I'm kind of blown away. What a great message. I know it focuses on one particular group, but honestly its message could easily be applied to any marginalized or bullied population.

I'm so happy by how many celebrities, companies, VIP, have been stepping out to make these kinds of videos. Regardless of which group these videos are directed at, you're right, it can be applied to anyone who's been bullied or is even just feeling down.

I was hoping it was that kind of different.

I know what you mean, while a great message it would be great to have incorporated more ways fo being "different". My DD did not get bullied in HS nor is she a lesbian, however she did endure being "odd" as an artist and now attends college majoring in computer animation, and FINALLY feels like she has found her world of peers just like her...and PIXAR is at her school all the time so I thought maybe the message would encompass more. However, maybe /hopefully if this message is successful than they will make more!

Not to take away from what you're daughter went through but I think there's a big difference between enduring being "odd" as an artist and being gay. I remember in high school there were a couple of boys that, at the time, were suspected of being gay and what they went through at the hand of many other kids was horrific. I can't imagine how alone, and scared they must have felt. There were other kids who were bullied, but the gay kids were ALWAYS bullied - even the kids who were bullied would make fun of the gay kids.

I think the "It gets better" campaign is fantastic, and I think it touches many people, not just those who are bullied and not just those who are gay. But it was started by a gay couple to try and help gay kids who go through especially challenging times while in school. I don't think we should take it away from them to make it all inclusive to anyone who might feel different.

It is that kind of different. While it was definitely about and for one particular segment of society, the message is quite clear...

Surround yourself with like minded, supporting people (and it may take a while to find them, but they are out there), and be strong. Don't give up hope...not in yourself, not in the rest of the world. Something great is out there waiting for you.

There certainly are other types of kids who are bullied, and every one of them needs to know that it will get better. But this particular project was started in response to the tragic loss of so many of our gay youth who were being harassed and brutalized by their peers to the point of taking their own lives. There's a difference between kids feeling "different" and maybe being teased for it and kids who are tormented and (sometimes brutally) harassed by classmates. It goes beyond teasing for these kids, and it seems that our society (even our government) has made it OK. We're relentlessly told that we're wrong and sick and disgusting for just being who we are. So it's more than just being "different" for gay youth.

Way to go, Pixar!!

I agree, maybe it is the intro, the way she speaks of a variety of differences that led me to think it was a more multi-faceted awareness PSA....no groans or issues with it, guess it just resonated or touched areas that we have dealt with that others get grief for as well, meaning gays and non-gays alike who have struggles. In other words, it can affect abroader audience and at the beginning it does, so that I guess is a win-win.
