It’s Not Christmas Till We Visit The Mouse! Dec. 2006

I know I have probably said this before, but we always got lost in AK. We always ended up in the exit of KRR. It didn't matter what side of the park we were on, we always ended up on that darn bridge.

Loved the latest installment. I did miss your wonderful pictures though. I can't really complain because I am not a picture kind of person. When and if I ever do my TR, there won't be many. :sad2: That is kind of why I haven't done it because they are so much better with photos. Plus I am afraid no one would read it, and how embarrassing would that be.

Can't wait to hear about the Boardwalk!

Okay, I really want to read this whole TR. I tried to make it available offline so maybe I can read it on our all night drive to disney tomorrow!

Great job, V! Been waiting for this one!!! I was very curious about Boma and you did not disappoint!

Pal spent his day in the confines of Gramma’s locked suitcase.
Heh, heh.....poor pal. You know I debated over pal. Emily really wanted one but I guess as Disneyland Mama would say....not worth the cheddar?
We’d all been to AKL before, either for an overnight stay or dinner at Jiko, but the lobby never fails to impress.........The subdued lighting, rich woods and flowing waters make me feel so relaxed!
I AM going to see this next time. Everyone says how beautiful it is. How is Jiko? BTW?
Which brings us to the dinner, itself. One word: YUUUMMMY!!!!! All those rave DIS reviews? Right on target.
GREAT! It's on my list. Just because you said so. I trust you but hope the buffet nazis are not dining there when I'm there. ;)
And he was a really, really, REALLY good boy. He finished first, of course, but busied himself looking around the restaurant and commenting on things, and by looking through a little booklet he got at AK. Made MommaV proud!
That is so sweet. Why are we so surprised when they are actually good?
The Buffet Nazis probably wound up sitting in front of the Mean Loud Lady later on. You know – Karma and all.
Would serve them right. ;)
Did someone sprinkle my car with pixie dust when I wasn’t looking??
That was me. pixiedust: Again...smart move to take the car. Glad you had good parking vibes. We never had trouble finding a parking space at POR.
This was to be our final night at POR, and we were sad. Crazy, isn’t it? The next night, we’d be sleeping with the upper crust at the Boardwalk, yet we’d have gladly stayed right where we were. And we should have. Really.
Hmmm....anxious to hear how you liked the Boardwalk.
Up next: What is that SMELL??????:scared:
I don't like the sound of that.

HA HA...DMama - I'm first this time!!:cool1:

Ok, now I'm gonna go read it!!!:rotfl:
Sorry, I'm with DL_Mama on this one...:rolleyes1

I just shake my head at those people. You are so right about charma. They'll be the ones waiting in a long line somewhere and you'll just fly by them with your fast pass, right?
And don't think I wasn't watching for them the next few days! :rotfl:
Yep - another GREAT installment! What a fabulous story-teller you are!

Gotta be honest...I'm missing the pictures though... :confused3
Thank you!! I know - I always come back and think "Why didn't I take more pics?" But I always feel like I'm taking too many when I'm there. Someday I'll get it right...

When we had Boma for dinner, we also checked out the pool. Funny thing is Waldo said it looked dirty. I told him it's the themeing (sp?), you know to look like it's a real watering hole in the Savannah. None doing... refused to believe me and said, I wouldn't swim in it. :confused3
I have to admit, I think I'd have a hard time getting past the look of it, too. It looks like maybe we could all use a round of typhoid and malaria shots before getting in. :scared:

The smell is DH's bathroom. Gross. Why are men gross?:scared:
:rotfl2:

I just LOVE Animal Kingdom Lodge! I could sit in that lobby forever! :cloud9: Boma is one of our favorite restaurants, too! But, I have to ask, WHY WHY WHY didn't you get a press pot of Kenyan AA coffee??? You could have saved yourself from the "Nescacrap" and had one of the best coffees on property! :sad2:
I know - clearly, I wasn't thinking right. And I'm sure the wine flight had nothing to do with it.:rolleyes1 Actually, I needed decaf and our server was pretty rushed, so it was jsut easier to ask for a cup of decaf then to ask if the press pot could be decaffeinated.
P.S. Hey - are you callin' me crusty? I love my BWV! :goodvibes (or did you mean Boardwalk Inn? - if so, then that's OK.)
Nope, no name calling here! ;) Yes, we're talking BWI. Just wait till you hear...
Can't wait to hear about the Boardwalk. That's one of those places I could simply move in to.
Ummm.... then you may not want to read what's coming next! :scared1:
I am totally hooked on your TR, can't wait to keep reading!!!!!!!!
Wow, thanks! Glad to have you with us!

Can't wait to hear about the Boardwalk!
LOL, I always wind up in Dinoland trying to find the exit! Glad I'm not alone...
I'll read your TR! Get crackin missy ;)

Okay, I really want to read this whole TR. I tried to make it available offline so maybe I can read it on our all night drive to disney tomorrow!
OOO OOO, that'll be like I'm going with you to the Happy Place!!! Have a fantastic time, and tell us all about it when you get back!

Heh, heh.....poor pal. You know I debated over pal. Emily really wanted one but I guess as Disneyland Mama would say....not worth the cheddar?
Not worth the mozzarella, either. Unless you know nothing about Disney.
I AM going to see this next time. Everyone says how beautiful it is. How is Jiko? BTW?
It's been a few years since I last ate there, but it was extraordinary! I was so impressed with the African fusions the chef put together and the sea bass I had was out of this world. All accompanied by the most amazing wine list... I'll go back for sure!:thumbsup2
That was me. pixiedust:
Why, thank you so much!
Hmmm....anxious to hear how you liked the Boardwalk.
I don't like the sound of that.
Heh heh heh....

"Nescacrap" has me rolling!!!! :rotfl2:

We too looooved Boma! Yummy stuff! Did you have the butternut squash soup? And I totally agree with you about that bread pudding!!! SO GOOD!

Mmmm . . . so looking forward to Boma!!! So glad I'm reading your TR. I would proabably have been one of those in the meat line!!! I would say I'm anxiously awaiting your next installment, but I'm not sure I want to know what the smell is. LOL!

So....you're wondering where I am, eh??? I'm not sure if you know this or not, but I've already read ALL YOUR STUFF so far...how about something new from YOU????:rolleyes1

Day 3, Sunday Dec. 2
The day dawned fresh and pretty once more at POR and it was a most bittersweet goodbye as we packed the car up and headed out of the Bayou for some seaside revelry.

The plan for the day had been an extra-early wake p so as to check in to the Boardwalk Inn and get to MGM close to park opening. The plan was an utter failure. Gramma was moving slow. Leo was moving slow. Traffic at the BWI was moving slow. It was soon apparent that we would not be doing as much at MGM as I’d have liked. Much to my surprise, however, I wasn’t completely freaking out and more or less decided we’d just see how long it took to check in and then decide if we wanted to bother bringing luggage in or just head over to MGM.

The CM checking me in was pleasant, though not very personable. She reiterated the requests I’d made – a room on the 3rd floor or higher, near the lobby – and handed over the keys. OH BOY, I was finally an actual guest at the Boardwalk!

ASIDE: I’ve probably spent more time at the BWI than any other resort. But, until this trip, never overnight. First off, flame away, but we were THOSE people. When my not-so-DexH and I had Epcot After 4pm Annual Passes, we regularly parked at the Boardwalk to avoid paying for parking. (Gasp!) When we upgraded to the FL Seasonal Passes, we still parked there to avoid the parking toll. (Horror!) Secondly, the Boardwalk happens to be the point of entry to Atlantic Dance Hall. Many years ago, not-so-DexH and I stumbled into Atlantic Dance and found a whole lot of kids our age swing dancing to a live band. We were instantly smitten and, upon our return home, took lessons so we could dance like that, too. We became part of an amazing dance scene that included our home region as well as that of Orlando and came back to dance at ADH too many times to count. I still dance and count amongst my dear friends quite a few people I met thanks to that chance first visit to Atlantic Dance Hall. ADH is no longer a swing dance venue, I’m sad to say, but the memories live on and I had to get a picture with my beloved dance hall!

I rounded up Gramma and Leo, handed over the car to a valet and the luggage to bell services and we set out to find our room. The first thing we found was that it was on the 3rd floor, but it was no where near the lobby. In fact, it was the last room at the end of the hallway. Oh well. Can’t win ‘em all, right? We were at the BWI – that’s a DELUXE resort baby! – what could be wrong?

We walked into the room and within seconds, my nose was twitching. There was a distinctly perfumy scent in the room. I’m not good with flowery, perfumy scents thanks to my allergies, but we figured the room had just been cleaned and housekeeping probably sprayed some kind of air freshener, which would go away in a short while.

We checked out the room while we waited for our luggage to arrive. I wasn’t real impressed with anything. The wallpaper was peeling at most seams and the décor just wasn’t doing much for me. I opened the sheers to check out our “balcony” and found two disturbing things: 1. Only 1.75 people could fit out there, standing; and B. the wall area between the window and French door was so wet it was literally crumbling where I touched it. I shut the curtains back over it, hoping to erase the sight from my mind and we headed out for some fun at MGM.

Have you taken the boat from the BWI to MGM? It takes forever! Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice little journey, if you’re not in a hurry.

We were in a hurry and arrived at the MGM dock a mere 2 minutes before our ADR at the Sci Fi Dine In. The park was pretty busy and, by the time we made it to the Sci Fi, we were late. But we were seated within 5 minutes, so maybe it pays to be a tad late. :cool1:

Lunch was pretty fun! My BBQ chicken sandwich was fairly atrocious, but Gramma’s Reuben was yummy and Leo enjoyed his pita pizza sans chicken. Most of all, he totally dug eating lunch in a car, watching monster movies.
317284712_8b9c0b0ab4.jpg

He was completely engrossed and I don’t think he spoke more than two words the whole time! I’m not in any rush to go back, but I’m glad we went.

As charmed and pixie dusted as our previous days had been, this day was definitely not. Our mojo was way, way off that day. If we got in line for Little Mermaid, we’d miss seeing Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater. If we went to see them, we’d miss the Power Rangers. Leo was whiny and having a hard time making decisions. Gramma was tired and not participating in any conversation I attempted to start. :sad2: In the end, we rode Star Tours. That’s it. Oh, and Leo got a light saber. Notice the color? That’s my boy!

We took the 3 hour cruise back to the BWI with the intent to rest a bit, then get ready for an evening at Epcot.

I unlocked the door and Leo walked in first.
“Mommy, what’s that smell?!?!”

OMG, the perfumy smell was overpowering. :scared1: It was like a hyacinth bomb went off in there. My lungs seized up and I was soon gasping for breath. I retreated to the hall, took a few puffs on my emergency inhaler and a crisis was averted. But we clearly could not stay in that room. Gramma was convinced it had to be an air freshener and looked around for something. Sure enough – there was a brand-spanking new gel air freshener installed behind the armoire.

Meanwhile, I was on the courtesy phone explaining to the front desk our problem. No worries – they were setting me up with a new room even as we spoke, just come on down and get the new keys.

It only took a few minutes at the front desk and, new keys in hand, we decided to get into the new room first, then go back for the luggage. Hey, Room #2 was much closer to the lobby – bonus! We opened the door, Gramma stepped inside…. And shook her head. No way. This non-smoking room reeked of smoke. ((sigh))

Back to the front desk we went. On my way, I saw a man in a Suit who asked if I was taken care of. Well, not really. The Suit listened as I explained what had transpired and he assured me this would be taken care of. I voiced my concern about the air freshener we found, and the Suit explained that they do not use them and deduced that a previous guest must have put in up. Really? Okay. It took a lot longer this time, and there was much discussion between the CM and another Suit about where to put us. Several times Suit 2 tried a room and the CM pointed out that that would be an upgrade.
Suit 2: “Oh, thanks for catching that! What’s their room category again?”

:confused3

Yes, this was really said in front of me. Several times. I was dying to say, “Listen, I’m not looking for an upgrade, but I want a room that doesn’t give me an asthma attack. If that means putting me in a room that’s valued higher than my AP discounted rate, so be it. Just get it done, already!” But, instead, I smiled my Disney smile and let them do their job.

An appropriate room was eventually found, and now skeptical, I insisted that I see (smell) the room before it was officially assigned. Gramma and an increasingly cranky Leo hung out in the lobby while the CM and I checked out Room #3. Can you guess? Yep, perfumy again. :sad2: Not as powerful as Room #1, but bad enough to start my lungs tightening.

Back to the front desk again. Suit 1 voices his concern that I’m allergic to the cleaning products they use and they use them at all the resorts. Uh huh, so why has this never happened before, and I’ve stayed at all but 3 of the WDW resorts? Suit 1 didn’t have an answer to that, but he did suggest that I mention my sensitivity the next time I make reservations so they can clean my room with non-chemical cleaners. Sure, whatever, thanks for the tip. To their credit, everyone was pleasant and seemed to want to fix the problem. They just weren’t understanding the problem. Finally, Suit 1 said they’d find a room “in the right category” that hadn’t been cleaned yet and have it cleaned with non-chemical cleaners. If that didn’t work, they’d see about moving us to another resort.

I should have just insisted on being moved to another resort at that point, but I just didn’t want to deal with moving yet again. I agreed to give this a try and we rested in the lobby another 20 minutes.

Suit 1 waved me over to bell services, where Jose was waiting to transfer our luggage to the new room. Jose was the absolute BEST. He insisted on showing us the room first, so we could make sure all was okay, then would go back to Room #1 for our luggage, either to bring to Room #4 or to our car, depending on the results. Thank you Jose, have a Magical day!:wizard:

Gramma entered first. Sniff, sniff, sniff… she thought it was okay! I entered and, though there was a faint scent of something floral, it wasn’t bad. And, it came with a towel animal. We’ll take it!
317284657_6fcd69f8f1.jpg

Back up to Room #1, Jose started to put in the key and stopped dead. His face said it all, but he also verbalized his shock – he could smell the air freshener through the door. As we were standing there in dismay, the housekeeping manager happened to walk by and Jose stopped him. Jose asked if they put air fresheners in the rooms…
Housekeeping manager: “Yeah, they’re behind every armoire.” I resisted the urge to call Suit 1 and say “I told you so!” When we got back to Room #4, we located the air freshener behind the armoire and noticed it was almost depleted. That’s why this room wasn’t so bad. We took the remaining gel out and left it on the porch outside.

After all that excitement, we barely had time to change before heading over to Epcot. But I still wasn’t freaking out. Because, after Epcot, I had BIG plans. Big, lime green plans.

Coming soon: Is that a pineapple or are you just happy to see me?

That's too bad about the room. You'd think that giving you an upgrade wouldn't have been an issue seeing how you had to change rooms and wait all that time. My DD's wouldn't have lasted as long as Leo. What a trooper! Hopefully your next day went a lot better. Can't wait to read the next installment, once again a "TV" worthy cliffhanger!! popcorn::

Ugh! What a yucky game of room roulette! I hate when I pay more for something and then it's not as nice. Hope the rest of your stay at BWI was better!

Well jeezaloo, why couldn't they just upgrade you? That's just sad, especially since the "suit" was going to upgrade you--the CM should have just let it be.
Leo's little face is just so adorable in the car at Sci-Fi! I hope the rest of the time goes well for you :) Thank you for another addition to your great TR!

You know, even though this is not the first time I've heard this tale with the hotel...still just shocks me, and I can't get past the whole "category" deal...:confused3 What's up with that? AP holders and Florida residents' money is as good as anyone else's and the fact that the crappy rooms seem to go to them (us) is unacceptable. And quite frankly, for the money they charge, to have rooms in that condition is unacceptable as well - I don't care who you are.

But anywhooo....let me just hop off my soap box here...

I've never been to the ADH...DH would have loved to go to some place like that!

Leo looks so cute in that car!! Michael was the same way...maybe said a couple of words, but just stared at the screen as he was putting his lunch in his mouth...

Hmmm...now that I think about it, it was a pleasant meal!! Cruella and Horace were actually pretty quiet as well!!! :rotfl2:

Ok, and now I absolutely can't wait for the next one! When you speak of me, and you will, be kind! :flower3:

I laughed so hard at that...Is that a pineapple or are you glad to see me - and no I'm not drunk right now, it just struck me funny!

Can't wait for more....popcorn::

OMG, V! I can totally understand your smelly issue! ;) DS & I both suffer from asthma and allergies. Perfume just kills my lungs.:crazy2: I have a hard time walking thru the perfume area of department stores. During the holidays, when they are "spritz" happy, fugettaboudit!
I'm glad you found a suitable room! Who knew they had the air fresheners? :confused3 Thanks for the info.

Love the photo of Leo watching the movie. Is he in the "zone" or what???:rotfl:

Okay, first I must state that ever since the whole "revamping" of the DIS, I've not been getting all my emails. This clearly is a problem for me because I had no idea of your latest installment. I stumbled upon it, and happy I did. Any one else having this problem?

And V, I am sorry your experience at BWI was what it was. I can only hope that it got better. I can't help but wonder WHY they need to use air fresheners in every room. Now I'm going to have to go around searching for plug-ins.

I'm sure hotels have reasons for putting people where they do, and their concern for putting people where they paid to be, but, and I stress but, to speak about it in front of you like you are some cheap skate looking for something for nothing is just wrong. That's how I took the situation.

For Matt's allergies they did offer me a special cleaning which I never got and the only difference is they purify the air. It was explained to me that a special cleaning would be making sure all surfaces were specially cleaned. Deeper carpet vacuuming, new bedspreads, etc.

Nope, it's just a unit put in the room for 2 hours that purifies the air.

So many people and not everyone is on the same page. Everyone knows things differently there. That's what drives me crazy. You just have to find the person who knows how to help you the way you want to be helped.

Ok, moving on!
