We had some windy weather on our CC day a few years ago and the captain wasn't sure if he would be able to dock. We had a sea day and the winds died down and he decided to dock. We had an abbreviated CC day.
I think it's dependent on the specific situation. No way to say in advance "this is what will happen." As PP mentions, last year there was a complete 180 and a cruise out of NYC to CC and Nassau was re-routed north along the Canadian coast instead. But usually a weather issue may simply impact one day - cancelling a port stop and having an extra day at sea. Occasionally they may be able to re-arrange port stops (flip Nassau and CC or swap in something different completely), but don't expect that.
We've had itineraries change right before a cruise, then change again during the cruise, due to port damage. When hurricanes are involved, the only thing you can do is keep an open mind, and be flexible. Like a pretzel.
FWIW, the crew on Castaway Cay worked really hard to "rehab" the island in time for our visit. The leaves were brown from the salt spray, but the debris had been cleaned up.
Out of our 8 DCL cruises, only two have had changes. One Caribbean one was rerouted farther away from Cuba because of a tropical storm...still made CC. The other was last Sept. on a Med. cruise when the sea was too rough at Monte Carlo (a tendering port), so we had an "at sea" day and docked at Marseilles the next day. The ships are ready with plan A, B, C and, probably D for any unexpected situation. Heard yesterday that the Magic had to pick up 10 immigrants out of a boat adrift in the Mediterranean, which might have caused a port change. To paraphrase the Farmers Insurance ads, "DCL knows a thing or two because they have lived a thing or two."
Have been rerouted a couple times. They have more flexibility with CC because its their island. Have had extra sea days, and have had back to back days in cabo san lucas. But i highly doubt they will route you to cabo san lucas
Yeah, we were on the 8 day out of NYC that got rerouted last year. Was looking forward to Bahamas and WDW but the day before it was announced that Hurricane Matthew was heading straight up the Eastern Seaboard so no way they could travel South...we left NY and went North to Canada. Still had a good time but many had not known and had to buy warmer clothes.
