Isn't $500.00 a night a little hefty for a standard room?

We are going to the grand california hotel and paying $500.00 a night for a standard room with a parking lot view. We booked about 8 months ago, I guess THAT was a mistake.
We are staying from March 11 - March 19.
They can't even garentee us a balcony room. I don't know how 'magical' this will feel when we are being SO ripped off.
What do you think?

I wouldn't pay $500/night for ANY hotel room anywhere in the world! Are you sure that's the room-only rate...no tickets?

yes I'm sure. I thought at the time of booking this was normal. So I phoned the grand and asked if we can have a really NICe room for that at least or even MAYBE a bed and a bunk bed. NOPE, two queen sized beds. (My travel agent got that bed preference wrong.)
Nope, nothing, everything is all booked up and no garentees for a belcony and we had a parking lot view booked.
So I take it, this is NOT normal?

You're going during a very busy spring break week. If you want to save money, check offsite hotels.

Too late now. I didn't really want to 'save' money I wanted to go big This time. We have always gone budget but we wanted to stay somewhere delux this time. I'm afraid we went delux price but not delux room. Other words - ripped off. It will be hard to have fun there, but we WILL try to forgot about it when we are there.

I am continually amazed at what people pay for DL hotels and WDW ones. When I see the "rack rates" I honestly think to myself "they must be getting a great deal -- why would anyone pay $300 or more for a place to sleep".

Sorry, I'm of no help. I'm still annoyed that the best deal I could find within walking distance of DL was $85 a night this summer.

Spring break is peak time so you'll pay top dollar.

You're still 8 days away, and I'm guessing DLand hotels have a 5-day cancel policy. I'm wondering, if you don't already have your Dland tickets, if you can call the Walt Disney Travel Company and turn your room-only reservation into a package and perhaps get more bang for the buck?

The GC is a beautiful hotel and SO convenient, but I agree, it's a big chunk of change to stay there. We paid about that much last July when we stayed at the DLR for our anniversary. We only stayed for one night, though.

I agree that you might want to consider one of the other DLR hotels (Paradise Pier or the Disneyland Hotel) if you don't feel comfortable paying this much. Or going off site like another poster mentioned. The off site hotels in the area aren't that far from the parks. It might be a bit inconvenient, but another option is to start off at an offsite hotel to save you some money, then switch to the GC for the final part of your stay just so you can experience staying in the resort.

LOL! Pull them out like we did and enjoy! I will confess that DH and I felt "special" when we stayed there, and I know you'll have a great time, too!

If it's a room-only reservation and not a package, why can't you make a change?

I phoned the hotel and they said they are all booked up so no UPGRADES, (I thought I could get conceige for that price but no). The agent said it's all bought and paid for and she can't make changes.

According to the Disneyland website, March is still value season, so even the MOST expensive standard room (theme park room) should cost no more than $360 per night plus tax! Is the $500 quote Canadian or U.S. dollars? If it's U.S. dollars, you'd better check the fine print of whatever travel documents you have from your travel agent!

I wasn't talking about upgrades, but about changing to a package that has theme park tickets and a few extras, for maybe a discounted room rate. Since you've already called the hotel once, I'd call again and ask how much more to add the package. Your travel agent doesn't sound particularly helpful!

What do I think? I think you probably should have asked some more questions before you paid!

Are you sure that $500 a night doesnt include other things such as your park tickets? Standard rack rate for the dates you are there, for a non view room are $280 a night. Add to that the $15 resort fee and 15% tax, and its about $340 a night. Theme park view with tax and fees would still be under $500 a night.

The "parking lot view" has to be the city/standard view at $280/night plus tax and resort fee, as hlbtimes2 said. There is either a BIG mistake somewhere, or you have a package that includes tickets. Please check everything you have from your travel agent.

Something does seem wrong here.

We just booked 6 nights at the DLH hotel in May with a pool/resort view through AAA. The DLH is a bit cheaper than the GC, but not that much cheaper. Our cost for the room AND the tickets was $1972 for 2 adults and one child. This comes out to $329 a day for the package, not just the
room.

Greater then $500 for a single room alone seems wacky. Did they book you the concierge level or something like that
by mistake?


BTW: For those who view a room as 'just a place to stay', it's overpriced. But for those of us who view the hotels as magical places, it seems like you never leave the park for six days, and that's what we're paying for. Not a place to sleep, but staying in the magical coccoon of Disney.

I agree with other posters here, I think there is a huge misunderstanding by OP. I have stayed at all 3 DL resort hotels (including concierge) and have never paid anywhere near $500 per night.
According to the PP with their research, I have to concur, something is missing or left out.

It sounds like your TA is actually ripping you off OR you have some of the facts wrong. There is no way the hotel would be $500 a night for a standard room. I would call DISNEY and see if you can cancel and ask how much you are paying per night and if it is $500 inquire as to why.

As I mentioned earlier, the OP could be quoting prices in Canadian dollars. However, I still think she has more than a room-only reservation...maybe insurance and/or transfers?
