Another one. We've had poolside Pam, Parking lot Penelope, Private neighborhood Prudence, and now Patio Paula. I almost used Permit Patty but that one has been used already.

I'd have pressed those charges that he declined to press for a false report.

I've had a neighbor contact a permitting office twice when I was in the process of replacing/repairing something right near the property line. I already told the neighbor that I hired a licensed contractor, and by the very nature it required an inspection to check that it be done to code. The repair permit was maybe $25. But after he contacted that office I had two people come by including a supervisor. The supervisor just told me I had to get it fixed, although later I got something in the mail telling me the same thing and that I had to get it repaired or possibly face fines.

But he never called 911. That's abuse of the emergency call system.

we had a neighbor who would watch for any business labeled car to come into the neighborhood, try to figure out what they were doing and then call in to the county (and sometimes state) to report 'potentially non permitted work' on everyone she disliked. it got to the point where we had to warn vendors that if a woman approached them claiming to want information on the kind of work they were doing for us 'because i'm in the market to have something similar done' to claim they were booked out years and stop the conversation immediately. she caused so many unnecessary delays for homeowners and contractors who were working within the letter of the law, wasted so much time on the part of government employees. i think the county staff celebrated as much as the neighborhood did when she moved away to another jurisdiction.

Why would you call the police for a permit dispute? I wish there was a false reporting fine. The worse thing is that tried to weaponize the police against the man by saying he pushed her ten feet. What a loon.

I don't think it was the permit dispute per se. It was that she was on his driveway and that she accused him of pushing her. But the neighbors witnessed what happened and said she wasn't touched.

Police said Thursday they are still investigating an incident on Marion Road on Monday involving a white woman who called the police on a Black neighbor following a dispute about a permit for his backyard patio, but that witnesses saw no physical contact.
In a Facebook video that has been viewed nearly a million times, the woman, dubbed "Permit Karen," accuses a man off-camera of pushing her off his property, while he and other white neighbors lining the street deny it. The story has been reported on widely in the national and international press.

Also - even if he did push her off of his property, that may be legal as "reasonable force" under New Jersey law, which can be used against a trespasser. So pushing someone off one's property is very different than pointing a gun.

I personally don't get what business it is of hers though. I mean if anything, that would be between the homeowners and the city or county. If anything she could have been sneaky in a roundabout way by asking if they had trouble getting a permit due to the pandemic by playing it off like she wanted to get some work done but didn't know if the permit office was open.

Our neighbors put in a beautiful deck last summer. It never occurred to me whether they had a permit or not. All I kept thinking was that they just upped their property value. Which in turn, helps me.

Why would this lady not be happy that her neighbors were doing upgrades to their home? What a miserable woman.

This may not have anything to do with race. She probably would have done the same thing, if it was a white couple. Stuff like this happens, when you have nosy neighbors.

We've had a neighbor call animal control on us, "because we weren't taking care of our dog". (In reality, he didn't like dogs & was hoping they would take her from us.) They showed up at our door one day. After meeting her, they apologized & went to the neighbor's house. We heard from a different neighbor that the complaining neighbor was told he had better never call them again. In a different neighborhood, we had a couple neighbors break into a room we were adding on to see if they could find any infractions. Apparently, they wanted to stop the add-on & force us to tear it down. We found out about it, because our next door neighbor confronted them. In the two situations, everyone but the next door neighbor was white.

Too bad this happened in NJ instead of NY. A few weeks ago, NY enacted a law, nicknamed after Amy Cooper, which makes it illegal to make false race-based 911 calls.

The couple in this case are a lawyer and law professor. So, it's likely, that while many suspect the white woman is racist, without her saying something explicitly racist, a case may not really stand up in court. So they declined to press charges.

In this case they could have at least agreed to "press charges" regarding the false emergency call. I know "press charges" is an overused phrase, but in this case the police were asking if the couple wanted the police to investigate a false report. Since they declined they didn't go forward, although it seems like they could.

Not sure there would necessarily be any hate crime enhancement here since there wasn't anything specific. That being said, who these days is stupid enough to make a false report to police or emergency services when cameras are right on them recording everything, and there are plenty of witnesses. That makes no sense.
