We were in Disney last week, had the basic dining plan, and were talking.... (this is longer than I intended.. SORRY!!! ;))

I had made ADR's both in advance and last minute - multiples in one day, since I wanted us to have lots of flexibility about where we were, when and what we were doing, and had every intention of cancelling them as we went along (a day in advance) via my iPhone.

However, I hadn't tested out this plan before going.... and once down there discovered that the way you get out to your reservations to cancel them thru the extremely convoluted and not very userie WDW website, isn't an option on an iPhone because of the way that particular bit of the website functions (I think Flash incompatibility and a bunch of other geekerie). So, I gathered the gang together and figured out which reservations we absolutely wouldn't use and called.

To be specific, I was on location, in the Land Pavillion, sitting outside the bathrooms - about the quietest location I could find and be inside (it was raining) at the time. The new automated system is a bit of a pain, as you have to answer umpteen questions, and of course, CANCELLING a reservation isn't one of the multitude of options - inspite of telling the nice automated lady that I was looking to cancel reservations. I managed to get it done (and I have to say, encountered some sort of hilarious extreme rudeness from the CM - long story), but I couldn't help but think..... I'm trying to do the right thing here, and Disney has made it nearly impossible.

Sure, part of it was my own fault, by having multiple ADR's - but why isn't there a specific button on the main Disney front page about dining reservations? It seems like such a logical thing to have, considering it's the main way (and certainly the most efficient for me) to make ADRs at this point.

It got us all to thinking... why doesn't Disney have iPhone apps that are not games? Like a Restaurant Reservation app.... it could operate a little like a times guide or a wait times guide does in application form.... one place that would manage all of your dining reservations, and making it easy to cancel them. The reservation portion could function much like it does on the website.

Imagine though... for anyone who has the free Wait Times app.... if it had a "Near ME" function. For instance, you are standing in the heart of the World Showcase with 5 cranky people/kids... all you want to do is sit down in air conditioning and relax and have a nice meal... the last thing you want to do is troop everyone across the whole WS, asking at every receptionist if there is availability (we have done this, it isn't pretty, and it gets uglier as time goes on). Imagine if you could hit a "Near Me" button, and it would tell you what restaurants had availability starting in an hour (because I think real time would be nearly impossible to accomplish), nearest your GPS location.

I would so pay $5 for that. In a heartbeat. :woohoo:

So - iPhone users - what do you think? Would such an app be something you'd use? Why hasn't Disney gotten on the app bandwagon???

Now I see why it seems all the restaurants are booked. Are you complaining that you had a hard time cancelling your MULTIPLE reservations? Just think of how much time I have wasted on the phone and computer everyday trying to get reservations for December because people have double booked restaurants. I understand you tried to do the right thing and cancel the DAY BEFORE but to some that is too late. People that are already there have missed out on a good reservation because you had double booked.:sad2:

Multiple reservations?? Why? Others are trying to get reservations too.. This is just plain rude.

Oh dear...OP, I think you've inadverantly touched upon a hot button topic onthe DIS, having multiple reservations at once. Lots of folks here on the DIS find that problematic.

But I'll grant you that there are many legitimate reasons why you might want to be able to make or cancel dining reservations in a simple fashion. One of Disney's phone lines I think it's 1-800 - WDW DINE - Is supposed to be for dining.

I also find it aggravating that you can't walk up to most restaurant podiums and just find our what's available in the area. I'm not asking for the whole World, but if you are in WS, it seems they should be able to tell you there's an opening next door. If you are at CP they should be able to tell you if there's any openings at LTT.

Usually I just observe the postings on this board and am not compelled to offer my opinion. This is the exception and I am sure that I will be sorry. I understand OP's desire to have maximum flexibility and have multiple reservations. I have those planner and peacekeeper characteristics and have often felt like that would be nice to have multiple reservations. Out of consideration for less compulsive planners I have not taken advantage of the glitch in Disneys dining system that lets us multiple book. But as "rude" as you might think it is to take advantage of that system, it is also rude to call someone out on it when they are just trying to come up with a better way to accomodate park goers. Is that really the tone and environment we want to develop on a restaurant board? It is up to Disney to police and improve its system. It is not our responsibility to judge and embarrass our disney loving peers. Is getting dining at Disney stressful - yes. Is this the place to call out our fellow posters (that are posting on something completely different) and embarrass them? I hope not.

I made my ADRs today and couldn't double book for the same time frame (dinner) on the same day. One was a park restaurant and the other at a resort. My husband had apparently also called and made a dinner reservation for the same day.

But to the OP's point, I think an iPod app would be helpful - we're getting iphones later this month. But I think at this point, we should be happy that we can make the reservations we can online ;) Though, we've never had a problem looking up available times at the resorts or parks.

I highly doubt you are the only person who makes multiple reservations. I was just saying to my husband that an app for the i phone would be great. It wold be so helpful as I have been obsessed with finding my reservations!~
Hope u had a nice trip

I think that we ALL just have to accept the fact that flexibility and Disney TS dining do not go together. If you want flexibility, get the QS dining plan.

This is so Ironic, I was browsing all of the Ipod Apps for Disney ones last night and couldn't find anything that I wanted...like Restaurants and maybe even Park Maps. :rotfl:

Check out WDW Maps @ pinpoint.com. I think it was only $3.99. If you have the new iphone it will actually GPS you on the park map. You have an option to show the entire park map, who restrooms only or show restaurants only. You can actually get to the dining menus. Right now the app includes all the major parks, downtown disney and blizzard beach. The waterpark additions / updates are free.

I love it and cannot wait to use it.

HA! I had a feeling that some might look only at that point and not even bother with my question... or to the overall point of why is it so hard to cancel a reservation (which I did do btw using the WDW DINE number).

A) I had no double bookings, at least no two for the same time, or even within the same hour - meaning, on one day I had a reservation for 12:30, for 1:45 and for 3pm.... because with a party of 5 adults from three different states, where I was the trip coordinator, and having no idea of what our timing would be like on any given day, I wanted to make sure we had some bases covered for TS during Free Dining and Food and Wine Fest.

B) The only reservation I made 90 days in advance was the Signature Dining of the Yachtsman - in fact, most of them were done in the two weeks preceeding our trip, as I finally was able to nail down a touring plan, and none of them were at what are considered to be "high demand" restaurants, or even during high demand times. In fact, it was mostly done because on a certain day we knew we'd be @ the WS in Epcot, but not know how we'd be handling the F&W Fest, or where we'd end up at any one given time.

C) Cancelling the day before still matters... I have indeed benefitted a couple times from last minute cancellations (most notably being able to walk up to Cindy's Castle back in the day with a party of 7 at 9am and be seated because of a last minute cancellation). Especially for those restaurants at the WS, where folks are ambling around, and decide last minute to try and eat at a specific place.

It's not the typical way I've done Disney in the past - but this was an unusual trip, and tricky to coordinate. Using the online system made it extremely easy to see what restaurants would be fully booked and which ones weren't over the times that I was requesting, and allowed the very flexibility of which I took advantage.

Were there reservations I wished I could have gotten, that were possibly taken because of other folks "maybe" booking? Sure... do I blame them? Heck no - we are all trying to plan the best possible vacation; tailored to our individual needs.

BACK TO THE APP.... I have the WDW Dining app, which has menus, only one of which wasn't fully updated (The Yachtsman). I just kept thinking how great it would be if there was some sort of "availability" and reservation manager... there is a "Near Me" function already part of that app and everything.

That to me is a triple booking...three lunch reservations for one day! That is what is wrong with the Disney system. It should not allow people to do that. I like to plan ahead too and when people book just to cover themselves "in case" that is just plain wrong.

I understand that a party of 5 is difficult to plan for, which is another good reason to be organized before hand.

This frustrates me... our first time back in 13 years and I cannot get Fantasmic dinner reservations. I am hoping it's not because someone has 3 reservations just to make sure they fit in. Just make one and tell your family this time they are expected.

Multiply your family by how many more are doing the same... I was online last night and was unsure of a time on Thanksgiving, but chose one time and figured we will have to make it work. I made a second reservation and immediately cancelled the first.

I'd also like to point out that not everyone has an iPhone. Just calling isn't exactly the hardest thing in the world to do.
