Any recommendations out there? It's been about 7 years since I've purchased a new refridgerator.

One question I have, is I was thinking about getting one that has a bottom freezer compartment and getting rid of my old freezer. the thing is in my basement, over 20 years old and is in no way energy efficient. It is still working but since my sons are young adults, I've been stocking it less and less. right now it's only about 1/2 full. It's about a 7 cu ft one, relatively small.

What do you think?

TIA

we love the bottom freezer we have, but we also have a fully upright energy efficient freezer in the basement! lol I do feel the bottom freezer has more space than one on top, and definitely can fit things better than a side by side unit. good luck!!!! The last time I went shopping for one my husband was on a work trip, my kids were tiny and it was an emergency (current one was broken). I sure hope your shopping is not as stressful! HA HA

I bought an Lg French door with ice and water in the door about four years ago. It wasn't expensive for a stainless French door fridge and I haven't had any problems. I got my first French door fridge in 2006 then had side-by-side for three years and I much prefer French door.

Watching.... I need a fridge...after 20+ years mine is staring to come apart everywhere

I have the regular top freezer Fridge in white... I'm willing to sell it if you move it :D we are moving and don't need it in our new home any more.

Avoid the old school side by side. NEVER enough room in that freezer. Love the 3 door with the freezer on the bottom.

We got the Samsung 4-door French door fridge. Love it and has tons of space. Still keep old fridge in the garage for water and misc food.

We bought one this spring from Sears. Its a bottom freezer, french doors on top and ice in the freezer and not in the door. I love it!

The ice in the door ones took up a lot of storage space in the fridge area. And we got WHITE! There are still so many stainless ones out there and we did not want stainless.

Just got rid of our old side by side Kenmore from 1993 last month. Got a GE profile 3 door with freezer on bottom. It's a new color-slate- and we love it. Did not go with any in door ice or water as we never used the one in our old fridge. The ice maker in the bottom freezer makes enough for our family. So far we are loving it and I find we are eating out less and not wasting food especially from the crisper drawers as it has such good lighting and easier access to produce. Purchased at Lowes.

Go to sites like slickdeals.net, fatwallet.com and bradsdeals.com. Do a search for fridges. I've seen a few fridges on these sites in the past few days at awesome prices.

If I were in the market for a fridge, I'd get this one.

No water/ice in the door was a deal breaker for me. Ymmv. I exercise at home and fill up my water bottle with ice water at least three times per day as do my kids and having it in the door was my preference.

Avoid the old school side by side. NEVER enough room in that freezer. Love the 3 door with the freezer on the bottom.
LOL. I think of the freezer on the bottom as old school, everyone had those when I was a kid. First time I saw a side by side was when they were giving away one on Let's Make a Deal.
We had our first side by side for 27 years when we decided it was time. We have a Sears Kenmore side by side made by LG, love it. The advantage of a side by side, if you are organized, is that the items you use more frequently can always be at eye level in both the freezer and refrigerator, lesser used items at the bottom. No getting on your hands and knees to find something in the freezer. And it has a full cubic foot more space inside that the 3 doorsl. But is is all person preference.

French door refrigerators (with bottom freezer) are the popular choice now and it's what I would get if I were shopping for one. I do want to suggest that you not get rid of your old chest freezer in the basement if you think you'll want to store frozen items longer-term...the chest freezers are more of a deep freeze and food won't get freezer burnt as quickly as with a regular household fridge/freezer...At least that is how mine is (my old chest freezer is JCPenney brand! LOL). I freeze a lot of various homemade goods like soup, muffins, fresh berries from the garden, etc so I for one need the space a chest freezer has, and I also need it to be the deep freeze style. The French door refrigerators with bottom freezer would not have enough freezer storage for my husband and I. Pay attention to whether the ice maker is in the door of the fridge (typically holds less ice) or if it's located in the bottom freezer itself (holds more ice but leaves less freezer food storage space). Also consider if you want to pay more for a cabinet-depth refrigerator or if you don't mind if it sticks out way beyond the cabinets. Some French door refrigerators need a lot of clearance to open both doors enough to pull out the crisper drawers so if your placement is located next to a wall, that may be a problem for you.

We went from a side by side to a bottom freezer/french door last November, and I'd NEVER go back.

However we are guilty of still having both an upright and a chest freezer in the garage still (and they're both full!). Remember if you have one that it should be kept at least 2/3 full for peak efficiency (or at least store extra bags of ice/frozen water jugs to fill up the space).
