Is Walmart food really that good.

I never had a problem with their meat. Their produce isn't very good. I do like their bakery. I actually got my wedding cake from there. It was gorgeous and tasty.

I think it depends on where you live and if the produce is in season or not, as well as how long it spends in distribution warehouses.

I live in California, and the produce here is generally pretty good as long as everything is in season - including at Wal-Marts that carry produce. I sometimes shop at a legendary (I don't use that term lightly) supermarket with an incredible produce selection. I'm talking strawberries from up to a dozen suppliers with specific prices for 12 oz baskets, 1 or 2 lb clamshells, pesticide free, organic, long stem, etc. A lot of times they have specials with specific suppliers when they've been around too long and the wholesaler dumps them cheap. Strawberries may be close to going bad and a few are moldy, but they often taste the best at this point.

Their meat is usually good here. However, I'm not usually impressed with the produce. It's not consistent except for the bananas, which are consistently too green. I prefer Kroger for produce.

It's pretty hit or miss just like any store.

I buy a large amount of my groceries there.

Some name brands because it's better

Some of their private label stuff (because it tastes better or the same as name brand

Some stuff I can go either way

Produce is probably 50/50 which is on par with some of my local stores and only a little worse than my Super Target.

My local Sprouts and Whole Foods are the best produce around.

Meat is again about 50/50 (though I buy most of my meat in Bulk from Sam's which is also owned by walmart and I vary rarely have problems with it).

Target is slightly better meat wise but I have gotten some real tough meat there as well, but a local meat market is top notch and I go by there and splurge sometimes.

However Deli meat I prefer Target or Sprouts/Whole Foods. There is only one brand of Walmart Deli Meat that I like and it's not always available and I won't eat the others. So I almost exclusively get that at Target their archer farms all natural is pretty good in the ham off the bone and their turkey breast.

However Walmart Brand has the best tasting milk (we drink fatfree), and we like their American cheese slices better than local or Kraft as well.

At my local Walmart the meat is horrible and the produce doesn't last near as long as my local grocery stores.

When I started seeing those commercials, I was shocked. I hate Walmart meat and produce!

Most of the beef here at Walmart is injected with solution to "enhance" the flavor. I find this gives the meat a peculiar texture and it just doesn't taste like steak. Every time I have looked at their produce it's past its prime or unacceptable in some way: Dried out, bruised, rotten. I never buy their produce, and the 2 times I've purchased anything from the deli, it was spoiled by the next day. I will buy their store brand of shredded cheese, most dairy (but not milk, I get a much better price at the IGA here in town), and non-food goods (health/beauty aids, paper goods, cat food, etc.).

My biggest issue with most of Walmart's grocery goods is the lack of variety. For such a big store, our Walmart has a really limited variety of foods. There are a TON of different foods, but maybe only two or three options regarding brand/style. Only diced peaches, not cling or slices, for example.

We have 2 Walmarts. Both have horrible meat and produce. We have a ton of local suppliers and groceries that carry much better products. I should not go to the store, pick up fruit, and have it be going bad the next day! That means the amount of time from when it was picked and when it was shelved was WAY too long.

Don't even get me started on the meat. Tough, horrible cuts, and flavorless. No butchers available.

I've had fairly good luck with most of the food at Walmart. In fact, better then the more expensive chain stores in the area. The meats are OK, sometimes good sometimes I'm not all that impressed. Nothing in the line of Meats and or Fish in our Walmart has anything freshly prepared on site. Produce also is iffy, sometimes great, sometimes not so good. I find that here in NC, produce is hard to buy that isn't already too ripe. I have to buy green Banana's and even then they are overripe within 3 days. The Walmart brand Items all seem to be pretty good quality. Peaches have been good, but again they are already ripe when you buy them so you don't have a very long shelf life. Overall, I think it is fine.

I get fruit flies EVERY time I buy produce from Wal-Mart. My DH works in the food industry and said Wal-Mart tells people what they are paying and they either have to get their prices that low (usually lowering quality to do so) or go out of business because they loose the contract.

Saw a documentary a few years ago, said the exact same thing. This really irritates me. Walmart shouldn't be allowed to have that much power.

From commercials telling me Walmart Peaches are better then peaches bought from a farmer at a fruit stand. To Gordon Ramsey telling me every week on Master Chef that Walmart Steaks are top notch. Are they for real!!! I'm just curious how good is the quality of the produce and meats from Walmart.

*shudders* I wouldn't touch meat or produce at Wal Mart with a 20 foot pole. Hate the place. I refuse to shop there but DH does because its closer. Drives me crazy. dde1c

P.S. Edited because Siri can spell for anything!!

Where, oh where, is the Tag Fairy when you need her? :woohoo:

I would not want to see a sheep's head at WalMart! :scared1:

Some stores are better than others. I like the produce, dairy and grocery items. Meat, not so much.

Wal-Mart food is NOT good. Don't waste your money. The only thing I would buy from there is the name-brand pre-packaged dry items like pasta.

I have given their produce many tries and it is so flavorless. And if it does have flavor, it's that of pesticides.

I remember one time, after I had decided to stop buying food there, I could smell the strawberries as I walked by the display. I thought to myself, "Well they must be good to eat if they smell so delicious!". I was wrong....they were awful.

I try not to shop at Wal-Mart period. But I will NEVER buy their produce or meat, or bakery items for that matter.

I prefer Fresh Market, Publix, and local farmer's markets.

One more reason why I avoid Walmart's outer sections. I'll pick up a gallon of milk or some packaged stuff when I need to, but I don't think I've ever purchased meat there. Target always looks cleaner and fresher than Walmart, but their prices can be higher. My favorite grocery store is Central Market, Publix when I'm in Florida, and I stick to the farmer's market in California. I still wind up purchasing from Tom Thumb/Safeway because of convenience and location.

Meat it depends on what it is.....bacon name brand the same everywhere same with sausage, hot dogs and lunchmeats. I'll buy those at Walmart but hamburger, steaks, roasts NO WAY.

Produce the bananas yeah an here they no greener than the grocery store sometimes riper. Usually the other produce is OK too.

Most of the time I can get meat an produce cheaper on sale at other stores. Walmart handy for matching sale ad prices an for the stuff that is needed but not on sale.

I'd probably save a lot of money if I did grocery shopping at Walmart. I buy much less when I feel nauseated.

Those "You're eating WALMART steaks!!" and "You're wearing WALMART clothes!!" commercials bug the heck outta me. The people act so shocked, like shopping at Walmart is the equivalent of dumpster diving or something.

Well, to be fair though, whether right or not, a lot of people DO look at Wal Mart that way.

LOL.

It's a commercial and Gordon Ramsey is a paid sponser. Not a far stretch there.
I live in NJ which has many wonderful farmers markets with real live farmers selling their produce so it would be hard for me to believe any thing at walmart was comparable but that would go for my local supermarket.

I don't buy meats from walmart. I don't like how they package them for some reason. weird I know
