The salary really depends on where you are. My library is pretty comparable for this area, but they just did a salary study, too. I know Chicago public is pretty decent, but they're city employees (and suffer the layoffs that city employees do).
And I think some libraries try to make up with good benefits. I don't have to pay a penny for health insurance for myself or DH (excellent benefit!), I get 4 weeks of vacation, 12 sick days a year (and we can accrue up to 120 days!), and I get 3-5 floating holidays a year for the holidays we're open, like Veterans Day, Lincoln's B-day, etc. And although I'm salaried, I get comp-ed for working weekends - I'll get a full day off during the week for working 4 hours on a Saturday. Not bad.
I really do like what I do though. I've recently been put in charge of fiction, so I'm the Readers Advisory librarian now, and I oversee a group of librarians who select the fiction collection. Though I still work Reference. I teach Internet classes. I get to select all the Spanish adult books for the library, all the travel books (I LOVE that!!), and some audio language sets. And I get to go to out of state conferences every once in awhile. I even got to go Mexico a couple of years back to a Spanish Book conference!
