I've been letting our beagle/basset, Parker, sleep on my bed for the past 4 nights while DH was out of town.

Tonight it's back to his crate. Parker won't be happy. It's going to be a noisy night... :(

I agree, dogs can be just like kids. Once they get comfortable tehy don't want to go back to where they are supposed to be. As much as it will drive you nuts, bear the barking and crying. You might not get a lot of sleep. Hide under a pillow or use earplugs. Good luck. :wizard:

It's my fault. I asked for it. But DH did not. I didn't tell him that he was replaced while he was gone.

Parker's crate is downstairs, but DD suggested that I put it in one of the bedrooms so that he doesn't get lonely. He doesn't really like his crate. :(

Funny, when we had our other collies (at the rainbow bridge now ) and this is before children. DH had to go out of town for a few nights. The collies always slept on the floor by our bed. While DH was gone I let them both sleep on the bed, I think about 3-4 nights.

DH came home we got ready for bed and climbed in. The one collie was very obedient, just lied down on the floor. The other younger one jumped right in. DH said, Kaesee , what are you doing? And she jumped down. DH said, Wonder what got into her? I said, I don't know.

He liked the dogs but not in bed. Funny, never crossed his mind, the dogs replaced him while he was gone. :teeth:

Poor puppy! He'll be OK though.

Why is it going to be a bumpy and noisy night?? :teeth: ;)

Well, I WISH that it was going to be a bumpy and noisy night like THAT!!! But DH was in Croatia. Left on Sunday, home today. He's exhausted. :(

Nope, it's going to be noisy because Parker is going to be voicing his displeasure of being back in his crate ALL night.

I just took some Benadryl. Maybe I will sleep through the barking. I know DH will! :)

Well then hopefully by the time your husband has rested up, then Parker will have settled down. :thumbsup2

You know, Parker is really good regarding his housetraining. And I have left him for at least 6 hours here at home without being in his crate. I think that he would be fine not in his crate at night now.

Any reason that I should stick with the crate? If he liked it, that would be one thing. But he really doesn't like it. When he was in foster care he shared a crate with a foster "brother" and was fine. I think that he wants company...poor pup.

Just be real careful he's not a wonderer while you're sleeping, so he doesn't get into anything.

Pups like to chew wires, carpets, shoes, and such. Housetraining is only part of it. I kept all my dogs in crates and eventually weaned them away. My collies now are out of their crates. One was a kennel dog for 2 years, we've had her almost a year but she still needs alot of guidance , the other one is good good good.

You know your dog. if you think he can be trusted, give it a shot.

Is the dog's crate in another room where you can close the door and muffle the noise?

Good idea about the Benadryl. You did kind of sound like you were catching a cold/allergy ;)

Call me chicken. Or call me brave. But I think that I may let him stay out of his crate tonight. When DD was home over Thanksgiving he slept with her dog on the couch (OK - so now that I think of it, he hasn't been in his crate at night for almost a week :( ) .

He isn't a puppy per se - we don't know exactly, but he is somewhere between 1-2 years old.

I will try to dog proof the house, and then go to bed with our door closed, and see how he does.

I think that I would rather risk a little destruction (which I would doubt) than risk Parker the Barker.

report in the morning if you can. I was just thinking. I give our dog a treat once she's in her kennel and "locked in". That way she knows she's being rewarded for good behavior. Hopefully, you and dh will be well rested in the AM. :goodvibes

I give Parker a Kong any time I put him in his crate. Does that count? He will pick a treat out of that and is quiet for a few minutes, then he starts the barking. Sometimes it lasts a few minutes, sometimes it goes on periodically all night. :(

I will let you know what we do and how he does in the AM!

~Night!

Well Parker made it through the night not in his crate, not on our bed and he was just fine. I believe that he slept the entire time - he was sound asleep when I went upstairs last night.

I thought that maybe he would have scratched on our door whenever he woke up and found himself in the dark, but he didn't. (Unless he DID and I just did not hear him. Benadryl can be soooo helpful! ;) )

So maybe we are done with the crate? I don't know. Will have to play it by ear.

Our dog sleeps in her crate - except when dh or I are out of town. Then she's on the bed - but goes right back in her crate when we're both home. She seems to know the rules.

I wish I could leave her out of her crate for safety reasons. I worry that I won't get to her in a fire or that she will ignore an intruder if she's in her crate. However, she has a fussy stomach and occasionally has bouts of vomiting. If I wake up to a nasty surprise, I'd rather have it be in her crate!
