Some of you may have already had your state and local fairs, our Minnesota State Fair is about to start this week.

I LOVE talking about fair foods and fair traditions!

So, let's hear 'em!

I'm hungry just thinking about everything! YUMMY!!!

We're getting ready to head to our local county fair. :)
I'm looking forward to getting an Oh Boy (yummy cheeseburger) and maybe a funnel cake. :teeth: We always get a bunch of different things and share everything. :)

Our Fair just ended yesterday. The market animals were loaded up at 6:00pm and then we had to clean out their pens and stalls. The kids start school next week so this is a hectic time of year.

I eat my way thru the Fair every year! This past week I had funnel cakes, cotton candy, caramel apples, pocket tacos, fry bread with honey, hand dipped corn dogs, frozen lemonade, Ranch turkey wraps, popcorn, broasted chicken with corn on the cob and rolls, ice cream, Chai tea, hamburgers, and I got stung by a yellow jacket. It has been quite a week!!

I'm looking forward to corn on the cob, corn dog, caramel apple, ice cream from the dairy building, french fries...

Can't wait to see the animals too, the states largest pig is fun to see!

I HATE the fair. It is my husband's life mission to keep the fact our community even has a fair from our children!;)

We too are off to the fair this week. The Great Minnesota Get Together.

I'm looking forward to the animals, Sweet Martha's cookies (YUMM!!!), pronto pups, all the milk you can drink, and some apples.

I can't wait. I'm venturing out with the three kiddos while DH is in Bristol for the Nascar race. I'm making them wear matching M&M's shirts so they'll be easy to keep track of. Not sure how long I'll last- me with the three, but we'll make a good effort.

:( you hate the fair? why?

the heat, the crowds, fried foods on a stick and stinky animals, what's not to love? ;)

miche - how could I forget the cookies? Nothin' better! If they would just put the All you can drink milk booth closer to Sweet Martha's ;)

New at the fair this year - All You Can Drink Chocolate Milk!

As well as deep fried corn on the cob, gotta say that does not even sound good!

Good luck bringing the kids :)

Love the fair!!!! We are going on Saturday and I am counting down the days!!!

I am looking forward to French Fries, Corn on the cob, and pronto pups...

I heard there is even deep fried rice on a stick?

I agree about the milk being closer to Sweet Martha's.... I think I'll probably just have some cookies for lunch..

I know my kiddos are excited about all the free stuff they can grab. We'll be bringing loads of wonderful treasures home for sure.

I HATE the fair.

EWWWWWWWW

Me too.

Nothing about it appealed to me. We went to the Shelby County fair in Memphis last year. It was really overpriced. I can't believe anyone actually rode those rickety rides. I also hate carnival games and the way the operators try to scam you out of your money. The food stands just didn't seem like they would pass health codes so I opted not to eat. I did try was the "deep fried twinkie" I figured boiling oil would kill most anything but who know how long that oil was there. I won't even go into the animals.

We did see Uncle Kracker so that was a plus.

How big IS the pig?? We always have this HUGE holstein cow brought into the beef barn. I would guess he weighs 3000 pounds or more. He is very tall....seems more like a small elephant!

As for the food, we usually stick with the local fund raising booths for food. They are all clean and freshly painted every year and they DO pass Health Department inspection.

The best part about it was I ate all that junk and I think I still lost weight between all of the walking I had to do and the heat! When the kids leave home, we probably won't go at all any more. It's alot of work when you are going to "participate".

Here's an excerpt from an article about the 2002 winner for biggest pig:

'Big Bill, Minnesota's largest boar, is the talk of the animal barns at the fair. At 1,050 pounds and 5 1/2 years of age, Big Bill, of Jordan, beat out other hogs in the weight contest and won the privilege of being displayed in the swine barn at the Minnesota State Fair. Since 1976, an oversized hog has been featured each year. The purpose is to educate the public on how hogs formerly were fed to massive size -- decades before lean pork was valued.'

Here's a link to someone's pics from the 1999 MN State Fair, with a pig of that year's winer, plus the ever-popular Dairy Princesses carved in butter....

We'll be there on Thursday, eating some fried green tomatoes & corn fritters, various foods on a stick, and getting a bucket of Sweet Martha's cookies to take home...

WOW ~ that pig looks like the size of 4 of those kids hanging over trying to touch it!! I am impressed with the butter carvings! And....little donuts! I forgot about those....we had them too! I have to admit I have never seen seed pictures. Have fun this coming week!! :wave2:

You're making me want to watch Charolette's web. I can just picture that rat rolling around the fairgrounds. :)

We always enjoy the fairs here in Maine. We usually start with Skowhegan State Fair then Union Fair then Windsor Fair and close out with Fryeburg Fair. We don't have a State Fair as such. This year we didn't get to Skowhegan-partly due to the miserable weather we've had all summer. Union Fair is on now-we will go one evening this week after work. Windsor starts Sunday and ends Labor Day and Fryeburg is the 1st week of October-the last fair of the year. We'll have hot dogs, sausage, coffee, fried dough, ice cream, french fries, onion rings, apple dough something(!), cotton candy and plenty of Rolaids! Fryeburg Fair is our favorite since the leaves are turning then and the trip over is usually very pretty. We very much enjoy the draft horse show there, and like to see all the big steers and pigs. I'm not too excited about sheep. We walk through all the barns, watch the horse racing, check out all the exhibits. It's a tradition!::yes::

The Nevada State Fair starts on Wednesday. I'm going Sunday as they are having weiner dog races and I've entered my dachshund in them.:cool1:

Good luck with your race, mrsheppo. :)

I always love going to the Texas State Fair, which will start here in a few weeks. DH never lets me have the credit card or handle the cash when we arrive though, because I always end up buying some totally useless gadget that just sits around and collects dust.:p Ever since we started going together back when were first dating, we've made it a point to go to at least one Texas Lotto show. And we almost always win something..a teeshirt, free lotto tix, whatever.

DH and I are not big on rides, but we almost ALWAYS ride the Texas Star (the largest ferriswheel anywhere I think)at least once. It's so beautiful way up there looking over the Dallas skyline. *sigh*

When I turned 21, DH and I attended Budweiser Beer School at the fair.

I've also made it a point to try (and I usuallly fail heh heh heh:crazy: ) to keep DH out of the auto buildings. I swear every year he goes in there and comes ou t wanting to buy a new car. Last year, I got bit by the bug too and fell in complete lustful love with the Toyota Scion. The next car I buy in a few years when it's time to trade in the Neon, I'm am getting one of those babies!::yes::

Dutchess County fair starts tomorrow, and we will be going on Saturday. It is an hour and a half from here, but we love this fair. Looking forward to the milkshakes (best we have ever had), Roast Beef sandwiches from Fosters at the Fair, and ZEPPOLIES!
