It pays to check and recheck your rates!

I already got a great rate from Alamo - $130.85 for a mid-size car for 9 days. But as a cheap, penny-pinching, money-grubbing skinflint, I constantly re-check my car and plane rates to see if I can weasel a few extra bucks. Well, I tried today, and my rate dropped to an unbelievable $123.07!

I found that trying to re-book my existing reservation didn't work, so I had to book a whole new reservation, using the same codes and coupons, and only after I had the new one did I cancel the old one.

Considering that the first ressie I made with Alamo was $167.20, I've knocked it down over $44 just by using different combinations of coupons. So check your rates after you book - you never know when you might save a few bucks!

Did that include insurance? If not, I got a weeks rental from National (following the advice from this board) and it was $96.87 including tax & no insurance. If you are interested in checking it out I can tell you what I did.

I have done the same thing with my Alamo reservation! My rate now is over $30.00 less than it was when I started! It really does pay to keep checking!

No, it doesn't include insurace (I am fully covered so I always decline the additional insurance, which is kind of a racket from rental car companies, anyway), but it does include:

Concession Fee Recov Chrg 9.8% (I have no idea what this is, probably the fee for being an in-terminal company)
FL Schrg/tire Bat 2.05 Usd/day (Again, no clue)
License Recoupment Fee .49 Usd/day (What the heck is this?)
State Tax 6.5% (Finally something I understand!)

OMG, how did you do that? Great job! Can the coupon codes be shared or were they from an entertainment book or something else?

I haven't spent a lot of time yet searching for low rates, since we still have 3 months to go, but when I did a quick search, my 11 days (no insurance) for a mid-size car was approx $330. Now like I said, that was just a quick search, no coupons or anything, just to give me a baseline to go by. Care to share where your discounts came from? Thanks!

Try National. Use contract ID 6600330 (don't need anything for this) and entertainment coupon code 10009123 (need the entertainment card for this; you can probably buy one right now for about $15). That coupon works on intermediate size or bigger.

Can you post what combination of codes you used for Alamo? Also, with Alamo do you have to stand in line at MCO or can you go to a garage like you can do with National?

I used a contract ID and rate code from BJ membership warehouse, and a $20 off coupon from Sams Club membership warehouse.

With Alamo you still have to stand in a line, but they do have the Quicksilver Club that lets you go to a special, smaller line.
