Is Wallpaper Out???

I have an opinionated and vocal neighbor here and she said to me that if you want to sell a home -- remove the wallpaper......"wallpaper and borders are out!!"

I have some wallpaper in my house, just a few rooms, and I never heard about this new trend. Is this true?

I personally hate wallpaper. The house would have to be a steal for me to buy it with borders and wallpaper since it is so time consuming to remove. Buts that my opinion only.... Good Luck

Well, on Sell This House they almost always remove wallpaper. It is a dated look nowadays. The style now is to use colored paint. I would think that most buyers can look past things like wallpapers, but realize your house won't be considered move-in ready.

I think that borders are out, but I doubt it would hurt selling your house. Lots of people like them.

ETA: I don't think there are too many people who wouldn't buy a house due to wallpaper.

I'm not a wallpaper fan. I definitely think it makes a house look dated.

Using a rag roller, etc. is very popular now. I personally would stay away from wallpapering when redecorating.

I don't think wallpaper is "in" right now but I sure wouldn't take the time to remove it to try to sell my house. I don't think a couple of rooms of wallpaper is going to make or break the sell of house with all of the other factors that go into chosing a house.

I think it's "out". With all the different paint techniques they have now, it's so much easier and better to paint. Wallpaper is also a PITA to take down. I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to add wallpaper, but I don't necessarily think you need to remove it before selling your house. Unless perhaps it's an obnoxious pattern.

I'd personally spend a weekend and take it down. Put up a fresh coat of paint. The place will look cleaner.
We did buy our place with a border up but the room was decorated in a nursery pattern that we loved. Since we were planning on starting a family it didn't deter us. The woman was really nice and left the matching curtains and lamp.

I think wallpaper is out for a lot of people. Although there are so many nice designs, not everyone likes wallpaper. When we first moved into our house 8 yrs ago, I put wallpaper in all of the bathrooms, dining room and kitchen. Several years ago we were thinking of selling our house. Our agent told us to take down as much wallpaper as possible and paint the walls a neutral color. We ended up not selling the house, but we did take down most of the wallpaper. I painted those walls with textured sandstone paint from Home Depot. I used a darker color textured paint in the bathrooms. I like the walls much better now and it should make the house look better when we decide to sell it. Also, the textured paint helps hide the imperfections in the wall. I rolled on the first coat and sponged on the second coat. The walls look great.

I'm with your neighbor. And actually, we are so anti-wallpaper that we refused to buy a home with it. We may be the extreme, but the housing market wasn't hard to buy into in our area and we could afford to be picky about things. Wallpaper is a PITA to remove and we did NOT want to spend our first month in the house removing it.

Every design show that caters to selling homes removes or covers wallpaper immediately to attract more buyers. *I* think it'd be worth your time but your realtor would be the best person to know in your area if it's worth it.

One of our neighbors got their house a little cheaper because every single room had outdated country wallpaper. Every room also had a matching border. The couple selling was older and thought everyone was just going to love their house. The wife especially had a rude awakening. It took quite some time to sell it. The house was built in 1987 and nothing had been changed since. Blue duck wallpaper. The horror.....

If your house isn't selling, or you are in competition with a nearby house that's been updated, then I would remove it & go with nuetral walls.

Wall paper dates a house more than a wall color. Wall paper or border can be just a few years old, but its enough to date a room. When we moved here 13 yrs ago, I vowed no more wallpaper. Instead I did just a few borders over the years. Well, they are now all coming down because they look dated to me.

Just 1 more to go.

Just about 3 yrs ago, DH & I were in a bidding war with another couple over a house. When we let them have the house, I was actually relieved. EVERY room had wallpaper & borders that would have needed to come down. All pretty & expensive I'm sure, but NOT our taste or style or colors.

As they say on Sell This House, you need to make your home attractive to as many potential buyers as possible...not to yourself.

There is good wallpaper and then there is bad wallpaper. Sadly, most people have bad wallpaper in their houses.

We didn't buy a house because of all the wallpaper too. There was ivy wallpaper all up the stairs and stair well and kitchen. As well as wallpaper with a pink tint in the living room. Not my taste.

I do have borders in a couple of rooms in my house now because I like them but I have no wallpaper at all. I will never hang wallpaper again.

Yes, wallpaper is "out". It has been since, 2000 but now it is really, really "out".

It is so "out" the house we bought here in TX, has these special textured walls. Forget what it is called.

We recently purchased a home and if the house had wallpaper we pretty much didn't even want to see the house. Had we saw a house on the outside that we had huge interest in that had wallpaper, in the offer we would have made them remove the wallpaper the paint with white paint or give an allowance to remove it. We didn't want the hassle of removing wallpaper.

A border or two, we would've just removed it our self, but wallpaper = removal nightmare.
