The last time I went to WDW was 28 years ago. As a teenager I took three day-trips as part of summer camp programs at Temple Terrace, FL ('74-'76). Naturally, being one of a group of teenaged boys turned loose on The World with only a map and a pocketful of E tickets to guide us, those trips consisted almost entirely of waiting in line for Space Mountain, riding, then getting right back in line to ride it again.
I remember clearly that I felt like there was something 'special' about WDW, but I just couldn't appreciate it at the time.
A few years later I married a beautiful young maiden, and we tried for many years (twelve, to be precise) to have children...to no avail. So, being modest and laid-back sorta people, without children, we've spent most of our vacations just lounging on quiet beaches on the Gulf. Having found a beautiful, secluded, private beach not too far from home has suited us just fine, and since WDW kinda seemed to us an 'extravagance' for People Who Have Children, we never gave it much thought.
But four years ago, when the DW and I were both well into our thirties and had abandoned all hope of having children of our own, lo and behold, our Prince was born. Two years later, our Princess came along. I'm now convinced that the old adage about 'practice makes perfect' is true. We 'practiced' for a lonnnnng time, and they're as close to perfect as any Dad could hope for. (Um, yeah, I guess I am slightly biased...)
Anyway, as much as they've already grown to love trips to the beach, it is - after all - just sand. This year, they're going to have the best vacation (so far) of their lives. (Even better, their grandparents are going, too.
)
Having not been in so long, I had no idea how much Things Have Changed, and how complicated planning could be. I suppose I got the best deal I could through CRO (We have reservations at Pop Century, because we needed two rooms, and because the little ones were fascinated by the photos of the giant toys on Disney's website), but I wish I had discovered this place sooner. Oh, well. Next time (CS or AK next year -- we're already planning) I'll know...
Now, as the Big Day draws nearer, I'm more excited than DS and DD are. There is nothing I love more in life than making their dreams come true, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the Wonder-lights in their eyes. They've known about the trip for a month now (that's years in 'kid-time') and I'm sure by now they're thinking that we were just putting them on about actually going. I'm also sure they think their Dad has lost his mind -- every day they see me checking the weather in Orlando, and surfing the Disney-'net, with this faraway look in my glazed-over eyes and smiling like a Cheshire cat.
But I know something they don't know...yet.
I know about The Magic.
