to lump WDW and the Marvel purchase together.

WDW is a separate company which reports to Disney Corp. They have their own budget and have their own sales and cost expectations.

Disney Corp purchased Marvel. The Disney Corp will use Disney Synergy to make both companies feed off of each other for the good of Disney overall.

Two completely separate items.

Pretty much like Dreams Unlimited Travel and Dreams Villas. Dreams Unlimited Travel did not purchase any homes to rent, Dreams Villas did. You use the podcast (at times) to advertise Dreams Villas. Only thing it has in common is John and Kevin. If Dreams Villas goes out and purchases a hotel should Dreams Unlimited Travel be talked about in the same way WDW and Marvel are being talked about? No. They are separate.

WDW did not purchase Marvel. Your comments should be pointed towards Disney Corp. Maybe a clarification should be made in the next podcast.

Thanks!!!!!:goodvibes

I apologize, I corrected the company names.

Reason for listening, within the last few weeks my father had a stroke, he is in a hospital 2 hours from my home. I load up my mp3 player to have something to listen to during the long drives.

You might find some comfort here.

I sure do.

I am sorry to hear about your father.

OK - let me address the content of the original post.

Comparing the WDW/Disney Corporate relationsip to the Dreams Unlimited Travel/Dreams Villas relationship is not accurate and here's why...

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts (WDW) is a division of the Walt Disney Company. Along with other divisions (movies, TV, music, etc) Parks and Resorts has its own budget and governence but their revenue is funneled into the parent company - The Walt Disney Company. At the end of the fiscal year the Walt Disney Company takes all profits and losses from all divisions and posts those as one corporate financial statement. That's where you as a stock holder get your dividend, from the combined revenue of the company - not just from WDW. So all decisions at all levels and within all divisions effect all aspects of the company from a fiscal standpoint.

Dreams Villas of Orlando is it's own company. It is not a division of Dreams Unlimited Travel. Nothing Dreams Villas of Orlando does will fiscally influence Dreams Unlimited Travel. There is no direct corporate or fiscal link between the two companies. So if Dreams Villas buys a hotel it has no influence on the fiscal impact on Dreams Unlimited Travel.

I beleive it is completely appropriate and fair to discuss things like increased park admission and parking at a theme park in the Parks and Resort division in relationship to the parent company spending billions on a corporate buy-out. The two are not mutually exclusive especially when you have a company like Disney that prides itself on the synergy and corporate branding among all it's business units. If people perceive a disconnect in the raising of prices by one division and the spending of billions by another it is a perfectly legitimate connection to make.

Whether or not the Marvel purchase will be good for Disney or not, time will tell.

hmmm . . . when will you start taking reservations?
This is what I just love about the podcast boards. John has a detailed explanation with examples about the differences between Dreams Villas of Orlando and Dreams Unlimited Travel vs WDW and Disney Corporate and the only thing we see is the one line:
So if Dreams Villas buys a hotel......

...and of course we think, this would be a fabulous idea! Can you imagine the DIS meets we could have there! And DAP would then we no issue because we would all be staying at one hotel, right? A fabulous idea, really.

Sorry to hear about your dad Rich.

I think there was a post a little while back addressing the way in which you post and how it comes across. I know it may feel like you get piled on here sometimes but I think it is because the way in which you post reads seems a bit more confrontational than it has to be.

The crux of your argument I do agree with. I feel the Marvel purchase was a distribution deal and had nothing to do with the parks. The characters may bleed into that parks, but I don't think that was the reason for the purchase. Basically Marvel is a company that holds a lot of properties but has no distribution channel. Many of their characters are as known in popular culture as Disney's characters. Disney, however, has distribution channels. When Marvel has wanted to distribute their property (ie: Make a movie or develop a series) they had to strike deals with other studios. They had no exclusivity deals, so if studio one purchased Marvel property one and studio two purchased Marvel property two those two studios were competing against each other while distributing Marvel's content. Without getting into a long explanation as to why, this could actually lessen the value of the property Marvel is trying to sell.

Now, Disney owns the characters and owns the channel through which they will be distributed. They will have to wait out some existing contracts, much like they have been doing with the Muppets, but long term I think it will be a good deal. The park presence, if any, of Marvel will be a product of the fact that Disney now has the characters as opposed to Disney owning the characters for the reason of park presence.

The podcast is a podcast primarily about the parks, so it makes sense that they analyzed the purchase from a parks point of view. I see no reason to bring DU or the villas into the discussion.

Rich, I'm also sorry to hear about your dad. Best wishes with you and your family.

As for the Marvel deal, while I definitely think it's fair to talk about the connections within the company, I do think it's a bit short-sighted, although very common, for people to say things along the lines of "why are there cutbacks in the parks when they spent $4 billion on marvel?" In such cases, the reality is that the parks are a portion of the business, and there is desire for that unit to have a certain level of profitability (agree with how they do it, or not, is another discussion).

Disney's acquisition of Marvel is a purchase of assets that are potentially very valuable and profitable. A direct comparison between the two decisions really isn't appropriate, in my opinion. Whether or not the marvel buy was a good decision remains to be seen, but is a separate discussion.
