Italian charm bracelet question

I followed a link to the DIS shop out of curiosity in regards to the Italian charm bracelets and I was amazed to see the prices. Can someone tell me what they are made out of to make them so expensive. I have heard they are very popular in the US and I know I see them for sale here in Italy now, but the prices are just so different, I am curious. (Mind you I have never seen the Disney charms here, but many other types.) Are they sterling silver or something else?

I get mine at funtofine.com -- the ones they sell are sterling silver and 18K gold accents. Considering this, I still think that they have VERY reasonable prices. Check out their mickey head started bracelet -- it is simply adorable!

Edited to change that there charms are 18k gold and not 10k.

The more expensive ones are 18k gold. I stumbled upon this site, this is by far the cheapest I have seen the 18k gold ones anywhere.

I work for a jewelry wholesale company and the Italian charms we have are all stainless steel w/gold plated accents. Even so, I still think ours are a bit expensive. But, Italian jewelry (if it's actually from Italy) is usually overpriced - no offense, it just has to do with labor costs and such. In my opinion, the Italian charms are EXTREMELY difficult to take apart/put together (but maybe that's because I do dozens at a time ) and I'd choose my regular charm bracelet over them any day.

OOPS! Forgot to answer the OP's question.

I'm a novice at the Italian charm thing. There are less expensive ones out there. The company that makes the Disney ones has an exclusive license. They tell me it is a high-quality charm. Similar to Nominations, if you are familiar with that line.

So high-quality + Disney license = a higher-priced charm.

I also have GREAT difficulty attaching those charms! But the ladies at our brick-and-mortars tell me it's easy once you get the hang of it!
