with a windchill of 35 below. And they are having school.

Its official the superintendent is an idiot.

its 30 below here in southern wisconsin and my kids schools here in the city of beloit are delayed two hours, where most everywhere else it is closed for the day. i attend the local tech college which is about a fifteen minute drive or so and they are open today. i can't believe they would be open today, i will not be going in today though, its to cold and icy and i will not be risking my life for school. and i will be keeping my kids home all day today

I'm supposed to be helping at the school today but I just can't bring myself to send them in this cold. My oldest went, wouldn't even think of staying home. He likes winter though. :confused3

I tried sending the superintendent an email. I just ended up cussing him out so I deleted it. We have a history so and compliant from me probably won't be read anyway.

Well then, most of the superintendents in MN must be idiots since most of the schools are in session today. Several of the rural areas have a 2 hour late start but none of the metro schools are. It has to get a lot worse then this to call off school. I think the one year the governor called off all the schools the windchills were in the -65 range.

I was raised in ND. There was never a time when we had school off because of cold only.
Sorry you and the kids have to go out in this.

I'm gonna side with you - that's too cold for kids to stand out at the bus stop. I know in my area (Western New York) when the wind chill is that low schools are closed.

In fact, ours are closed today because of gusting winds (up to 60 mph), icy roads & cold temps. (mainly the winds though)

I'd keep them home and have hot chocolate and watch Disney movies. I'm THAT kind of parent though.

Yeah thats my problem. I grew up in Kansas. Weather like this? Town would of been shut down until summer.:lmao: Tim grew up in SD he loves this weather. Weirdo:rolleyes:

I grew up in Southern MN. They never ever cancelled school because of cold. And we still always took the bus. We just bundled up. I remember warnings of keeping all skin covered because it would freeze in 30 seconds.

Where in MN are you?

I'm out West of the twin cities in rural MN. We do have a 2 hr late start this morning because of the cold/wind chills. I would actually be surprised if they close the school completely.

I grew up in St. Paul and I never had the schools closed because of cold weather, they barely closed when it was even snowing a lot :rotfl:

I did see on WCCO that Stillwater area schools are 2 hrs late today. That is the only Metro area schools I've seen so far.

Bundle up and stay warm!!!

That is because a lot of the Stillwater district is still pretty rural--Marine, Afton, Lakeland are all in Stillwater's district AND the kids have to walk to school if they are a mile from school in elementary and 2 miles secondary.

We were talking about this at work. I had a paper route and delivered when it was 80 below wind chill in the 80's. It built character. I'm loaded with the stuff.

Yeah, you're loaded with something but it aint character:rolleyes1 Kejoda...I think you should call the superintendent, get his wife on the phone and yell at her:rotfl:

We have never been close up here in VT because of cold, unless the furnace was broken at the school or something. I don't really have a problem with it because the kids will be outside for only a short amount of time, and won't be going outside for recess. If I was that worried about them being in the cold waiting for the bus, I would find some way to take them to school.

Lots of times when it is that cold, the busses won't start - which leaves kids standing outside for a long time. A few weeks ago that happened, and someone from the school or the bus garage actually called our house to let us know about the problem.

I'm in NE WI and pretty much all the schools are closed around here...not b/c of the cold (-10 temps) or wind (-40 wind chill) but b/c of the ice on the roads.

It just isn't safe for the busses to be out when the roads are that dangerous.

And you can always choose to keep your kids home, even though there may be school.

I've done it once and the school completely understood. They were fine with it. :goodvibes

It was -20 here in the north metro when my husband got up, -18 now. We are on a 2 hour late start. I've never really understood why they think it will be any better between 7 am and 9 am, but whatever. I do remember the year they closed all schools, you are right the windchills that day were in the -65 range.

I guess it doesn't bother me that much that they have to go. As long as they stay inside and the busses run on time so they don't have to wait extra long, they'll be ok.

I grew up in Michigan, I remember snow days, but not because it was cold. What good is a two hour delay going to do if they aren't removing snow??? The thought of even stepping outside to let the dog out in that kind of cold is chilling me right now. I headed south in 1985, told my DH that I would move more south, or more east, but NOT north or west..we are in Savannah, now, getting closer to Orlando with every move.:goodvibes

Yeah, I wouldn't close schools either for this if I were superintendant. It's cold but not that cold. Put an extra layer on the kids. 2 pairs of mittens. I walked to school in much worse. I have waited 40+ minutes for busses in this and worse. As long as you are dressed appropriately, its not a big deal. I still haven't busted out MY winter jacket.
