To everyone who helped me with my dilemma of what lens to get to replace my irrepairable kit lens, thank you so much!
After watching eBay selling off used lenses for more than it costs for a new one, I got a great deal on the 18-105 VR brand new with a warranty on a New Year special offer. Instead of getting another kit lens, plus the 55-200, after a good think (and a ton of research and review reading) I have opted for the one I just got and will add the 35mm f1.8 prime to my kit in a couple of months.
I am soooooo excited: I have a camera again. Just had to tell someone and it's pointless announcing to people who aren't interested in photography "I got a new lens" to which the response is usually, "Huh?
That's, er .... nice."

..... but the lens was sticky and jerky to rotate the zoom and VERY noise when autofocusing. I didn't know any better as a newbie, but instinctively didn't feel it was right. Short story, it did 2 weeks at WDW and packed up at MCO when we were leaving.
