My heart feels for the homeless. Our wonderful capital city made the unfortunate decision to tear down a group of homeless men's shanty homes down by the river because they were not "up to code". It wasn't much, but at least they had shelter.

And the kitties and dogs, too. Poor guys.

This is so cold here today. A record this morning - at Cedar Rapids, -24 (prior record was -23). And wind chill was -50! Yes, - five/oh!!!

How cold is that?

Well, for starters, it is colder than both the North Pole, which was a balmy 37 degrees, and the South Pole, which was -18!!

Now, it is up to -12!!

Schools were cancelled by 9 pm last night! I think they didn't want to risk having the kids wait at the bus stops in these dangerous conditions. Plus, I think the buses would have trouble starting with their diesel fuel.

Predicted to go back down to -25 tonight, with a heat wave of 9 above tomorrow!!!

How cold are YOU today?

Its all this global warming. According to Al Gore, the cold just proves how warm it really is.

It was 91 here yesterday!! Today was a little cooler, it was 87!! I have worn shorts everyday this week!! And we had the A/C on yesterday afternoon!! Nothing like Janurary in Southern California! It usually isn't this hot this time of year. You guys are freezing and we are melting! Send some cold our way! I hate the heat!!

I'm not much of a believer in Wind Chill factors. It makes it sound like it's colder than it is. If it is -20 degrees, it's -20 degrees no matter how hard the wind is blowing. It is still -20 degrees. Yes, we feel less comfortable and the cold gets to you quicker but the temperature is still the same.

I left home this morning at 7 AM. I had to go north about 30 miles to pick up my Grandson. When I left my home temperature was -9 degrees, when I arrived at my destination, just 30 miles away it was -21 Degrees.

I also feel bad for the homeless, or at least some of them. There are organizations out the yahoo that are in place to give them shelter. They have one problem, they insist that alcohol and drugs not be present. Those that stay out in the cold, for the most part, have made the choice between heat and alcohol/drugs. I still have human compassion for them but many just won't take advantage of help that is available. They have their own agenda and it gets nearly impossible to help someone that doesn't want to be helped. Still it must be pretty miserable out there on nights like tonight.

Let's house swap! 90 and sunny sounds great. This afternoon we made it up to a balmy -9. The wind stopped so it didn't feel that cold.

No School tomorrow because of the school. We close because it's too cold go to school. It's funny we close earlier in the week cause of rain.

We Hamilton County school system we close over any thing.

That's me no work for tomorrow at all.

Its not quite as cold here yet as it has been for some of you, but its 5 degrees and I'm watching the digital thermometer drop steadily. Its been colder here. I'm sure it won't be a new record.

I too worry about the homeless, both humans and animals, during these freezing temperatures. The severe cold is deadly.

I woke up this morning and the temp was 12 degrees with a wind chill of 8 degrees

I thought I was done with these single digit temps when we moved from Indy to here (NC).

It was 22 below this morning when DD was getting ready to leave for school. Wind chill was around 39 below. Temperature might get all the way up to 4 above today! Worst part is that I worry about her car breaking down in the extreme cold. There are a couple of cell phone dead spots between the house and the school. We told her to call when she got to school and that if we hadn't heard from her in 30 minutes we'd be out looking for her so stay in the car if she broke down. Fortunately she got to school with no problems.

Two more days of this and it is supposed to warm up. Heading for Florida in three weeks and I can hardly wait!

Luckily I am working from home today.. and kids are done with finals so no school for them


I worry about the homeless too. Yesterday I had $$$ with me to give to the homeless I met on the street so they could go inside and warm up and have a coffee..
