pier hotel is a Disney hotel by acquisition - it was originally built by others as well. Only the Grand Californian is a Disney built hotel...its' lobby rivals that of the Wilderness Lodge - it's gorgeous.

There are numerous rides and experiences that remain unique to DL that you should check out - Alice In Wonderland, Indiana Jones, the Matterhorn, Pinocchio's Daring Journey, New Orleans Square, Finding Nemo Subs, The First 50 Years film in the Opera House on MS, Storybook Land boats, Roger Rabbit's CarToon Spin, Big Thunder Ranch, Primeval World diorama on the railroad, Mr. Toad, Tarzan's Treehouse (similar to the original Swiss Family but somewhat different), the Parade of Dreams, and of course those awesome Remember fireworks - which far out distance WDW's Wishes.

It's an awesome experience! I hope you enjoy it.

Thanksgiving is an extremely BUSY time at DL. Expect herds and herds of people the day after. It is one of the busiest times in the park.
