The yoga video is just sooo tricky - I have no balance whatsoever and I keep falling over:p
I must have looked such a sight - Blimp on one leg with the other stretched up in the air, then Kerrash!!

I never knew I had a duff ankle either - after all the kneeling exercises - ow!

I don't even feel particularly stretched either after all that as I couldn't do half of them properly

Oh well - get another one next week - or see if I can find a class.

Well, now you know. Thanks for telling me, I'm so uncoordinated that I would have fallen down too. I know now to stick with pilates ;)

I'm still proud of you for going out and buying that video because you gained this week. I can't get over it, you are really determined!

I'm going to take it back tomorrow to try and exchange it as it wasn't shrink wrapped - say I got it for a friend and I got the wrong thing - you never know - Might be able to exchange for Pilates.

cinmell - I think this is where TigH is supposed to sound in. I asked the same question earlier in the week and she gave me a website for Winsor Pilates. I would pass it on but have already forgotten the address.

I did go to Target tonight and buy a generic pilates tape, it was only 6.99 and I thought I would at least get the concept and if I want I can always go and get the Winsor Pilates for 39.99.

Which yoga tape did you get? There is a great "Yoga for Beginners" with Patricia Walden that if I can do it anybody can. Mostly standing or seated poses, so you aren't turning yourself inside out. If you can I would suggest exchanging your tape for that one.

Elsie, don't feel bad that you can't do yoga! I can't either. My body is not meant to wrap itself into an inside out pretzel. Pilates, though, I can do. So, I would suggest giving it a go. Denise Austin has a good Pilates tape, and the Winsor Pilates tape series is good too. Pilates really works your tummy!

Elise, you must have gotten a really advanced yoga tape!

I like the one by Kathy Smith. It's very peaceful and I felt great after I did it the first time. She really emphasizes focusing on your breath. Heck, it took me a few weeks to hold some of the poses without wobbling all over the place. The people in the videos are professionals who are already very limber.

My dear mother tried this yoga tape with me for 15 minutes yesterday. I could see her out of the corner of my eye. We were lying on our backs the whole time and I could see that she wasn't focusing on her breath. She was holding her breath trying to keep her leg up. Poor dear. After the 15 minutes was up, we just worked on her breathing a little. The tape we have is very relaxing - great music, Kathy Smith has a very gentle, soft voice. I highly recommend this tape to a beginner. The first time I tried it, I loved it!!! I felt so light and tingly at the end!

My pilates tape is great too. It's all floor work, so you are on your back or your side. Each exercise is only 6-10 reps, so you don't have to do each one for very long. (This is the 20 minute tape). It is challenging, but I don't expect to be able to get into the same positions as the ladies in the video, so I do the modified version.

Good luck! You are really determined and I know you will reach your goal!!! :)

Thanks for the Pilates website. I think I am going to order and give it a try. I know I need to do something other than just treadmilling so maybe this will be a good supplement for me. Do men use this program also? I was wondering if it is something DH could do with me.

Wow - I just searched the amazon site for Pilates and got back 119 results - over here on Amazon UK I only got 17

The shop I got my yoga vid from stocks most of them so I'll exchange it tomorrow - closed today as it is Good Friday - I needed the walk anyway;)

One of the things my wife and I did when we first started out (65 pounds heavier and 105 pounds heavier, respectively) with yoga was take some personal instruction. We just needed about eight weeks to understand the basics and get the confidence we needed to be able to modify the postures ourselves to fit our bodies' current capabilities.

Patricia Walden's beginners tape is good, but I found Alan Finger's (Yoga Zone) better for just starting out, while substantially overweight. There is also another option -- a beginners yoga tape specifically designed for overweight folks, taught by two very overweight women. I wish I could remember the name... perhaps it will come to me.

Just got Lynne Robinsons - Pilates weekly workout - 3 25 min workouts so I'll give this a go tonight.
