DD (12) woke up Saturday not feeling well. By 5:00pm she was running a fever of 102.1. She complained of headache, stomachache and sore throat. when I looked in her throat she had what looked like pus pockets (so used to seeing them she used to get strep a lot). So I dug through the medicine cabinet and came up some antibiotics the doctor told her she could stop taking a few months ago. There were 3 left. She took one Sat. nite and the other 2 yesterday. Last night after the motrin and tylenol her fever had broken, but this morning it is back at up to 102.3.

I made an doc appt for her for 12:30. She was supposed to go to Six Flags tomorrow with her friend and her parents, now she isn't going to be able to go.

I feel so bad for her. :(

Please send some pixie dust her way. She is being a trooper through this and not even complaining about having to miss Six Flags tomorrow.

Be sure you tell the doctor that you gave some leftover antibiotics. It is possible that she will test negative for strep now, so you want to be sure your doctor takes that into account. (and for future reference, don't save antibiotics. Especially when you're treating strep. Your child needs every single dose.)

I appreciate your concern but the doctor told us she didn't need to continue the antibiotics. If the doctor tells us to take all of a medication we do.

I've had Doctors advise to stop taking meds, too.

Now that she's had 3, you might want to mention it because they may want to write her a scrip for the needed dose.

Hope she feels better. :grouphug:

I definately had planned on telling the doc she has already had 3 doses of antibiotics. :)

I just have this gut feeling it isn't strep if she is still running a fever. Usually after one or two doses she is feeling like her normal self again. I am wondering if it is something viral that isn't going to respond to the antibiotics.

I will find out in just over an hour... or three. Ya know what waits are like at the doctors office.

Sending lots of :grouphug: & pixie dust her way!!! Poor thing! What a crappy way to spend spring break!! Maybe rent her some movies or something to make her feel better! :sunny:

I hate going to the doctors office. One giant germ factory.

You're right, it might or might not be strep. Strep can cause fever, however, even 72hrs after abx are started. So it's still a good idea to have it checked because strep can cause some pretty nasty after effects if it's not treated properly. Hope your little one feels better fast :thumbsup2

I will tell you that this happened to me once when my DD was 5. I also had some "leftover" antibiotics. My DD had started with a fever, sore throat, etc. I did the same thing as you and I gave her what I had left. After about the 2nd or 3rd dose, her fever broke and she was "almost" better. Of course, I ran out of antibiotics and within 12 hours, the illness came raging back. It was strep of course. I was really embarrassed for using the small dose of antibiotics. I mean, how ridiculous was that? If it *was* bacterial it was certainly going to need a lot more antibiotic than I had. But I do understand, when your kids are sick and you've got plans you just want them to get better quick!

Ack!

I feel ya. DS started running a fever Sat morning. about 102. I took his temp 10 minutes ago, and he was at 104.5. Yep 104.5, that's WITH tylenol. Now he's soaking in the tub with a dose of Motrin.

His 1:15 appt can't come soon enough!

Well I took her in and they did a throat swab right away. Even after 3 doses of augmentin the swab came back raging strep so she has it BAD. The doc said they have seen a lot of this lately.. been sending kids home with the normal antibiotics and it doesn't touch it. So she was prescribed another one that is working well on this strain.

She is missing on 2 extra dance practices to get ready for competition season and a day at 6 flags with her best friend. :(

But I did promise her that we would go out to lunch and the mall on Wednesday if she is feeling better.
