It's Tony Time!!!

Really? They perform live 8 performances a week, but for the Tony Awards, in front of their peers, they lip synced? :confused3

NPH made a point of saying Broadway performers sing live 8 shows a week, so I found it puzzling that the Phantom scene appeared to be lip synced.

Okay, dumb question, does Broadway close down for the Tonys'? Or do understudy put on the show

Like others said, most shows don't have Sunday evening performances so they didn't have to worry about closing for the night, at least for the most part.

A lot of the shows did have matinees yesterday. I was looking at the TKTS app on my phone yesterday morning, and saw Kinky Boots, Pippin, Annie, and Vanya-Sonya-Masha & Spike listed with tickets available, amongst others.

Matinees will play with understudies on Tony day if the leads are performing that night, but not always. Depends on the performer.

LOVED the show last night. NPH is amazing. I was rooting for Matilda to win Best Musical, but Kinky Boots looks great so I was happy for them too.

The Tonys are actually a lot more fun when all of the shows pick up awards instead of one show dominating all of the awards. :thumbsup2

Actually, in general, they don't. It's a big thing for everyone to perform their matinee and then get ready for the awards that night. There are rarely understudies on on Tony day (for the shows that are nominated). It's "tradition."

Is it just me? I think parents should let their kids be just KIDS. They have plenty of time to be professional actors/dancers/singers LATER.

Most shows usually cast multiple kids so they can alternate performances and get days off. Matilda has 4 girls alternating in the title role, and I think they have two groups of kids playing the classmates. Disney had 3 Janes and 3 Michaels in Mary Poppins, there are multiple Simbas/Nalas in Lion King, and 2 boys playing Les in Newsies. Motown has 2 boys alternating as Michael Jackson/Stevie Wonder.

Les Miz also had 5 kids in their cast - 3 girls to alternate as little Cosette/Eponine, and 2 boys to alternate as Gavroche (one of the girls also covered Gavroche if the two boys couldn't go on).

Christmas Story only had one boy playing Ralphie, but it was a limited run.

I think Annie's the only show left that still only casts one kid as Annie, which at this point is crazy. Shows with kids obviously need kids to play them, but having them do all 8 shows just seems like too much.

Cool! Maybe it's just some shows in the late 90s I remember being a big absentee day on Tony day...

Apparently, CBS Atlanta cut the awards off seven minutes early, and had to re-air it several times today.

::yes:: and I was one that CBS Atlanta heard from! Here was their official response (sent to us in emails and read over the air):

Statement from Trey Fabacher, Vice President and General Manager, WGCL-TV, CBS Atlanta

"Last night towards the end of the Tony Awards just after 11:00 p.m., WGCL encountered a few seconds of black and our local producers accepted that trigger as the end of the network broadcast and began our 11 p.m. newscast. The network feed of the Tony Awards was not over and WGCL did not air the final seven minutes of the broadcast. This was a human error and action is being taken to guarantee this does not happen again. We apologize to our viewers who were watching the broadcast. CBS Atlanta is a passionate supporter of the arts; this error in no way reflects the opinion of WGCL-TV, CBS Atlanta or its employees. We will also be airing the final segment of the Tony Awards at the start of all newscasts at 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 11pm today."

They did air the 7-minute segment at the top of each newscast. I don't know that their damage control worked. Lots of p*ssed off ATL viewers!

Most shows don't perform on Sunday nights anyway, but those shows that do, are nominated and are performing are usually dark on Tony night.

I was at the show last night and had a wonderful time. Our orchestra seats were fantastic, with a lot of Pippin fans. I got to talk to Larry Kramer very briefly at the gala, and saw Judith Light and Megan Hilty, who both looked gorgeous. My husband spent some time with Jerry Mitchell, who is just delightful.

Thank you I really know nothing about Broadway
