As far as the orthodontist goes...both Dan and Jonah have had palate expanders. Dan's was removable ( kind of like a retainer) and he could take it out for meals. Jonah's is cemented in his mouth. We did the key turning for both of them. Neither boy complained that the process was painful. Getting used to the device in their mouths was the hardest part. I know everyone is different, but I thought I'd at least pass along our experience!

LOVE EPCOT! And going during F&G Fest is the best! I hope you get to ride Test Track. I know my boys would be disappointed if they missed that one!

I am considering writing a trip report on the Community Board. Not sure yet, but if I do, I will definitely let you know!

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the palate expanders! They were able to get an impression today so it looks like Alex is going to get one. He was gagging so bad when they were just trying out the trays in his mouth that they worried they wouldn't be able to get an impression. But we took a tray home to practice & he did great today.

Epcot is so nice in the spring! I'll take lots of pictures.

I have the windows wide and spring cleaning well under way. I love opening the windows in my youngest son's room on days like this. He is alergic to grass so in the summer we don't do that much!

Disney break is over! back to chase the cob webs away and shampoo a rug!

I had windows cracked this morning but when I got home it was almost 70 so I opened up a bunch - they're wide open!

We have rain today, but yesterday was gorgeous. It was close to 70 degrees and we, too had the windows up airing out the house.

Great plans for Epcot! I think your boys will like the American Adventure. Jeremy loves it.

Have you seen the F&G pictures for this year? I saw some this morning. I was giddy with excitement. This will be our first time there. I can hardly wait.

I think it's supposed to rain/snow tonight then be cold again tomorrow before another warm up starting Sunday. It looks like 50s all next week!

OMG!!! WHAAAAAT? This is going to be very very bad, I am so glad that you let me know. He is going to be so mad. Both my boys take Melatonin to sleep, but on vacation it seems like the dose is not enough for Luke, he gets very restless. Thinking of just upping the amount just for those 9 nights. Enjoy the weather....

I know! I was so worried when we first heard the news but luckily Alex likes the new one just as much.

You could definitely up the melatonin during vacation if it helps. We bring all the comforts of home (rain machine being the most important) and that helps a lot. We are usually in a 2BR villa so the boys each have their own bed. It was a little more complicated in the 1BR villa at BWV because the boys shared the sleeper sofa but they still slept well. We'll be in a regular room at BC for our first few nights so hopefully the swimming, sun & parks will tire them out enough to be able to sleep OK with all of us in the same room.

It is so warm today!!! It was 50 degrees at 8am!!! It's 65 now. I love spring I like it even more when it comes early
I am trying to do some spring cleaning today not too much fun. I opened some windows too.
My DS14 has braces but never had that key turning thing. His expander was "head gear" he had to wear around his head that attached to his braces- sounds so weird describing it at night. I hope it works out for Alex- poor thing. My son is getting them off this year but DS10 will be getting them soon.

We loved Teppan Edo and Le Cellier. This yr. we're eating at Le Chefs (one of our faves) and Via Napoli (first time)

I agree! Gorgeous day!! I should be doing spring cleaning! Airing out the house & washing Zach's sheets will have to do. I suppose I could clean the windows behind our kitchen sink - they're always filthy with water splashes!

I'm sure Zach will be in line for braces around the time Alex gets his off! He already has a space maintainer. Alex will be getting his expander right after we get back from our trip. They spread out the appointments so we can do the preliminary stuff before he goes to camp & insert the actual expander after camp & our vacation.

The F&G theme is "Where Epcot spring to life". Zach loves the KP missions - they take about 30 minutes.

We ate at Les Chefs last spring. It was good & fun to see Remy. I loved Via Napoli when I went there with my friend Laura in Oct 2010. I've wanted to go back but I don't think Alex would eat anything on the menu. I think you'll like it.

What a beautiful day!! This type of weather gives me Spring Fever big time!!!

I have been through the braces with Cody. He had them on for like 4 years. Before each visit to the orthodontist to get them tightened I would give him an Advil to try to keep ahead of the pain. It seemed to work for him. Good luck with that. Thank goodness they have payment plans.

I did not realize Disney does not have the Itzakadoozie any more! I even enjoyed one once in a while.

Yikes - 4 years of braces! Alex should only need them for about 20-24 months. The palate expander is the main thing he needs. Hopefully he'll avoid having to have two teeth removed but we'll see...

No more Itzakadoozies... very sad! The new one tastes similar but doesn't look as fun.

On Sunday we went to see The Lorax, I broke a tooth! It's just a little piece that broke off one of my molars, but I have to go see the dentist this morning to get it fixed. Hopefully it's just a minor repair.

Then I get to take Alex to the orthodontist. He needs braces but we're moving in baby steps. He couldn't even get the empty tray in his mouth last week (that they use for impressions) but we took one home to practice & I think he might be able to do it for the orthodonotist today! Plus they are going to put in a couple spacers for him to get used to things in his teeth. We'll see how it goes. I want to hold off until May to get the actual braces because of his trip to environmental camp & our Disney trip. He's supposed to have a palet expander first (if they can get accurate impressions), which involves turning a key every night for a couple weeks and can be very painful. We definitely don't want to start that right now.

My tooth was totally fine - I could feel it with my tongue but couldn't tell how bad it was. The dentist just smoothed out the little spot that broke. It wasn't even bad enough to have to fill it!

Alex did great at the ortho! I'm glad the timing is working out to wait until after our trip.

Today is going to be a beautiful day here in southern NH! It was already warm out when I took the boys to school this morning. The snow is melting quickly & we have bulbs popping up through the ground. It's only in the low 50s but I opened a window! The cat loves to sit in that window & it will help air things about around here. It should get up into the low-mid 60s later on today.

My cat sits in the window, too, and wishes he could go out and chase birds and squirrels. He's such a weenie, though - they would not be a bit afraid of him. He'd be the one running back in the house!

I am standing there right now. I am going to take a picture of the artist scene across the water, and then I am ready to walk around World Showcase.

This week has been turned upside down with a few crazy things...

First, Alex passed a kidney stone on Sunday! We had no idea he had kidney stones & weren't even sure that it was one. We took him to the doctor (which is always complicated on a Sunday). I wasn't really freaked out until she ordered a urinalysis, bloodwork & an ultrasound! Then told us to call the pediatric urologist at Boston Children's Hospital first thing Monday morning! We dealt with the bloodwork on Sunday - had to go to the local hospital since all of the labs were closed. He had the ultrasound yesterday & we are seeing the pediatric urologist tomorrow. So far we have learned that the stone was calcium oxilate & he has a low level of the hormone that regulates calcium. He was also taking a calcium supplement, which we have stopped. His ultrasound shows more stones. So we'll see what the urologist says tomorrow. Most likely we'll be sent to an endocrinologist (sp?) to address the hormone issue. We also need to see the nutritionist again. She used to come to the house every 6-12 months but hasn't come in a while. We may also need to get back into Occupational Therapy to deal with Alex's limited diet and issues with certain textures of food. Luckily he's been more open to trying some new foods... but I haven't pushed him too hard so the new foods haven't been too exotic. He ate a piece of green pepper the other day, started eating dry cheerios again (he used to love them when he was a toddler but stopped eating then when he was on a gluten free diet, then never wanted to eat them again), ate some cucumbers (used to like, but then stopped eating them a while back).

Luckily he was in very little pain when he passed the stone. It lasted all of five minutes then he was good to go again. He either has a really high threshold for pain or it was a stealth kidney stone! I'm most worried about his trip to environmental camp with his class, and of course, our trip. His doctor said not to change any plans so that's good. Alex is pretty worried about another stone. Even though it was only five minutes, it really hurt.

The next this was yesterday. A couple people in one of the facebook groups I belong to, posted news that the slide & "part" of the pool at Stormalong Bay/Beach Club will be closed for two weeks 4/9-4/23! I freaked out! I inquired with the Beach Club concierge IPO and they confirmed the information this morning. I was really upset, Tim was really mad and we started trying to figure out if we should/could move to another resort. After going back and forth, I THINK we have decided to stay at Beach Club. All of our plans revolve around being in that location. We are planning DHS & Epcot for two of the days and the other two are resort days, with some time at the Boardwalk too. The good news is that we'll be able to use the pool at the Boardwalk. The kids LOVED staying there & the pool was a major reason. Even without the slide, SAB is still an amazing pool. I'm crossing my fingers that they finish up the emergency repair ahead of schedule. Please send pixie dust our way!!

And the last thing, which was minor in comparison to the other problems, was that Zach was home sick today. He's been complaining of belly pain, but it comes and goes. I'm not sure what's going on with him but we let him stay home. The trouble was that I had a special ed meeting at school this morning, then my annual physical (which is almost impossible to reschedule). Luckily my mom was off from work today so she came over and hung out with a grumpy Zach. Hopefully he won't give us any trouble tomorrow morning because I need to take Alex to his appointment with the urologist. Gramma Nancy is on call!

So the short story is that my week has been turned upside down! Luckily it wasn't a big work week for me. I was planning to post my Animal Kingdom/5 weeks to go update tomorrow but it may have to wait until the weekend... which is just as busy with a swim meet both days.

Oh I can't wait until spring break! Only 36 days to go!!

Amy after your last email I was thinking that maybe they will be finished with the refurb early (fingers crossed)! I figured we would use whatever part of the pool this is open. It really does irk me though that the only other time we stayed there (May 2010) they had the slide closed also. It did not bother me then as it was Jeff & I & my boys are adults now so they will not use the slide but like I mentioned to you in my email that for the families that have little ones it really stinks!! You pay big bucks to stay there & one of the biggest reasons is that wonderful pool!! Lets hope they get done quickly!!

Oh my gosh poor Alex I hope he passes the other stones without too much pain. Poor kid. My DH passed one in the middle of the night years ago & passed out! He is not at all good with pain & just passes out when in pain but from what I hear it is soooo painful. Let us know how he makes out with it. They say drink lots & lots of water. My DH has not had anymore since that time. He has been lucky.

And I hope Zach feels better.

Oh no, Amy! Poor Alex! Kidney stones are NOT fun.

This is probably TMI but my first symptom was some lower abdominal pain and then some blood when I went to the bathroom. They doctor did a urinalysis b/c he thought it was a UTI but it came back negative, so he sent me away with antibiotics and sent out the sample for a more thorough inspection. That also showed no infection but he still ruled it as an infection. I called back a couple of days later b/c I was having some pain in my upper abdomen and he ordered a CT scan. I knew it was a kidney stone b/c the nurse left the room for one of the CT scan images and came back and said, "You said your dad had kidney stones, how did he get rid of them?" That didn't stop me from worrying, though. Once it was confirmed, I was sent to a urologist and he and I decided that b/c the pain wasn't unbearable we'd try to let it pass on it's own. I had some horrible pain in my left kidney shortly after that and I was prescribed a medicine that sometimes help to pass it but it didn't work. Finally, the doctor said I could have the procedure to blast it. I did that and then about 5 days later, I felt the most pain I've ever felt. I cried for about two hours and after two pain pills and five hours it went away. Three days later, a piece of the stone came out. It was a big piece, too! I had an analysis done of the stone and also a 24 hour urine collection and my stone was also calcium oxilate and my Ph levels were high as was my calcium but the doctor said for me not to avoid calcium b/c he thinks that the stones start from the oxilates and then the calcium causes them to grow. I was told to drink lots of water with fresh lime/lemon and to decrease my consumption of food with oxilates (peanuts, soybeans, blackberries, chocolate, etc.). Long story short, there are ways to help prevent them but some people are just prone to get them. I just happen to have a family history (thanks, dad!).

That's a bummer about SAB but I'm sure you'll be able to enjoy the boardwalk. I'd be upset, though, too if one of the main reasons for booking that resort was the pool area.

So sorry that Alex has had to go through all this. It is not fun at all. The food issues we TOTALLY get! We had years of visits to the Nutritionist too, weekly, then monthly for years. OT too, for lots of things, but we are so done with it all. He knows now what he can do physically to help himself when feeling "not right", but when it comes to food issues we have decided to not push anymore. Once we got past the point of the Dr's wanting to put a feeding tube we were clear. Good Luck and if you have any questions or want to chat more about it go ahead! Hope things turn around this week, and that slide better be open for your boys!!!!!!! Good to know that the boardwalk slide is good. We are thinking of doing Boardwalk April 2013

I know what you mean... we've wanted to stay there since we went to dinner at Yachtsman in 2007! We finally make it happen & the slide is closed! I understand emergency repairs happen, but it's just figures it's while we are there! Glad to hear you are sticking with BC too!

I remember when you posted about your kidney stones... Not TMI - thanks for sharing! Alex's stone was 1/4 inch long! Probably about 1/8 inch wide. .035 grams if that means anything to you.

That's interesting about the oxilates... nobody has mentioned anything about that, but we just got those results back yesterday. Alex lives on peanut butter! He has a PB sandwich for lunch every day. Hmmmm...

Sooooo ready for vacation!! But now I don't want it to come too quickly so we can get Alex's kidney issues worked out before we go.

I agree that the kids will have fun no matter what pool they swim in! And maybe it's a blessing that the slide is closed - I don't like that they have to cross over the sidewalk to go to the slide. I'm a little bummed that the whirly bubbley stuff will be closed. I'm not even sure what it's all about but I've heard it's cool.

Alex has always had food issues - nothing anywhere near needing a feeding tube though! He was picky from the start - but it got worse after he came off the gluten/dairy free diet. He was on the diet for 3 years & when he was able to start eating regular food again, he didn't want to. The diet definitely helped but it also contributed to his pickiness!

Luckily we've been through years of OT too so we know who to go to. I'm not sure if she'll work with him or send us to one of her co-workers who specializes in food issues.

The Boardwalk pool is great - as long as nobody has a fear of clowns! Zach thought he'd be scared of the clown, but he was totally fine.

I guess there has been some sort of issue at SAB for a few weeks. An area near the pool has been dug up & blocked off. I'm guessing this is the same problem & they have decided they actually need to close the pool to get it fixed. I assume they are waiting until after Easter due to crowds. I thought the week right after Easter would be just as busy, but maybe not? Or maybe it has nothing to do with that & they are waiting for parts or something?? Poor Alex! I've had kidney stones on more than one occasion and they are the WORST! I'm glad he wasn't in too much pain for too long.

Sorry to hear about the pool issue. I'm glad that they boys like the alternative pool and you don't have to change plans. That would really throw a wrench in your planning. Pixie dust coming your way for an early finish and an open slide at SAB!
