Israel is 'heading toward annihilation'

It almost seems like those comments are purposely trying to get us to invade. I don't think it is a threat...I think it is a taunt.
I think so as well...and I think that maybe the Iranian leadership wants us to invade. There have been a number of articles that I have read about the younger generation of Iranians growing up with and embracing American TV programs and American cultural norms. That kind of infiltration scares the bejesus out of Iran's relgious leaders. Now what praytell could change the kids views to completely reject America, the image of Pam Anderson that they watch on TV, and everything that it stands for? Maybe a few bombs that accidentally hit Grandma's house down the street from strategic target? Yeah, that might do it...and sure, current leadership would be killed or displaced, but at least they keep Iran pure...and that's all they really care about anyway.

Too see what may be encouraging Iran's president, read the above link. Some believe he is trying to hurry up the arrival of the 12th Imam. He wants a war.

In a speech on November 16th, Ahmadinejad spoke of his belief in the return of the Twelfth Imam. One of the differences between Sunni and Shi’ite Islam is that the latter, who dominate Iran and form the majority in Iraq, believe that Allah shielded or hid Muhammad al-Mahdi as the Twelfth Imam until the end of time. Shi’ites expect the Twelfth Imam, which Jews and Christians would recognize as a messianic figure, to return to save the world when it had descended into chaos. Shi’ite orthodoxy has it that humans are powerless to encourage the Twelfth Imam to return. However, in Iran a group called the Hojjatieh believe that humans can stir up chaos to encourage him to return. Ayatollah Khomeini banned the group in the early 1980s because they rejected one of the primary commitments of the Iranian revolution: the concept of Vilayat-i Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist). In other words, they opposed the notion of an Islamic republic because it would hinder the Twelfth Imam’s return on account of it being too just and peaceful. Today, in addition to the possibility of Ahmadinejad himself being a member (or a former member), the group has connections to Qom ultraconservative cleric Mesbah Yazdi whom Iranians frequently refer to as the "crazed one" and the "crocodile." Four of the twenty-one new cabinet ministers are purportedly Hojjatieh members. Some reports state that cabinet ministers must sign a formal pledge of support for the Twelfth Imam.

Government and Religion...a bad mix no matter how you slice it!!

This totally underscores why it was essential to go into Iraq BEFORE they developed nuclear weapons. The sanctions were NOT going to last forever, particularly with France and Russia pushing to have them lifted and the corrupt oil for food program that would have allowed them to develop them eventually. There was NO WAY that Saddam would have tolerated Iran having a nuke anymore than Israel will. If the rest of the world has to act, we have a country on the Iranian border that provides access. Many of the Iranian people do not like their government anymore than we like them.

well said. and i think israel is more than capable of handling themselves here.

I remember during the 1st gulf war we told Israel to stand back. Somehow I think if these threats continue, Israel won't be standing back.
Israel wouldn't have to do a ground attack, would they? I think they have what it takes to take care of the situation completely. Wouldn't it be fought totally different than we are fighting in Iraq?
I think Israel is more apt to use what they have then we are.

We should be afraid. Dispite having technology dated 20 years old, this is technology that can still have a lethal impact even on our military. Fighting in a country like Iran would be extremely difficult due to the mountainous terrain, and the persistence of Iranians. It would not be like invading Iraq, where we went to Bagdad pretty much unhindered by Iraqi military.

Tehran is a lot more fundamentalist than Saddam's regime ever was... I would take this threat with some seriousness.

Well said.
What's making the situation even more difficult is that the majority of the population is behind him - This guy was voted into office!!! BTW, this also makes the situation similar to that in Germany in 1933.

I'm not sure what would make me feel safe, but I wish that Israel, the U.S. and China would take care of Iran, Syria, and North Korea. Especially North Korea. Those poor people - starving to death! So heartbreaking. :(

If you want someone to take care of North Korea, there's a simple way: Start spreading the rumour that there's a lot of oil buried under it - this may speed up things considerably ;)
