I will try this again. Last year I started writing a TR for one of the trips I went on and I think I made it through part of Day 2 before I totally stopped writing it. I love reading everyone else’s TRs so I am going to give this another go. Also, I really want to include pictures in this one because I think it really adds to the TR. But most pics probably won’t come until the actual trip. But I will try to throw some in here and there. Now on with the show!

Sunday March 4, 2007:

My mom and I are out shopping at the mall when I bring up the fact that my DB and his family might be out of town for my mom’s birthday in June. I’m super nosy and overheard DSIL talking about it. It’s not really a secret or anything, but I felt the need to mention it. Because this is not just any old birthday. My mom will be 60! I used to think that 60 was getting close to being old. But my mom is definitely not old. Not in the least. I like to think that I along with my DB, DSIL and their kids have kept her young and with it.

Anyway, that is when my mom dropped the bomb. My mom says “well, we should go to Disney that weekend”. :worship: If I knew how to do a cartwheel or backflip I swear I would have done them up and down the aisles of the Macy’s petites section :cool1: . You see, for as much as my mom loves WDW, I’m usually the one that brings up the idea of a trip and convinces her that it is a good idea. For my mom to bring it up herself without any prompting from me? Unheard of. But I jumped all over it like eggs on toast. Is that an actual saying? :confused3 I always want to use those snazzy sayings and I usually don’t ever use them correctly.

The thing is my mom has been wanting to do something special for her big birthday for about a year. We tossed around ideas for day trips, longer vacations, etc. But the problem is I am in grad school and I have therapy patients to see. And my schedule changes every semester so planning a real vacation far in advance is really difficult. DB and his family also have planning issues. But not the same as mine. They might as well plan things after they do them – that is how backwards they are :upsidedow . For them to think and plan a vacation (or anything for that matter) more than 2 weeks in advance is probably not going to happen. So when DSIL decided that they were taking a 2-3 week vacation to New England to visit her family during the month of my mom’s birthday, knowing that we wanted to do something a little special for it? Well it sort of ticked me off. My mom doesn’t really seem to care. Or if she does, she does a great job of hiding it.

Disclaimer: I swear we all get along great! But I do get miffed at their way of doing things sometimes. But that’s them and usually it doesn’t bother me, but for this it sort of did. Obviously. I keep rambling about it.

Ok. Moving on. I sent an email to DSIL today telling them that mom wants to go to WDW for her birthday and that if they are in town, they can come or not come. Or if my niece and nephew want to come that would be great too. They are 6 and 4. Mom and I always take them to Disney because 1) DB and DSIL like to have alone time and 2) DB and DSIL aren’t really fans of the Mouse and 3) I love to spoil them rotten and be the cool aunt for taking them to Disney World more times in their short 6 and 4 years of life than a lot of people go in a lifetime. But DB and DSIL have gotten better in the last couple of years though. I think they began to realize that when we do Disney, we aren’t amateurs about it. That stay at the BWI Concierge helped too ::yes:: . Just point my DB to “free” food and he’s in! “See this cookie? I checked downstairs at the bakery and they’re $2! I already ate 4 today. We saved $8!”

My mom’s birthday is June 9. A Saturday. And exactly 2 weeks after mine. The plan right now is to leave sometime on Friday June 8 and come home on Monday June 11. This may change depending on my patient schedule next semester. I’m praying for no Friday patients! (totally jinxed myself, huh?) Quick, someone knock on some wood.

BTW, Hi! I'm Shannon :wave2: This is my mom and I in NYC a couple years ago. Sad, I don't have any recent pics of my mom and I.

I’m in grad school for Speech Pathology. I’m hoping to be done in April/May of 2008. I’m at the point in the program where I’m having actual therapy patients and taking time off for me to go to Disney World is not an option. But luckily we only live 3 hours away so getting there isn’t too bad. 2 hours if you drive from my DB’s house.

Moving on As soon as I got home from the mall, the planning began. I priced out all of the resorts we really like or still have not stayed at but want to (that list is getting smaller and smaller). Seems there aren’t many we have not tried yet. See, we are going on a cruise in April which is costing a decent chunk of change. I’m unemployed as a full time grad student so my money must be spent on absolute necessities like purses and shoes. And trips to WDW. I would have loved to stay at the Poly Garden View Concierge again. I know it is by far my mom’s favorite of all the places we have stayed at. But it just isn’t smart to spend all that money for this trip. So we will probably be booking 3 nights at our old reliable – Port Orleans Riverside. We have stayed here tons of times and we really love it. Plus it is definitely in our budget, especially with that Florida Resident Discount. My favorite section is the Bayou.

You just described the Disney relationship between my mother and I, too! I'm fairly freked out if she even agrees to a WDW trip, let alone suggesting one! :rotfl:

Great start Shannon! :thumbsup2 Somehow, I totally missed that you're a fellow Floridian on the Peeps thread. Hiya neighbor! :wave2:

Okay, I'm in for the long-haul, so don't leave me hangin' with an unfinished TR, okay?! ;)

Shannon-
Great pretrippie! I look forward to reading more!:thumbsup2

Yay my first response! Thanks for reading!

Ok I promise to keep writing if you promise to keep reading! :thumbsup2

Great start!!POR is at the top of my list to try.:)

Thanks! I really don't think you could ever go wrong with POR - definitely try it on one of your next trips!

Monday March 5, 2007:

Today was all about the food. Actually everyday is all about the food for me. But on this day in particular, it was about Disney food. I contemplated the Dining Plan, but it really isn’t cost efficient for us. We don’t do many sit down meals, we actually like some of the counter service food, and we don’t like wasting so much time at the sit down restaurants. So I easily talked myself out of it. Plus, I realized that we could renew our APs, stay at POR, and still come in under the cost of the dining plan. And we would already have tickets for future trips! :thumbsup2

But I still wanted to have a special birthday dinner for my mom. See, she is probably my best friend. Wait. Probably? She is my best friend  . We have always had that freakish Gilmore-Girls-ish bond. Except my mom did not have me when she was 16. And neither of us are waifish-ly thin like Lorelai or Rory. Either way, I wanted to do something special. So I made a list of restaurants that I thought would be good potential birthday dinners:

California Grill
Coral Reef
Narcoose’s
Citrico’s
Le Cellier
Jiko’s
Fulton’s Crab House
Boma
Artist Point
Raglan Road

I posted some questions on the DIS, read and re-read the menus, looked at pictures of food from the various restaurants, had my mom look at the menus and revised the list:

Cali Grill
Coral Reef
Le Cellier
Jiko’s

Much smaller huh? Of course it is just about 90 days out so the chances of me getting an ADR at any of these places on my mom’s birthday are slipping away as we speak. We will probably be celebrating with a burger from Cosmic Ray’s :rolleyes1 . As my mom starts perusing the many menus I gave her to study, she immediately goes to the desserts section first and then looks at the rest of the items if she finds a dessert that sounds extra appealling.

So now the obsessing is beginning. What else could I do to make the day special? A personalized birthday cake? A fireworks cruise? Something that I have yet to discover? I'm definitely open to anything special for this day. We will definitely get the bday button at whatever park we're at. I'm telling the resort when I make the ressie, and any restaurants we're eating at. But I'm sure there are other things (even small things) that I probably don't know about. So if you know, please share with me! :flower3:

Oh and before I went to bed I told my mom that her homework for the next day was to think about what restaurant she wanted to eat at for her birthday dinner. She just rolled her eyes, smiled and said “but it’s months away!” Exactly mom. It’s summer and with the dining plan, good restaurants (and even not so good restaurants) fill up fast! Didn’t she realize that? You’d think she’d know all this by now :sad2: .

Sorry no pics this time. Thanks for reading! :cutie:

Great pre-trip report! That's going to be so nice to spend your mom's b-day w/ her at Disney World! Look forward to reading more!

You should convince her to go to the CA Grill. I don't know if you've ever eaten there or not, but it's awesome!

Thanks! I know I really was looking forward to trying it. Cali Grill was the first restaurant I thought of for her bday dinner, but we both have also been interested in checking out Le Cellier. I think we like that we don't have to rush back to our resort to freshen up and change clothes. We can just head on over the way we are! But if I ever spend my bday at WDW, you better believe I'll be eating at the Cali Grill!

Hold the phone! I just was reading your siggy, dizchick, and saw that you did the college program in 2002! I did the 2002 Fall Advantage (May through Jan)! Small World. Where were you? I was at Epcot, Wonders of Life Attractions.

Great Pre TR so far Shannon. If you decide on Coral Reef you could surprise your mum with a diver. Pigget started a thread about it a while ago and it sounds really good they personalise the menu with photos too. :thumbsup2

Wednesday March 7, 2007:

Wooo-hoooty! :woohoo: I booked the resort today. Port Orleans Riverside in a standard room for June 8-11 :goodvibes . I may have to change the dates (arrival or departing) because of school, but I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t have anything on both Monday and Friday because then we probably wouldn’t go. And that would really stink. And I won’t know until the first week of May if this is the case.

Oh and I will have to call back and apply any discounts (Fl Res or AP) that come out. Not a problem though.

Also, a birthday dinner ADR has been made. There was an opening for Cali Grill for that night which I took. But when I told my mom about it, she said “I thought we were going to eat in Canada”. Ugh. What the birthday girl wants, she gets :thumbsup2 . So I just called back and Le Cellier had an opening for dinner. Lots actually. I took the 5:30 slot. We normally eat early-ish dinners anyway and this will give us time to walk off the huge delicious meal that I hope we are going to have.

I also booked Boatrights at POR for breakfast on check out day for 9:00 am. We always like to linger at the resort but still leave at a reasonable hour and breakfast here is pretty yummy and usually quiet and relaxing. Plus it helps ease the depression that sets in when I wake up on check out day :sad1: .

Oh and I told the resort CM and dining CM that it is my Mom’s birthday! Hopefully they will do something a little special for her!

Speaking of the Resort CM, that was the longest and most stressful conversation ever! My phone was cutting in and out (actually I think it was the Disney line) and he was sooooo slooooow. It went something like this:

Me: Yes I would like to make a new reservation please.
Slow McSlowsky: for what dates?
Me: June 8 for 3 nights
(5 minutes later)
Me: hello?
Slow McSlowsky: Yes?
Me: Oh just checking. It sounded like the call dropped.
Slow McSlowsky: *chuckle*
(5 minutes later)
Slow McSlowsky: Ok what resort are you looking at?
Me: Port Orleans Riverside please
(5 minutes later)
Slow McSlowsky: Okay…..

And it literally went on like this for the entire call. I kept looking at my phone to make sure I was still on the line. I could hear absolutely nothing! But I got it done!

So I only booked 2 sit down restaurants. I told you we don’t eat very many table service meals. As it gets closer I may start to think about one for Sunday depending on the actual finalized dates of the trip.

Thanks for reading!

Up Next: Birthday Cake! Yum-O!

Thanks for reading Jo! Coral Reef was definitely up there - mainly because I thought the diver sign was so neat! But the menu at Le Cellier won us over. That and all the great reviews it has gotten. We've tried eating there about 3 times and it is always booked. Finally I will get to see what all the fuss is about :cool1:

When I booked my ADR's we had a really slow CM too I booked 10 meals and after each one he went through the whole no smoking policy etc etc it went on forever and it was a transatlantic call :scared1:

Hey, I think I've had Mr. McSlowsky, too! Sounds JUST like a ressie call I made a couple trips ago. Drives me nuts!

Congrats on getting your lodging and dining ressies done - you are so ready now :cool1: Or are you? What's next? popcorn::

Hi Shannon~Love your reports so far. I got hooked because of the picture of you and your mom...what a great relationship. My mom is early 60's and we are going away with my parents in August and I plan on taking pictures of just me and my mom now : )

And my birthday is also June 9th! Its my evil Gemini twin that always pulls me away from the real world to continuously plan the next Disney trip.

I am going to Disney with my DH and 3 kids. I am going to be at POR celebrating my big 40! (CHOKE) 5/24-5/30 just a little bit ahead of my auctual birthday. My present to myself is 2 nights at BC on 5/28-3/30....can't wait : )

Will be checking back to read more:thumbsup2

I know it is their policy but I have done it hundreds of times - I get the drill. That's what I want to say but I just answer politely like they have just given me a wealth of new info.

Did you also know that Donald Duck's bday is June 9?

You will be in WDW for my Birthday! Mine is May 26, so another Gemini here! :wave2: Oh and didn't you here? 40 is the new 30 :thumbsup2

THANK YOU! Will remember that about being the new 30 ; )

I did not know that about Donald Duck....how nice. June 9 is also Mr. Johnny Depp(Captain Jack Sparrow's) birthday too.
;)

My Pre TR has 2 pages! You do not even understand how excited I am about this!
:woohoo:  :cool1:  :cool1: :woohoo:

I'm feeling a little writer's blockage, but I will try to post something every couple of days (if not more) just to keep this thing going. Once I book the resort and dining arrangements, I tend to not plan much more. But I guess there is the itinerary which I have been known to change many, many times! I haven't even looked at the park hours or EMH yet. Ok, now I have something to write about! :thumbsup2

Thank you all SO much for reading!

I'm loving it so far Shannon, can't wait to read more !!!

Crossing my fingers and knocking on wood that your school schedule doesn't dampen your trip plans.

BTW, did you enjoy NYC? Caylin and I would like to go one year in December to see all the window displays, see a show, and go to Serendipity3 for some goodies. We have the Gilmore-girl Mom/Daughter thing going on, too. ;)

Thanks for stopping by! Yes I really liked NYC. I had been there a couple times prior to that trip but this time we really took the time to see all of the NYC spots - statue of liberty, ellis island (for all my irish ancestors), empire state building, st. patrick's cathedral, etc. We saw Sweet Charity (with Christina Applegate). OMG it was awesome. The 4th row seats disn't hurt either. And Serendipity is purely :cloud9: . We waited about 2 hours though just to get in. It was crazy busy. We only got the Frozen Hot Chocolate but it was soooo worth it. I forget how old your daughter is, but we stopped by American Girl to get some outfits for my niece's doll. It is a little girls dream come true. I wanted to buy everything there!

Off to check out yor pre-TR!

We want to do it ALL in NYC, too !! I am thinking it will be a few years from now, though. She is 14 now and I want her to be able to "appreciate" what it has to offer besides all the cool shoe stores. She wants to be a designer; fashion, interior, whatever. She is really into Art History so she is leaning towards majoring in that so she can studay abroad.

Brandon got me the Serendipity3 frozen hot chocolate kit for a stocking stuffer, and I would wait 2 hours for the "real" thing, too ;) I want to eat there as well, it's all about the food with me, too. Their website sells a few things from there if you didn't pick anything up on your trip, but you probably already knew that.:)

Can't wait to hear more plans for your trip in June. I think I'm going to surprise Caylin with tea at the GF for our trip in Sept., she knows about the trip, so I have to plan a few surprises for it.
