Globes Reports:

New Lineo Cinemas (2006) Ltd., owned by the Edery family and Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) investment arm Shamrock Holdings, will build a NIS 600 million 25-screen multiplex and Disney amusement park at the Check Post exit from the Carmel Tunnel in Haifa. New Lineo owns the Cinema City Ltd. multiplexes in Ramat Hasharon and Rishon LeZion.

The entertainment complex will be built on an 80-dunam (20-acre) site and will include 50,000 square meters of cinemas and shops and a 30,000-square meter Disney amusement park. The land is owned by a local family.

The new complex will be near the Cinemall, which has stores and a 23-screen Yes Planet multiplex.

Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav said, "This plan expresses confidence in our plans to turn Haifa Bay in a thriving business area. The plan began with the municipality's assistance in the building of Cinemall and the upgrade of the mall, previously known as the Lev Hamifratz Mall, and the building of the transport hub for the cable car, which carries passengers up to the Technion and Haifa University."
Note that 600 million NIS (New Israeli Shekels) is equal to about $170 Million

It says it won't be a Disney theme park.

DHS itself is something like 135 acres, and that's the smallest of the WDW theme parks. This would be less than a quarter of the size Canobie Lake Park in NH, and I consider that a pretty small park by today's standards. And that includes the cinemas and shops.

Sounds more like it will be kiddie mall rides...

Hmm...When is a Disney theme park not a Disney theme park?

Seriously, though, 20 acres is awfully small, even if that perhaps doesn't include the cinema. More pertinent to our discussions, I wonder if Disney has any involvement in project (park) development besides being the banker (I'm not familiar with the "Shamrock Holdings investment arm"). This appears merely a financial investment (or we would have heard more about it), but Disney has looked previously at the idea of U.S. regional "entertainment centers". Nothing came of it, and while we have utterly no reason to believe there is a connection, it is somewhat a coincidence.

Now, for years we've had threads of "My wife's friend's sisters' mailman's banker's cousin saw on the news that Disney was building a park in [insert name of your state here]. It's confirmed! I can't wait for it to open!"

Now we can add foreign countries.

Actually, it turns out Shamrock Holdings is an investment arm of the Disney family -- not the Disney company. There's a wiki page on it here.

Ah, that's what I remember that name from.

So both articles got it completely wrong, and it is actually a shareholder of WDC, and not WDC itself or a subsidiary, that is involved. No different really than if Bob Iger was paying for it out of his own wallet.

1) 30,000 sq milimeters = 7.4 acres.
2) How big an amusement park area can that be?
3) A Super-Walmart is about 2.75 acres.

If i remember correctly...

Shamrock holdings is the money company that was started by Roy E and Stanley Gold...and therefore the umph behind both the outser of Ron Miller and then Michael Eisner.

The most underated player in the last 30 years of disney was Roy Disney...which is amazing considering he was the only one with that name that worked and had significant stockholdings in disney...and he looked exactly like Walt Disney.

Guess the moniker is true: If you hide in plain view...nobody will ever find you.

But Roy died a year ago...and with him a big chunk of what disney was/ has been since the old guard left in the 70s and 80s.

long story short...this seems like a shopping mall that roy disney's family estate is putting money into...nothing more

I feel like disney wouldn't want to get involved in that area, especially for such a small plot of land to call it any sort of "theme(d)" park. I doubt they'd actually partner to make a lovely green grass sorta park. But the big thing to me is why disney would decide to partner over there considering the conflicts and all.

just some windbag talking big - and the newspaper didn't check with any reliable sources on the disney side...

Yeah. Sounds like a primary target for Hezbollah to me.

Yup. Roy of course was also responsible for bringing IN Eisner...

So for anyone still confused, DISNEY the corporation is not investing in this "park". It is an investment holding company owned by Roy's estate (now), and was for the Disney family, not the corporation. It happens to hold (or did) a significant fraction of Disney Corp. stock.

Does not compute. :confused3

But it doesn't matter since PP noted the Disney company isn't building anything.

People were still posting as if Disney Corp. is involved. I was clarifying that they are not.

I was not disagreeing with your post. I just was saying this topic really doesn't matter, wether you are all for Disney building a middle eastern park or making a antagonistic remark about that article, because it's not the Disney company's project anyway.
