and we just had trick or treaters!!!!! :scared1:
And I'm not talking teenagers......I'm talking mom with a 2 LITTLE KIDS!!
3 & 5 year olds!!!

That's just ridiculous!! :sad2:

I was soooo excited to give out candy that I made the whole family wait around until 8:00 to go out to dinner. By 8:00 we had had TWO trick or treaters. I was so dissapointed. On our way out of the neighborhood we saw HORDES of them but we were hungry by that point. I was really expecting the littlest ones before dark. We have lives. We go out to dinner on Friday nights. We weren't about to hole ourselves up in the house all evening long just to hand out candy. I don't understand why people wait so late to go TOT'ing.

I didn't have my lights on!! We had gone to a friends house & neighborhood and got home about 9. DH & I were in the living room watching TV when the doorbell rang. No outside lights on, no lights on the front side of the house. Nothing!

I gave them a couple pieces of DD's candy, but still....10:00!!

The mom probably just got off of work and wanted to take her own kids trick or treating, not give that opportunity to a babysitter, that she'd never have again - one of the first times her kids can really understand trick-or-treating. Give her a break.

she probably works, just came home or has a baby and had to wait for her husband to come home till she goes out. U never know circumstances. I know its freaky but i would give her the benefit of doubt.

I don't really see a problem with that. If you didn't want trick-or-treaters at that point, then don't answer the door.

We were really quite surprised at how early things wrapped up around here. We were sure since it was Friday kids would be coming 'round until midnight. Our last ToTer came at 8:30 and we blew out the jack-o-lantern at 9 because it seemed dead. If someone came after that and we were still up, we would have given them candy. We had lots.

if that is the case she should go to a house of people she knows at 10 pm.

I agree and also she should not be taking kids to houses where the outside lights are off. When the outside lights are off that means no candy.

I had someone do that here too last year - my outside lights were off because I ran out of candy and it was about 10 pm and some kids still rang the door bell. I answered it and told them I was out of candy that is why the outside lights were turned off.

I agree she probably had to work late. I would much rather have little kids ringing my doorbell at 10 than the teenagers.

So because the mom had a busy schedule, it was perfectly acceptable for her to go to a house that did not have their lights on at 10pm and ring the doorbell? At what point do good manners come into play?

I'm not sure everyone got that memo about outside lights. While you might think that is the official sign that a house is not handing out candy, not everyone agrees or understands this. It's an odd thing to get upset about, imo.

I've lived here for 12 years and it has always been like that here in our town and a reminder is printed in the newspaper every year along with the hours posted for 6-9.

So lights out at 10 means no treats and everyone who lives here should know this ,so no excuses for ringing door bells at 10 where the lights are off.

It's printed in the newspaper that ToTers are not to go to houses whose front porch light is not on? I've heard of hours being posted but I didn't realize they were getting so specific with the rules.

Yes there are rules in some towns and cities about this. It was also like this in the town I grew up in, in the midwest and that was years ago - LOL we won't get into how long though ;). The rules are there for safety reasons. I know I would not want my kids to be going up to houses with no outside lights on.

Right but you'd be with them, right? Especially at the ages that we are talking about in this post.

It is flat out common sense. If a house is darkened on Halloween, you don't go and ring the doorbell. It is also common courtesy not to ring doorbells at 10pm. I am in my mid-40's and it has been this way since I was a kid. I have lived in many different cities and two states over the years and this has always been the case. I can't say we had any written rules in any of the places I have lived but thankfully we were blessed with common sense.
