It's broken, isn't it?

I bought a Sony CyberShot DSC-S500 about a year ago. I was taking some pictures today and I accidentally dropped it on a thickly carpeted floor. I've dropped it once or twice before on non-carpeted floors without a problem. Now, when off, the lens cover (sorry for the not-so-technical terms) stays open. I put in the batteries, turn it on; the lens pops out, the cover half-closes, then the camera immediately shuts itself off automatically. I've already been looking for a replacement, and the reviews I've seen for the CyberShots say that they're relatively fragile, which surprises me because I've dropped it before without problem. I can't get it to even stay on long enough to download the one picture that's on it. So...is it pretty much done for? I can't have it repaired by a third party (for my own reasons).

Hmmmm, now I'm curious. Are these reasons related to the content of the one picture? :scared1: :rolleyes1

My DD, then 2, dropped my dad's camera in the driveway last fall and it had a similar problem. The lens got bumped and was a little crooked, so it wouldn't extend properly, and when it turned off the little lens cover wouldn't slide all the way closed because it was crooked. It was pretty easy to fix, I turned the camera on and then bumped the lens with my hand in the opposite direction to get it un-crooked (see, I can use technical terms too!). It took a couple tries and a little lens-wiggling, and was really scary, but it worked and is now good as new. Whew, because I couldn't afford to replace the camera!

maybe try holding down the power button for a few seconds... there's been times where my lens has been half stuck out before on my S3, where just holding the powere button down for a few seconds reset it, then turned off...

Don't know if it'll workin your case, but worth a shot

sorry to here that happened. I luv my sony cybershot and I drop it all the time LOL. I have 5 year warranty though.
